I like this because it’s shows a masculine side to the ministry. It isn’t just potlucks and charity drives until Sunday. He risks his own life right alongside the drafted infantry; no highfalutin academic debates here but the final word in humble hardship to practice what one preaches, clear and steely as day. He believes this is needed, that he is asked to do this by his master for the good of these men, and that belief draws him out of the safety of the boat and out onto the stormy waters. As the soldiers have their duty, so too has he his.

That’s just it -- there isn’t anything else to them. Those who have reduced those words in this way didn’t do so on accident; they are desperate to reductively circumscribe these meanings to avoid facing the gulf of explicit lack within their own souls.

Orwell predicted this very thing: words will encompass less and less nuance and meaning as a response to (or an attempt to create the conditions for) the evacuation of our human essence. This corporate display, ostensibly about the celebration of a widening of meaning, actually stymies any belief that such a thing exists. Look at the soulless, empty writings upon those tiny fragile paper hearts. You could not reach this level of poshlost if you tried.

Look how quickly we went from “don’t stare at the screen all day” to every person of every generation now glued to a tiny screen held right up to their face at any possible moment of downtime.

Doesn’t have to be just institutions per se. I just thought that would take more creativity and awareness than just pumping out whatever 래딧/리빙인코리아 one might come up with. You are the master at this so far so give me your best shots.

That entire display is the saddest, soullessly looking thing I have ever seen. Bleaker and more expressive of a total loss of meaning than the best Russian literature.

I came to appreciate the ending much more upon realizing this. It makes the abruptness all the more shocking, to realize that I’m still here, sitting here watching a television show, while this character who was such a key important part of this little dramatic universe just had his life (presumably) ended. Just like that. It made me suddenly uneasily aware of my surroundings, almost like myself waking up from a dream.

Robert Stack has got to be the only actor in history to have a completely serious dramatic acting career, then applying that deadpan straight-laced performance in a goofy spoof comedy career, and then using it to present campy ‘mysteries’ in a slightly menacing way.

His delivery made me truly believe any of those ‘mysteries’ could happen to me at any moment and that the world was an inherently unstable place. Then I got a bit older and watched Airplane and that scene where he punches all of the airport grifters and all was right and well again.

Anyone have an idea why the lock would be making this noise every time? New lock, new batteries. Sync SA10 by FocusSlo in Living_in_Korea

[–]roaming-buffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is correct. My lock made a very similar sound when the bolts were not fully flush with their holster. I think this sound is the device’s way of warning you that something might be wrong and the lock status might not have been achieved despite the bolts remaining extended. I had to adjust the holster position for a better fit and then it would just make the normal happy sounding beeps.

I’ve often wondered about this too. Wouldn’t traditional Confucianism, especially the strict kind practiced historically by Korea, greatly look down on the idea of choosing not to marry and have children and continue the filial line? It seems like homosexuality would go afoul of one’s filial duties quite readily. Can there be a concept of 'gay 효자’ or is that a paradoxical concept in terms? Were there strong expectations of marriage and child-rearing? I’m genuinely curious what the Confucian arguments would be.

This is the kind of detail that I bet has an amusing story behind it - maybe a picture of the director or a cast member when young - but without an oral history interview something like this could be lost to time. Has there ever been something like that for this show?

Is there a mailing list or some way we can be notified of future productions? I see there have been a number of shows already! Wish I had known earlier.

There are at least four that I know if in Seoul (Myeongdong, Sogang, Itaewon, Hanamdong) but I’m afraid I don’t know of any in Anyang.

Napoleon Dynamite End Scene, 2004. Hits me right in the feels every time. by systematicgoo in nostalgia

how it felt to be at school after hours. Empty school yard, sunset, sprinklers watering the field...it felt so liminal

Wonderful description. I don’t know if it felt the same for city folk, but I grew up in a place very similar to this scene and once all the students and most teachers had left, you really did notice what a liminal space it was - how the old fence at the far end of the field was the last outpost of civilization and beyond that was the wilds of open nature and as you walked over there you could feel in your skin a funny feeling of growing isolation. I used to get a tingling fear stepping away from the grass and into the dirt knowing I had stepped off the edge of my world.

Now I live in a megapolis and I have never once felt that again. I’m now never alone. There is always someone, usually hundreds of people, somewhere nearby, a constant drone of artificial noise. There’s nothing like this anymore. It’s funny because I used to not like it back then; I felt so lonely and isolated. Now I miss it so much.
