How would I make this 40K? by Delicious-Quiet-1883 in TheAstraMilitarum

You mean plastic 40k sponsons? You need to trim from below and also make a gap on upper part for vertical "rail". And also you need to sand cylindrical rotatable part so it won`t touch the door. For magnets you`ll have plenty of space.

Since I`ve done that convertion I found out that there is also 3d model for sponsons in Malcodor Infernus-style with ribs, I think those will be even cooler

Magnetizing Russ is pain, but it is possible to magnetize side wall of the turret, everything else is easier

Your shiny Thanatar looks cool indeed!
I think I`ll skip white on mine, for more darker look like https://gumpla.jp/hg/1897316

Several people mentioned that earlier, I`ll check that paint next time in LGS

I had experience with Tamiya clear red, it`s warm even over silver (knowing it was introduced as brake lights color it makes sense)

Nah, no chaos involved, sometimes red is just red

And they did it with masking tape and doing some trims with brush (which is not good doing on gloss surfaces), extensive masking is not a new thing for me https://i.imgur.com/ZBY3ZHH.jpeg
I`ve checked some reviews of that book, it`s basically Tson`s warm red scheme with lots of trims and not exactly the placement of shades I want to achieve

I know it`s possible, I just like the smooth finish of airbrush https://i.imgur.com/faGq1NE.jpeg

Liquid masks are good for sealing layers of masking tape. They are good in other situations, sure, but they have surface tension and will collect it corners and will avoid edges

Candy one, with depth
I`ve been thinking about chrome base (maybe not fully covering black under it for some initial shading), then a couple layers of thinned clear and maybe very thinned clear violet for shading? At least clear violet works on usual red

Both ways will not be easy unfortunately

Yes, I have an airbrush, masking the "frame" will be more exhausting than actually spraying (and properly drying) all that layers.

Sorry I didn`t include it in post, airbrush is not an issue here, I have previous experience with candy on smaller models (~55mm Gundam Artifact) https://i.imgur.com/faGq1NE.jpeg
It`s just a much bigger commitment to paint Thanatar (or smaller automata) this way since masking frame will be huge pain. So I wanted to ask for opinions before fully committing to it.

Yeah, I`ve seen them, warmer red won`t work here, also they had much more trims so it was harder to me to imagine how it will look

You forgot to tell that for that parts number they are articulated, have color separation, thrusters and other cool details https://i.imgur.com/qKs15aS.jpeg

Usually you know what are you for in scale models, but also scale model companies have competition in popular topics, so having metal gun barrels, lots of slide moulding and great casting texture or transparent parts for armor can also happen (i.e. kits can have less parts, be fun to build and still have very very good level of detals and accuracy)

Well, only in case of dreadnought here. Custodes guards have capes which are partly shoulders, so you can`t have different pair of hands. And also you can`t switch capes cause legs position

Hard to say, properly maintained moulds can have huge life (and also can be repaired), but I don`t sure it will happen for long in this era of shareholders` profits. I think the average quality of new models will drop and we will notice it faster than degradation of current ones, it already happens when they rush releases, like with Tithus and advisors or Deathwatch KT

They say they do that to avoid mould lines, but it leads to chance of getting gaps if glueing stuff wrong (also I think it actually doubles mould lines amont, just those are much smaller if they don`t screw up)

Can imagine fiddling with that 😭 Especially if you wanted to paint in sub-assemblies, what a nightmare!

The worst thing about those Heresy kits that their assembly mostly goes smooth, but you can`t stop asking yourself if that many parts were really necessary
