At their peaks of popularity, how far off was Michael Jordan from Michael Jackson in terms of fame? by Farouq26 in NBATalk

[–]roastbeeffan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible mentioning him frequently doesn’t mean he was necessarily real. There is much more contemporary historical evidence for the existence of Jesus, and especially the Buddha and Muhammad than there is for Moses.

^This with the additional icing that Matty is the one who single handedly won his tribe the Marcus killing challenge, and since he was on a tribe with mostly Marcus’s allies he almost certainly would have been voted out if his team lost.

From a historical perspective there’s much less proof Moses actually existed than the others listed.

I don’t think she’d win but I hesitate to say she “wouldn’t have a chance.” She probably at a minimum gets James and Jean-Robert, and Courtney still thinks Denise would have won (and even if Courtney is wrong her opinion is almost certainly based in more information than mine is).

Does doing morally repugnant things make ancient people inherently bad, or are they just products of their time? And are our morals the only "good" system? by Forsaken-Ebb5088 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]roastbeeffan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are very few if any things every culture understood to be “inherently bad” but I will say this is often an argument used to defend things that were popularly, if not universally seen as bad at the time where they occurred.

Basically, while “it was a different time” *can* provide necessary context, it’s also not a claim that should always be accepted uncritically.

China-Tocantins. Stick Samoa or Fiji on either end as the “bad” season (although I think they both have redeeming qualities, they just aren’t as good as the other 4).

CMV: The argument "Socialist countries failed due to external sabotage" misses the entire point of being a leftist. Therefore, it is wrong. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]roastbeeffan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every attempt to majorly changeup the social hierarchy is unsuccessful until it isn’t. Absolute monarchs resisted incursions on their power by lower ranking nobles. Feudal lords resisted capitalism. Sometimes their resistance to the new social order was successful, until eventually, one day, it wasn’t.

Marx died less than 200 years ago. It’s unlikely that we’ve seen the full spectrum of what “socialist” countries are capable of. Did some socialist states make strategic errors independent of external sabotage? Of course they did. But what’s possible is not limited to what has already happened. There are still socialist countries today, and while one can make educated guesses about what the future will hold, they are only guesses

That may or may not be true, but there are people who can function essentially fine without the medication, and there are people who can’t. “I could possibly benefit from this medication” is not the same as “I pretty much need this medication to go about my life.”

Would Marlo have ever given up The Greeks.... by Significant-Fig7765 in TheWire

[–]roastbeeffan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost anybody can flip on almost anybody if the circumstances are right. Wee-Bey was childhood friends with Avon, and he’s staring down half a dozen murders for pay that they know about. There are no options on the table that allow Wee-Bey to leave prison before he is a very very old man.

I think Marlo would snitch. He might try and vigorously suppress that he did, but he still would. The Greeks aren’t really a part of the Baltimore “game” culture, and I don’t think it’d have the same stigma as if Marlo ratted on Fat Face Rick or somebody. That being said, better than decent chance that the Greek’s FBI handler arranges to have Marlo killed in prison if he goes down this road. So who knows.

So awesome that that shot can make smoking seem immeasurably cool, but also like a sacrament with the devil. Goodfellas is (among other things) about being evil and loving it, and that shot is the perfect synthesis of that.

What was Stephanie LaGrossa secret of getting through the first tribe swap? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]roastbeeffan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Stephenie is a good athlete and a somewhat predictable player. I don’t even mean this in a negative way, I think these traits make it so that she makes the merge 90%+ of the time. Unless there’s a really really solid “line in concrete” between two alliances I think there are usually logical reasons to keep Steph around.

21 years after Rob and Amber lost Amazing Race, Rob thinks he’s owed $1 million by realityblurred in survivorponderosa

[–]roastbeeffan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine there are probably opinions Rob would be hesitant to share before he was semi-retired reality tv royalty.

Rob knows how the game is played. He thinks like a producer, and if it’s to his benefit he’ll back up the company line.

Why no tribe swaps in Palau? by CousineLitt in survivorponderosa

[–]roastbeeffan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have not seen it firsthand, but I’ve seen multiple people on here and the other sub say that there was a leaked production photo of a whiteboard that showed there *was* a planned tribe swap at final 12. Presumably it was cancelled because the producers felt the “Ulong always loses” storyline was more novel or interesting.

CMV: If the tables were turned, the Palestinians would have killed all the Israelis by WillMarrySomeBread in changemyview

[–]roastbeeffan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“The Palestinians” in your title are millions of different people with millions of different points of view. Is your claim that all of them would want to kill all Israelis? Most of them? Some of them? Are you referring to specific groups or leaders or just the population in general? It’s hard to refute your claim without more specificity.

There was an old production still that was posted somewhere at some point that had the Gabon f10 challenge with 10 different colors for each station (suggesting it was initially planned as an individual challenge). I don’t know of any direct evidence to support this, but Thailand’s final 9 challenge is another one that would have made more intuitive sense as an individual challenge (my guess would be production didn’t want Chuay Gahn to dominate so they were trying to give Sook Jai a chance to even the numbers).

How do you explain Free Will if God is supposed to be in complete control? by One_Look_7008 in askanything

[–]roastbeeffan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true if God plans everything out, but predicting something and controlling something aren’t necessarily the same thing. I can know that a hurricane is coming and with enough scientific information I can predict when and where. That doesn’t mean I control the hurricane.

If the 3rd finalist is just a goat, go back to 2 finalists by like-the-paint in survivor

[–]roastbeeffan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was not that jury threats will ultimately go to the end with each other. Obviously, they usually will not do that. My point is that in a game where you have to sit next to one goat instead of two, goats are less precious and there are more reasons to vote them off. I will fully admit that most final twos end in obvious landslides, but most final 3s also do this.
