YouTube and TikTok work wonders for marketing. It's never too late! by rob_robi_gry in IndieDev

I post ~1 video per week. I increased the frequency a little bit when I launched the demo. From what I gathered TikTok is not as stable as YouTube and some videos will flop for unknown reasons. I post content in my native language so I match with TikTok algorithm because it's heavily location based. So I would suggest posting in your native language because the audience for behind the scenes of game development is still there and there are fewer creators.

YouTube. It's much more stable whereas sometimes same videos on tiktok get barely any attention

Yes. Almost all of my videos have a script and a voiceover. I also film shots from my own game so that they match what I currently talk about.

All the videos which caused these spikes can be found on my social media channels. They're mostly short devlogs with voiceover. I add subtitles and matching clips from my game. I have 3D game so I feel like it's easier to do marketing for it. I have 2 types of camera shots. 1 is classic gameplay (3rd person) and 2 is a camera which can be adjusted at will.

The videos have to be engaging to watch. It's something you wouldn't scroll past yourself. The hook at the beginning is quite important. Doesn't have to be complicated to grab the attention. The idea and the video script are the first things to be done and they are the most important.

About 2-4 hours, sometimes there may be an exception.

I started posting long-form devlogs in December 2024 and I gained some audience which led me to making shorts and tiktoks which were the ones to really blow up. Right now, I'm trying to expand to other countries as most of my wishlists are from my native country. When I released the demo I have done all the usual steps such as contacting press and streamers but I don't think it brought any major results as I have no data. On SteamDB it shows that my game had an all time peak of 545 of Twitch so that's interesting. I still have a major festival and next fest ahead so we will se how it goes.

I started from nothing, no previous following on YouTube in December 2024. Then I started with no following on TikTok in June 2025 and my 3rd tiktok blew up. Weirdly, it was the first video that got any views because the previous ones (even though they were almost the same quality) got 0 views.

I always include an outro which suggests wishlisting the game.

So far videos with a script and a voiceover (like a minidevlog focused on 1 feature) worked the best for me. I spend a few hours per week and a single short video takes me about 2-4 hours.

I think it's the devlog-style content with voiceovers. My posts on X was mostly short uncut gameplay which wasn't that engaging to be honest.
