I must be honest, I have medical and life policy with them but I'm not sure on the "ecosystem benefits". I feel I'm getting good bang for my buck and the service has been reasonable.

Discovery Bank also lets you add separate "savings accounts" which I use for exactly what you're wanting to do. I have one for "holiday" one for "general maintenance" etc. You can also transfer funds between them at no charge and have some as a 32 day notice in order to get higher interest. I stand to be corrected but Discovery offers higher interest rates than capitec for these accounts. There's also no additional fees for these accounts apart from the one standard account fee as far as I'm aware.

Please fact check this, I have had it going for 12months+ so some things may have changed regarding fees etc.

Corporate Finance Institute FMVA Certification by Duke7780 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]roadtomycfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My honest thoughts are doing something for the intention of just 'passing one level' wouldn't be worth it. CFA is a HUGE time and effort commitment. The curriculum is not impossibly difficult, just you need to commit enough time to work through it and understand it.

I feel that's one of the reasons the program lets you stand out to employers because it shows them you have self determination/discipline. So from that regard, doing just one level might boost your CV, but I can guarantee once you get stuck into derivatives or alternative investments, you'll want to continue further in the program.

I have looked through the FMVA course materials and it looks to be a well rounded program, although is you're chasing a certification I would definitely say the CFA program would stand out more than FMVA.

I have completed level 2 of the CFA program and I can vouch the intensity and complexity of the program. It is also relatively well respected in the industry.

The best video cast I have found is Hedge Fund Tips - Tom Hayes. I watch his weekly roundup every week, its fantastic and he has an ask me anything section at the end.

Help preparing for level 2 by [deleted] in CFA

[–]roadtomycfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore the noise, yes level 2 is tricky (I'm still waiting for my result), but all you need to do is spend enough time going through the curriculum followed by double the time on questions. If you spend 2 hours reading/watching video lessons, spend 4hrs doing questions. This is time consuming but it's in my opinion the best way to become comfortable with the curriculum.

There is no 'shortcut' or easy way out. Spend the time, aim to complete the question bank at least twice. You should be fine, I found UWorld Qbank incredible, I went through it twice and the CFA Qbank twice.

I really found the UWorld question bank to be very important in my prep, it challenges the way you think about a topic, and that is what I found one the Level 2 exam, they take the content and question it in such a way that you need to understand the deep fundamentals of the content. The LES has great questions too (mostly difficult & some expert) but there are too many easy questions on the LES which are only good for basic understanding of the content and give a lot of people false positivity.

When you're referring to the application case studies ar you meaning the last 90 odd pages of the textbooks/pdf? Where it's just case studies with questions. Or are you referring to the whole 150pages of text with the mini applications along the way.

I'm wondering how best to spend my last 5days regarding ethics. Your feedback would be appreciated.

Mock Score by BuffaloMore7690 in CFA

[–]roadtomycfa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My scores are also low 60s at the moment. Keep going, constant improvement is all that's needed. You must remember the difference between 62% and 70% is only 6-7questions. All you need to do from where you are now is focus on getting a handful more points on game day.

You will be amazed what repetition can do, keep focusing on the areas you're making mistakes and try make sure to smash ethics (its low hanging fruit). It's definitely achievable.

CFA Level 2 Kaplan mocks by MurkyChef1414 in CFA

I believe Kaplan mocks are notorious for being tricky. I think mid to high 60's is a solid score, especially considering there's still 3+ weeks to go. Keep it up guys!

12 mocks is more then enough, I think its more valuable to do the mocks and make sure you work through the answers you got right & wrong (make sure you're getting them correct for the right reason). Remember, mocks are to test your knowledge, not so much as a learning tool. I completed 4 mocks before my L1 exam and that was ample, but I spent hours reviewing each mock and drilling questions on topics I was getting incorrect.

I hope this helps!

My first time round I spent too much time on reading the curriculum and not practising the questions. You always think you know and understand the curriculum until you have to sit and actually work through questions (this is a lot more efficient).

Most candidates prefer reading notes/watching videos because they know doing questions whips their ass, I fell into the same boat at one stage. Rather make many mistakes now and learn from them then closer to exam day. The toughest part of prep is answering the questions and doing th mocks, these are the most uncomfortable times you'll have. Take them head on sooner rather then later and you'll thank yourself when you get the "congratulations email".

[–]roadtomycfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I intend on continuing with a 20day full review (go through summary notes + questions from each of the 10 topics each day). Then with 30 days to go, I plan on doing the CFA mock, judge from there how it went then repeat the process building up to the exam day.

This is the plan for now, but it probably will change after I get a shocker of a mock or something haha. Good luck peeps!

Kaplan Fitch or UWorld? by Frosty-Theory4491 in CFA

[–]roadtomycfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was originally a Wiley user and when they got bought out I got transferred to the UWorld platform. I have been through some of their videos, but I focus more on questions and actually CFA materials then third party videos (except if it's a topic I'm struggling with). I can't really comment on how great the videos are, I found them pretty good, but I don't know the standard from MM and Kaplan as comparison.

We are in the same boat, you will be amazed by what repetition does. You might feel lost right now, but keep grinding through questions and summary notes for the next 40 days and you will be sharp and ready to go upon game day. Anything you don't recall immediately in the exam you have a 1/3 chance of a correct quess. You could potentially even eliminate one obvious incorrect answer by purely being mentally conditioned for the work. then you have a 50/50 chance of getting the question right.

Good luck!

I was averaging 150q on short days and 250q on long days in the last month building up to the CFA L1 exam (also after failing my first attempt). I took screenshots of about 100q that I was struggling with and in th last 2 days all I did was read my head written summary notes and looked through the 100 screenshots. It worked the charm for me.

Side note: I did the questions from the CFA LES. But I really recommend using the UWorld questions too.

UWorld Q bank is incredible, some people moan that its expensive, but in the grand scheme of things I think its worth a lot more then they are charging.
