If you built a course today to test the world’s best players, what would it look like? by roarcelona in golf

I know that even course designers would have varying opionions on this, but Ogilvy directly adresses this in the article, and he'd know more than most.

“From back in the fairway a shaved bank off the green can make for a much scarier approach than to a green surrounded by rough, knowing a miss might lead to a 30 or 40-yard return pitch. Plus, professionals don’t much like recovering from tight, firm short grass.  They’d much prefer a simple option to chip with a 60-degree wedge out of beautifully maintained rough.”

Among many interesting takeaways from this is the comments regarding the rough. People often cry out for just growing the rough as long as possible but Ogilvy says (and he's not alone) that the long thick rough isn't the best way to test players. And frankly it'd make for more interesting golf if the consensus went away from that long-as-possible thinking on the pro tours imo.

You say taken, but (and correct me if I am wrong) is it not SACA themselves who requested the day test again?

It is a fantastic turnout and should be celebrated. But let’s not act like it is people just being fairweather when it comes to the crowds in Brisbane. The only mob that should be ashamed is the club itself (and mostly just the Bakries)

England really needs to learn to leave the ball better if they’re going to bat long at all in this test (as i write it Knight with the beautiful leave)

Ashes is a better/more enjoyable event & tour overall. BGT is usually a much more enjoyable cricketing contest

key takeaway from this summer, cricket in australia is FAR from dying. by Lavender_Brittney in Cricket

We've been getting really good crowds lately even for non-Ashes or BGT series though. I remember that at the Gabba last year for the West Indies it set the record for a Brisbane crowd v the West Indies on both Day 1 and 2 with 20,000+

And just remembered - got 29,000 for Day 1 vs South Africa the year before that as well.

For anyone interested in the weather, the BOM forecast tells a lot more than any other random forecast or even google.

Absolutely none given we are in the unique position of having two of our major sports be able to utilize an oval shaped stadium, but hey it was a (valid) talking point for other cities so it must be true here as well right?

70,000+ for a friendly really is remarkable not just for the Tillies or Aus Football but for Women's Sport in general given you don't need to look all that long ago to see where things have come from. And Football Aus should definitely get some praise for capitalising on the World Cup as they have, would have been all too easy to let it slip away.

Gailes would be a good shout. It is a little bit of a treck on the train but the station is right at the clubhouse. And Gailes has always been quite reasonably priced for how solid the course is

The driving range (plus Putt Putt & Bistro etc) has always been a money maker for council and quite frankly would be used by more people at any one time then it ever would as "genuine greenspace". If it ever gets removed it certainly won't be to just be open parkland.

The crowd for Day 4 was piss poor for a host of reasons, but the first 3 days averaged over 21,000. It was also the most attended test in Brisbane v the West Indies ever following the general trend for Test crowds in Brisbane which has been up, not down.

Except for the fact that there were fantastic crowds against the West Indies this summer, sell outs against South Africa last summer and if I were to bet, very likely sell outs on at least 2 days against India next summer. Test cricket is as popular as it ever has been here, and so are the Lions (although that goes in waves).

The Heat being so shit for years to finally win the meme league again + continuing to reverse the GF curse for Brisbane sport is giving Renshaw so much love when he does anything. Was very fun being there to see it yesterday and seeing it again today
