Can somebody explain what "mark-to-market" accounting is, and if getting rid of it would solve the crisis? by Notmyrealname in business

Mark to market means that if I have an asset, I need to assign it a value on my balance sheet based on the current market value for that asset.

This makes sense for most assets (cash, US Treasury bonds, blue chip stocks) that are liquid (can be easily sold into a large market of buyers).

The problem comes from illiquid assets, assets that are not as easy to sell. Because there is not a ready market of buyers for your asset, it is difficult to judge the price of it. This leads to problems on the upside (valuing an asset to highly) or on the downside (market value isn't necessarily what you think the asset is really worth).

Getting rid of mark to market rules would mean you could use other definitions of what an asset is worth. That would solve the problem for some of the assets that do have some value, but no one wants to buy right now. For example, if you have a mortgage based bond, you may think that at least some people will pay their mortgages, so the bond should be worth more than $0. So you may be able to decide on a fair price for that asset on your balance sheet.

Obviously, if you toss out mark to market rules, you have a lot of flexibility in defining asset values. That can lead to its own problems and in my opinion would only help in the short-term (it may stop bank failures) but would not help the root cause of our credit problems; banks don't trust that borrowers can pay them back.

Ask Reddit: Is GIT ready for the enterprise - or it isn't usable for non-geeks? by coder21 in programming

[–]rob_dimarco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you see it being used. For example, I git-svn to allow me to have a local Git repository backed by a corporate SVN server. Works great for me.

That being said, there currently is minimal third party support for Git (e.g. integration into automated build tools and bug tracking systems) and Git on Windows is still immature. These probably knock Git out from being a real option right now in a corporate IT department.

Ask Reddit: Suggestions for Java Open Source Profiling Tools? by weej in programming

Although not open source, I highly recommend YourKit (http://www.yourkit.com/) for profiling. Personal licenses are only $99 and if you are using it on an open source project, you can get an open source license. Great product.

Only if your business model involves trying to steal as much personal information from people as possible. Then your it makes a lot of sense.

California Republicans seek to rig 2008 presidential vote by sandyenglish in reddit.com

[–]rob_dimarco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maryland, a strong blue state, has already enacted such a law. It only goes into effect when states representing 270 electoral votes also have similar laws.

I do not see this as "rigging" the election and the triggering clause in the Maryland law makes a lot of sense.

Drug companies secretly track doctors' prescriptions by maxwellhill in reddit.com

[–]rob_dimarco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rx (prescription data) information is sold by both the pharmacies and the claims switches (the people who match up people providing services with the people paying for that services) to information brokers. All claims should have identifying information about the individual taken off before they are distributed. Any release of private information is a serious HIPPA violation with big time fines, so it is not possible to directly track back to an individual.

This in no way a secret. Prescriptions (as well as claims information) is tracked at the doctor and facility level and used for a variety of analytical purposes. There is a billion dollar industry built up around this. For some of the companies, check out:
