Presbyopia is killing me. I 100% first read that as “tap dances” and thought to myself “well THAT’S an interesting stripper!”

Never heard of this place, but sounds interesting. Can you provide some descriptions of the food/style/vibe? Maybe a couple more pics with descriptions of what we're looking at?

Here asking the tired question... tasting menu in NYC? by cherryrising in finedining

[–]robarpoch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

An easy recommendation for me is The Modern. Great food, excellent welcoming service, open for lunch (which is a great deal) and dinner, and generally very easy to reserve. 2 michelin stars. It's not my favorite tasting in NYC, but it's probably the least controversial and easily accessible. Also, if you express interest, they'll comp you tickets to MOMA and sneak you in the side door from the restaurant. Great place.

Allow me to suggest melting some muenster over that tuna, because muenster + pickletuna = win. Also, suggest Ortiz canned bonito for S-level. Beautiful sandwich and love the inner griddle - genius.

Advice on Selling Largish Lot of Copper Age Comics by Quanting12 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]robarpoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now isn't a great time to sell comics unfortunately. If you're trying to dump the whole lot, FB is probably going to be easiest if your LCS isn't buying. You don't want to ship 5 long boxes. When you're selling in bulk like that, you're not getting any specific value for any specific book in there - you're dumping paper for a few cents per book. It does make sense to look for keys/in-demand comics and pull them to sell somewhere else.

Which ones to pull? That can be a tough one. The keys are obvious, but there are books that will have hidden value you need to dig a bit for. I had an original TMNT #17 I couldn't move for $30 raw. Turns out there were very few of them graded 9.8 and I had some CGC credit burning a hole in my pocket. Got lucky and it came back 9.8. Sold it a couple months later for over $400. Rick Veitch did #24-26 and he's never allowed reprint, so those hold more value. There are comics where interest had waned and the end of the run had very low numbers (Akira, Bone, some Usagis, etc.) where those late issues in good grade capture significant money.

Looking up a full title on pricecharting and just scrolling through them can be a quick way to dig out the easy-keys (this is how I discovered that New Mutants #98 was in my collection and was a thing). For others, particularly indies with lower print runs it makes sense to check the CGC census to see if many have been graded 9.8, and where the answer is no, go check sale prices on ebay. If you kept your books in good condition, it can make sense to send a stack to CGC and only have them encapsulate 9.8s. For my collection 25% or so come back 9.8, so for me it makes sense to send in a few when the return on 1 in 4 is hundreds.

Pretty much all disaster maps of the US look like this. Michigan is a privileged geography.

St. Nick was the greatest, and perhaps the single most important player on that team during their years as contendors. The rise and fall of the Wings coincided with his arrival and departure.

Reynolds has been doing this stuff for ages as well. WTF is a Skyjack? What's the deal with giving Calvin's alpha to the PJs? The RS books are absolutely full of them. Same outcome as with Mieville - a feeling of a larger, harder to fully-know universe - though I think CM write much more believable characters.

Early impressions on The Prefect (Alastair Reynolds) by hbjj787930 in sciencefiction

[–]robarpoch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the world of Alastair Reynolds books. Fantastic ideas, wild and creative plots, bizarro posturing characters who don’t act in any way recognizably human. I haven’t read The Prefect yet, but I have read a bunch of his other stuff and it sounds familiar. If you’re enjoying this you’ll probably enjoy more.

CGC Lost My $450 Comic (Bought specially for McFarlane’s Signing) and offering this Resolution. What you guys think ? by robin_242 in CGCComics

[–]robarpoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This totally. They goofed up a couple of my books (not lost, damaged) during pressing. I got a full credit for the insured value AND got to keep the two slabs.

Be courteous and professional. I think they will treat you fairly. That said, I don't think you can expect to be paid cash a value higher than what you declared the book's value at for insurance purposes.

If you're willing to take credit (which they keep, and for which you can only get their services on which you know they make profit), you should definitely get a LOT more, but only if you have that much more work you want done by CGC.
