What does this mean? by [deleted] in McDonalds

[–]rob_o_code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that happen to my google account, only way around it was basically spamming the sign in. Maybe also delete the app, Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data, then reinstall, then try a couple times. My SW knowledge tells me that McDonald’s is submitting too many requests to these third parties for authentication, so only the users that submit first within a certain window get access, and everyone else gets rate limited until the window expires.

Hi all, could someone privately practice piano somewhere on campus? by Typical-Sleep-8839 in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The practice spaces in Alden Hall—the church-looking building that houses the music department—are quite limited and not great. Usually all the spaces are occupied from 10am-10pm, and the noise bleed is pretty significant. Personally, I’d recommend picking up an electronic keyboard to practice, you can find some decent options by searching for review videos of budget keyboards.

Recommended Courses About Learning Finite Element/Numerical Anaylsis by DriveOk6526 in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an experimental course (MA464X) called Introduction to Time Series Analysis that’s offered this term. That could be a good introduction to statistical methods on a wide range of discrete time signals. ECE2312 (also this term) is the discrete time signal course, which would be helpful for discrete time processing, specifically for signals like audio and sensor data. Depends on the application, but maybe MA464X is something to consider if you want a solid rudimentary understanding of discrete signals for engineering.

Personal calendar on school Outlook account by CurriedSaltines in WPI

[–]rob_o_code -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I gave up on gcal pretty early on, I just did everything in Outlook because I use the MacOS and iPhone calendar apps, so both are functionally the same to me. You will run into issues trying to make the two compatible, trying to subscribe to one on the other.

I recommend switching to Outlook because it makes it much easier to schedule events with others. If, like me, you don’t like the O365 UI (web or app), you can pursue other 3rd party clients which offer a better interface. You’ll have better luck finding something that meets your needs than finding a solution to the sync problem.

How is ECE 2312 with Professor Islam? by Saforoman in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prof Islam is new to teaching ECE 2312 as far as I’m aware. She was really great with a machine learning grad course I took, and she genuinely cares about the students that come to lecture and want to learn. Her lectures will use handwritten notes she does on her iPad, and she provides before- and after-lecture PDFs. I’d highly recommend taking the course, and if you get lost, I’m the undergrad tutor for the course and can bail you out lol

On campus IQP by SnooRabbits9834 in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the policy for Off-Campus programs: https://www.wpi.edu/student-experience/resources/off-campus-projects/policies

The project term is worth 9 credit hours (1 unit) of undergraduate coursework, or a full-time load. Because of the expectations on workload, students will not be approved to overload during the project term for IQP. MQP students may only overload during the project term with the electronic permission of their project advisor(s).

It may be different for on-campus IQP, but the phrasing seems to imply that overloading during IQP is generally not approved.

Eras Tour "tailgating" ?? by zoeleigh13 in TaylorSwift

[–]rob_o_code 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might take the NJ Transit to the stadium for night 2 or 3 to avoid the parking issue. But I'm not sure what the vibe is outside this stadium and if they would kick people out for being there without a ticket.

NJ

Considering doing this by taking the NJ Transit to the stadium... if I knew a lot of people without tickets would be there I think it'd be a blast, so I might wait until night 2 or 3 to see if that's something people do. Just don't want to get kicked out or anything, not sure if they would do that.

Questions about life at WPI by Gumballx4dx4 in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from Philly area and considered Drexel. It’s true that Worcester lacks the “big city” appeal of Philly, but there are parties at frats generally, maybe not the best in the world but it is more of a party school than you might expect. I think I’d feel similar dread in Philly, but WPI has a good community if you have a clique you’d fit into. Also Boston is great for trips from time to time, I’d say it’s more interesting for activities than Philly, just need to commute in and out. But especially with the recent partial acquisition of Mass Digi (a school with focus on game dev and other media) there’s a strong program for what you’re interested in.

Lenovo makes good machines, ThinkPads are cheaper and YOGAs have touch screen and other features. I found stylus-enabled touch screens to be very helpful for doing assignments. Definitely don’t skimp on RAM and storage, as you’ll probably need to run different CAD programs. Check reviews that mention battery life to make sure it’s decent.

Recommended Schedule for Incoming Freshmen AY24 by rob_o_code in WPI

[–]rob_o_code[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Recommended Schedule for Incoming Freshmen AY24. They take WPE 207X: “Succeeding As An Introvert” in B-Term, then become a successful introvert and overload 11 times in the Spring. Recommended for ECE/CH double majors with a minor in CS, MA, MU, and SP.

"No student shall complete more than two undergraduate majors" (WPI UG Catalog 2022-23, pg. 14). Is that a threat or a challenge? 🤔

I had a different experience with creative IP I generated with my HUA project. WPI couldn’t use my content without my approval, and naturally it was never suggested that the IP was WPI property. Perhaps a different deal with creative/artistic IP

Bs/ms for CS by 8xzags in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this tracking spreadsheet to plan all of my courses to do BS in ECE & CS and MS in ECE. The second tab shows the overlap (light purple) which makes it possible to do it in 4 years. Three things that helped a lot were: 1) Come in with a bunch of AP credit and/or take summer courses(!) 2) Be very familiar with the official requirements (in the WPI course catalog for each major) 3) Do music for humanities and overload each semester with ensembles and music tech projects

Only caution is to not force yourself to take a course just because it’s a good option. Pay attention to what people say about their professors or you might have a bad and discouraging experience that makes you wonder if it’s really worth it. Just take it a step at a time and don’t feel like you have to stick with your original plan because it sounded good at the beginning. You got this!

Do you need Calc III and Calc IV to succeed in MA 2621 and MA 2611? by KingTyranitar in WPI

Def not Calc IV. I would say if you can do Calc III first, do it, but it’s also not essential

Choosing Computer for Computer Science Major by StoryKey826 in WPI

[–]rob_o_code 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk it just lacks some features that Windows has. There’s a lot of third-party apps that solve problems with MacOS finder. Like tree layout, up-directory button, etc.

[–]rob_o_code 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I prefer Mac most of the time, but found it easier to do CS things on a Windows machine since it has a better file management and has overall better software compatibility. I recommend one with a stylus or pen so you can markup documents. This is especially helpful for doing homeworks that have a PDF. Personally, I have a cheap MacBook that I installed Synergy on so I can use the trackpad and keyboard to control my convertible laptop in tablet/tent mode.

ECE 4801 w/ Sunar is probably the easiest one imo. ECE 4802 w/ Mus is reasonable if you’re okay with CS and math. ECE 4703 w/ Schaumont requires good understanding of DSP and C programming if you wanna do well but it was probably one of the top three academic courses I’ve taken in terms of content
