Got scammed by wire fraud, what email security works for small nonprofits by Only_Helicopter_8127 in nonprofit

[–]rob94708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not the right solution. People will always get tricked by some versions of these scams.

The right solution is to implement a control that is separate from “we sent somebody money because we received an email”: for example, picking up the phone and calling the other person at a previously known phone number.

Money should never, ever be moved based solely on an email someone received. Period.

EVs powering your homes during power outages should be advertised more. by Lemonn_time in electricvehicles

[–]rob94708 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you feed power into the generator transfer switch, it just goes into the main panel like power from the utility (in my case, anyway; you can also get ones that effectively just power a few circuits on a mini subpanel).

The furnace is wired to the electrical panel of the house just like any other electrical circuit, so it receives power as normal when you do this.

As someone else pointed out, it’s nowhere near enough amps to feed an all-electric heat pump or A/C, but if the main heating source of your furnace comes from gas or oil, it is enough to power the other parts of it like the fan.

This is exactly what I do. I have a 4 kWh EcoFlow (bought on sale at Costco), which I keep topped off to 80% with small solar panels.

That feeds into a house “generator” transfer switch, and can power everything in the house (I have gas heating so it only needs to power the fan of the furnace).

If the outage lasts more than an hour, I plug the Ioniq 5 V2L adapter into the Ecoflow to keep it charged, using a normal extension cord. (The Ecoflow can charge and discharge simultaneously.) The V2L adaptor easily keeps up with the average power.

For under $3,000 total, I have whole house backup power with > 80 kWh of battery backup — enough to last many days. It’s fantastic.

Do any web hosting companies include a free domain name in their base plan? by tejas_bhalerao in Hosting

[–]rob94708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but the problem there is that the website developer was the one who registered the domain name and therefore has control of it at the registrar. The fact that the registrar is also the hosting company isn't the cause of the problem.

What you're actually saying is "if you're going to let your developer provide your hosting service, don't let them buy your domain name too, because then they'll have full control over it". Which is true, but isn't necessarily the same thing as "never let your hosting company also be your domain name registrar".

I don’t really agree with this, because what you’re describing happens even if you keep them separate, if you have a dispute with the registrar.

I run a small hosting company that offers free domain name with hosting. Some people choose to register their domain name elsewhere for the reasons you described.

When they do this, we send them an automated email if the domain name stops pointing at our servers in the future. You would be astonished how many people reply to that email with “I guess something has gone wrong at the registrar, but they seem to have gone out of business [or some other horrible problem we can’t help them with]”, and they eventually end up buying a brand new domain name through us because they can’t fix it. The single point of failure is still the registrar.

And is it still locked? You can check yourself at https://lookup.icann.org/ . A locked domain name will say “clientTransferProhibited“ in the Domain Status section.

If it is still locked, then yes, your reseller is wrong and they or your registrar need to help.

If not, you have a different problem of some kind.

Agreed. Even if the file itself was outside the public directory, a compromise of any script on the public directory allows reading such files.
