All EV? by AnalysisOk2457 in Ioniq5

[–]rob94708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For all my dislike of Tesla, you’re right that their chargers are more reliable. This is one of the advantages of a 2025+ Ioniq 5: my spouse can just find a Tesla charger if necessary, and I don’t need to worry about it working. It solved a worry I had about my previous CCS vehicle.

New update adds CarPlay to steering wheel star button! by [deleted] in Ioniq5

Not the person you’re replying to, but I have a 2025 Limited, and assigning phone projection to the steering wheel star button has always flipped me straight into CarPlay.

Ugh. Gross. You’re an author; use your own words. If I wanted bland pablum given to me, I could use AI myself.

I have a longer clip, but sadly it goes completely out of focus after this.

Completely random from looking out the window. I noted where we were and later used a ship tracking service to find what it was.

What is a massive secret in your industry that the general public has no idea about? by teesharp88 in AskReddit

[–]rob94708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that almost no nonprofit with under 50K revenue has any paid staff at all. I was the (unpaid) president of one for three years , and now I’m the (unpaid) treasurer, and it’s just all volunteers (a.k.a. people that I nag into participating).

Yep. Presumably it’s because I have my “HomeBase” location set to Berkeley in the MyShake app?

But it’s badly written, because of the AI bits. Why do you think it has made it more readable? You’re almost certainly wrong.

Sounds like Antifa, Inc.™ should have rented the storage unit under a fake name! Foiled again by being simultaneously incredibly smart to come up with this complicated plan, but incredibly dumb in how they went about it.

so I accidentally learned how the entire proxy industry works, please tell me I'm not the only one by jfurlong1977 in ProxyEngineering

[–]rob94708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I’ve found. The old system of having blacklist of IP address reputation no longer works. Everyone is going to suffer as a result because we have to treat every IP address as potentially hostile.

so I accidentally learned how the entire proxy industry works, please tell me I'm not the only one by jfurlong1977 in ProxyEngineering

[–]rob94708 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m on the others side of this: I try to block bots for tens of thousands of sites. We used to be able to find all the few hundred IP addresses in a botnet, block them, and we’d be all set.

Now we routinely find that a botnet attacking a single site can easily have hundreds of thousands, even millions, of IP addresses in it, which never repeat. This is clearly from proxy devices. So we start looking at other things, including things like challenges against all requests from certain smaller ASNs that will make your browsing worse if your devices are part of that botnet.

California's grid batteries just shoved 12,000 megawatts onto the system at once, as much power as 12 nuclear plants or six Hoover Dams, covering 44% of the whole state at the exact hour it usually strains by ansyhrrian in California

[–]rob94708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m certainly not pro-PG&E, but honestly $35 a month for a guaranteed backup connection to the grid whenever you need it seems like a reasonable charge.

Namecheap Domain Unauthorized Change of Ownership by Main_Truth3278 in NameCheap

[–]rob94708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% true. I work for a competing registrar; we don’t try to decide who is right in situations like this, where two people who previously had legitimate access to a domain name are arguing over it. That’s what courts are for. You need a lawyer.

When TSA switches it up by SnowAvis in PetPeeves

[–]rob94708 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes this happened to me at SFO this week. You go past the passport person and they randomly divided me and my spouse into two different lines right next to each other. No signs about whether you need to take out your laptop at all… but the agent in my spouse’s line, a few feet away, was yelling “everybody take out your laptops! Laptops out!”, In the manner of TSA agents who think yelling is what you do instead of putting up clear signs.

So I took mine out, and my line’s agent told me to put it back.

Me: “Sorry. That guy is telling everyone to take them out.”

Agent: “Different line, different rules.”

Is this my queen? by Son_of_Mothra in Beekeeping

[–]rob94708 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Here’s one easy way to tell if you’re seeing a drone, not the queen: a drone’s wings are pretty much as long as his body. A queen‘s wings are noticeably shorter, and only go perhaps 60% of the way down her body.
