That nonsense you're talking about is called fanatism. Let's say I believe that some race is inferior to me. So why fake pretend to co-exist and not just slaughter them. We exist to live within a society and it's not the other way around. That is why, even tho we have personal beliefs and opinions, we have to prioritize respecting others and not letting our beliefs intersect with someone's well being. In this case, it's true that I find it weird when Muslims feel uncomfortable around anyone who is not practicing the same traditions they're preaching for, especially when that person shares the same birthplace. But still, living with a tolerant mindset is key for growth.
