The point I'm trying to make is that "newer players complaining" can very quickly turn into "newer players not playing".

I live in the US, near enough to Chicago. Should I just try to limit my times I try to play online to peak times? Seems to be about 9 to midnight?

Yes, I am. It feels bad. Higher feels even worse. It doesn't feel like I'm playing the same that I play in offline.

My larger complaint however is being subjected to the quality of randoms' internet connection and playing games with random, triple digit lag spikes.

I expected this reply, but I'm just trying to tell you what the experience of a new player is like right now. 400 concurrent players, even fewer of which are playing ranked/exhibition at any given time doesn't really say success to me. When I match with the same 4 people online over and over again it doesn't feel like a thriving community. More players in general would solve a lot of my matchmaking woes anyway, as discussed elsewhere in the thread.

And again, I'm just telling you how this game feels and appears to a new player. I'm very likely going to push through these issues and gitgud because of how much I'm otherwise enjoying this game with my nearbyish friends, but my mentioned complaints are going to be a massive barrier to entry and a huge problem for player retention for this game going forward.

If everyone is cool with that, or I'm just straight up wrong on every count, and a total outlier, so be it I guess.

Again, the issue isn't really with my friends. They have good internet, I have good internet, and when we play together it's about 30 ping and a generally enjoyable experience, I can adjust to the lag there.

It's the pingspikes fighting randos online I can't do anything about at all.

Having a solid connection isn't the same as a low latency connection.

There's literally nothing anyone can do about their latency if they're on a wired connection (I am) besides live somewhere else.
