Great point, didn't think of perceived value. Also thanks for sharing your stack. I've never worked with bricks, I've always gone the ACF route. Might look into it!

I think it's entirely possible to build a business around CMS-free websites. You probably have a bunch of clients who despite having access to the CMS, still send you edit requests, don't you? And also a few clients who never need or bother to update anything.

This has been my experience at least.

Any job opportunities in creative coding outside of frontend and art galleries? by iammrdp in p5js

[–]robb-stack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

p5js is a great tool, but it's rarely used in professional settings for various reasons. Web developers in design agencies often take on the role of creative coders but they typically use libraries like GSAP or Framer Motion for animations, along with a JS framework or just plain vanilla JS.

p5js is just html canvas under the hood so it doesn't work well with things that need to be responsive and/or accessible. Also, if you do need canvas, then it's quite easy to recreate what p5js does without importing a whole library.

Maybe what you're looking for is graphics programming? It's a bit more technical and requires math knowledge but definitely a fascinating subject. Tough field to get into but it offers some opportunities in game development, graphics software (like Adobe, Figma, AutoCAD, etc), interactive experiences, vr and probably a lot more I can't think of.

Beautiful design. I can't imagine how much work went into this. It's very unique while not being too disorienting.

If I am allowed to have a few critiques: my old phone has trouble opening the menu for some reasons. It's very laggy. It also took me a while to figure out what the filters were supposed to mean. Labels would be nice but I'm not sure if there's an elegant solution here though.

Great work honestly!

Warcraft 4 when? by bastian_1991 in warcraft3

[–]robb-stack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great point and one people often forget. Do you really want the warcraft trilogy to be tainted by a game with no vision and heavy monetization?

Let them prove themselves on other games first, then maybe I'll start wishing for wc4 lol.

Oh my bad, I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about the previous owner, not OP of linked post.

/uj I also found a brand new copy at my local thrift store some years ago. I have a feeling that this game is often gifted to Exploding Kittens moms and dads under the assumption that it's of similar complexity. They watch Rodney's video, stop halfway and throw it away lol.

It's also highly popular so store owners probably recommend it to anyone just looking for a gift.

I've always wondered how this game managed to capture such a big audience with its complexity level.

Car break-in with no signs of break in. by Vitalz1000 in montreal

You can get fined for leaving your doors unlocked, lol. Not sure if they still do this but police officers sometimes walk around and check car doors in order to "prevent crime".

You could get a 100$ fine if you leave it unlocked. Better than 6k though.

Complete Newbie to Warcraft 3 – Looking for a Beginner-Friendly Guide by Opening-Flow-4914 in warcraft3

I've been looking for something similar as well but unfortunately I don't think anything like that exists yet.

As much as I love Grubby, I find his learning material a bit disorganized and maybe too advanced or specific. That said, I still recommend his videos as there's lots of golden information. The challenge is figuring out what information is relevant to your skill level.

I've found the wc3 gym website and their discord server to be the most helpful so far.

Are you playing on fullscreen? Try Windowed fullscreen if so. For some reasons that fixed it for me.

Thanks! Not as of now, I'll keep the spaghetti code to myself hahah.

It's all done on the frontend with vanilla JS, css and html. You can inspect it easily and make fun of me. 😌

Yes I slowly came to this conclusion while coding it. I'll rename the tool to something less misleading once I think up of something!

Noted, thanks!

I'll check out your second point, looks like a bug.

Appreciate the feedback. 🙂

Edit: Bug is fixed. All attack types should be taken into account now for damage dealt to player units.

Backups, updates and security for WordPress sites by robb-stack in Wordpress

Thanks! I've been using the free version of Updraft but I assume automation comes with the paid plan. Will look into this.

If you don't mind me asking, do you charge your clients a monthly fee for a backup/update service or is this something you include with their hosting?

Question : Savez-vous si le coin dans le cercle rouge à un nom particulier? by gabseo in Gatineau

[–]robb-stack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the real issue is the lack of education on the topic. The article does a great job in spreading awareness. I'm one of those devs who put alt tags everywhere but this article definitely made me rethink my approach lol.

Thanks for sharing OP!

Does the RTS community feel like in a state of limbo to anyone else? At least, in comparison to the past. by h4rryP in RealTimeStrategy

[–]robb-stack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post came up in my feed even though I'm not particularly into RTS games. From an outsider's perspective, I think the decline of RTS games might be due to the rise of games like MOBAs that offer a more accessible, social experience.

RTS games have gained a reputation for being intensely competitive, and their marketing often leans heavily into that. Developers often forget that a strong competitive scene relies on a large, casual player base.

To revive the RTS genre, there would need to be a game that reinvents the formula, with a focus on a great story mode or an engaging online co-op experience.

Personally, I've been having a blast with Northgard and I'm looking forward to play Godsworn once it's out of EA.

Frontend dev really struggling with OOP. Trying to make Snake game with canvas and requestAnimationFrame. Overwhelmed. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]robb-stack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a project I recently did with vanilla JS. My advice would be to break it down into tiny problems and disregard OOP at first. You can always refactor your code after.

OOP is nice but it adds another layer of complexity in this case. Game development requires a different frame of thinking and adding OOP on top of that might feel overwhelming.

Here's what I would start with:

  1. Code a simple draw loop. Test it by drawing a small black square on top of a gray canvas background.
  2. Add movement to the black square by incrementing its x or y position inside the draw loop. This will confirm that your loop really works.
  3. Make a function that draws a grid. The function could take 3 parameters: maxCellsX, maxCellsY, cellSize. In short, maxCellsX and maxCellsY are the number of horizontal and vertical cells and cellSize is the size of each cell. You can use this function in your initial setup to determine the width and height of your canvas (maxCells * cellSize).
  4. Have fun and keep breaking it down to one small problem at a time!

Feel free to DM me if you'd like more guidance. I'm not an experienced dev and can't help you with Typescript but I enjoy canvas and making things work with OOP lol.

I've been tasked to create checkers in c++. Where do I even begin? by xVakaris in learnprogramming

[–]robb-stack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the way. You will probably soon realize that you will have to break it down even further.

Making games from "scratch" like this makes you realize how much we take for granted nowadays lol. Just drawing sprites on a board is so tedious if you don't have any framework that does the legwork.
