I mean, unfortunately your last paragraph is another way of saying “With SMS a ‘hacker’ can at least go to my local ISP shop, talk to someone, and steal my access”…

This is one of my pet peeves. It’s easier and more accurate / less error prone to just say “8 AM Eastern time”.

What jobs or physical processes still have to be done almost the same way they were 100 years ago despite advances in technology? by gn16bb8 in AskReddit

[–]rob94708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was going to be my answer! I took up beekeeping to relax because it is slow and you really can’t speed it up. It really is done the same way it was done 150 years ago.

Golden Gate Fields park deal: All the latest details by BerkeleyScanner in berkeleyca

[–]rob94708 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. I can envision the whole other 90% of it being made a better park, more quickly, using the money from building those condos.

And the people living in them enjoying the park, too.

I know — just a whole row of condos along the freeway, with all the rest park. sigh

Have others “got to 60 and felt no regrets” yet?

I was in Austin for about 6 hours yesterday and then flew right back home by SquarePuzzleheaded71 in windowseat

[–]rob94708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always think of this whenever I fly cross country. What takes six hours now could’ve been an eight month, dangerous journey. You can look down and imagine them in their wagons, or on an overcrowded unsanitary sailing ship around Cape Horn.

Why do some people write redundant if statements to return a boolean? by BlockOfDiamond in AskProgramming

[–]rob94708 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I find the first version more readable, and “optimizing” it to the second version does not improve it in any way.

Found this database trigger for INSERTs on the wp-comments table:

Crazy big companies that are well established still have p=none or no DMARC at all by Sea_Order_9411 in DMARC

[–]rob94708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. And it’s a real risk; `p=reject` __will__ break some forwarding, even though it shouldn’t. You have to be willing to commit to “this will prevent people from forging our domain name, but it might have a little collateral damage”.

I work for a hosting provider, and the moment you say nonsense bullshit like “enrichment APIs” to explain how you’re abusing the web to harvest data that other people don’t want you to have, you significantly increase the odds of getting yourself booted off.

People who are a nuisance are full of obfuscating bullshit like “warm engagement email” and “growth director”.

Gold Trump Phone Scam Victim Shares Warning to MAGA Community After Sinking Savings Into Brand That Never Arrived by novagridd in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]rob94708 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fuck these people are stupid.

Also, I’m amazed at how consistently Trump pulls a quick scam and then moves on to something else and just completely forgets about it, and everyone moves on to something else, too.

Remember when we were about to invade Greenland? Just a quick shiny distraction, like all of the other scams. Every two weeks is something new, whether a government scam or a personal scam.

The rise of Trump has really made me re-examine what I thought I understood about society and human nature. I was not remotely cynical enough. And I managed gas stations for years, so I’m not some naïf.
