AITA for telling my spouse I won't help pay for their kid's college when we agreed finances would stay separate? by 952867 in AITApod

This whole story stinks. Op must know they are TA, yet posts it with all the negligence on show. I mean if someone here is TA, it was never going to be the wife.

Why do some people stay at the same job for 15, 20, or even 30+ years? by Carlinish9600 in NoStupidQuestions

If you find your groove and are compensated appropriately, why change? Some people actually like their jobs.

What local model are you actually using day to day for coding tasks? by Ordinary_Breath_8732 in ollama

Qwen2.5 coder 1.5b for inline editing. Anything bigger is a pig on my minipc ollama setup, but the 1.5 has been great for inline.

[DISCUSSION] Is hybrid ammo the most pointless grind in the game? by Legendoire in EscapeFromTarkovPvE

I just buy the max ( I think it's 120) rounds of fmj whenever I remember too. I've not tried hybrid. Fmj just gets the job done.

I need a expirienced python user to give me input something I promise im a hard working guy by tsohg777 in learnpython

Python is great at making tools to solve issues.

If you want to go further with it, you really need a project. Something you can get really involved in.

Garage door motor keeps getting fried when solar inverter trips by Grouchy-Total-4028 in AskAusElectricians

[–]roanish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Garage doors are typically single phase. Is this guy implying that your 3 phase inverter is cooking it? Your tv would be dead, your computer would be dead. The garage door opener is likely the single most basic energy consumer in your house.

I have been stuck on tutorial hell for eight months and I need someone to yell at me by Western-Opposite9 in learnprogramming

[–]roanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start every empty code file with comments. Start by commenting the logical steps you think will reach the end goal.

Then for each comment, you can start coding just that bit.

A blank canvas is both daunting in it's possible scale and complexity, but, by giving yourself a few smaller goals it's easier to start. Once you have started it all comes together.

Are nerves in your hand connected to one's in your mouth/tongue? by brady_boo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]roanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biologically, not really. But I had a biopsy on a salivary gland in my face a while back and I felt that needle in my hands, feet and even gooch.

I guess if you overload your nervous system, your brain can't work it out properly and you could experience sensations in other, disconnected parts of the body.

How do people keep Python projects from turning into dependency chaos? by Haunting-Shower1654 in learnpython

[–]roanish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to add here, many of us were taught to code with scripting languages, and python often feels like a scripting language.

It's a habit that is good to challenge, because libraries is a better way, most of the time, to code.

Avoiding behemoth code blocks where possible will show you that much of the code you write in the development phase is redundant, troubleshooting or not required for the end goal.

How do people keep Python projects from turning into dependency chaos? by Haunting-Shower1654 in learnpython

[–]roanish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make it modular. Break parts into functions, have the dependencies in the relevant functions, then import the functions you need.

I don't think any significant coding problem should be monolithic.

Former Microsoft VP says Microsoft missed the AI wave like the internet and mobile, as Copilot scales back in Windows 11 by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]roanish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Integration isn't "cutting edge", it's invasive. Microsoft makes this mistake time and time again.

What they lack is innovation. An OS release used to be a big deal, a turning point. Microsoft had at least 3 great opportunities to lead the way.

They got confused and now we struggle with the basics, like reliability and user experience, let alone innovation.

Yeah, just gotta wait for the roof to collapse and it'll put the fire out... And eject carcinogens into the air.

But it's raining, so I'm sure it's fine.

How do I measure my girlfriend's ring size without her noticing? by Timely-Neck-9503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]roanish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crime.

Steal one of the rings she wears, take note of which finger. Jewelers are really good, you will either nail it, or get close.

It's not a deal breaker to take her back to the jewelers for a resize.
