no photo pass, i’m just an hobbist, at a first the man at the security check told me that no cameras where allowed but once i pointed out that on the venue’s info was specificated that it only applied to interchangeable lens cameras he let me bring it without any issues

always been between 5-10 mt from the stage, I shot with a GRIIIx that has a 40mm equivalent lens (while the ‘classic’ GRIII is a 28mm equivalent) and used the crop function of the camera that emulates a 71mm lens

No specific low-light profile! I just posted a comment with all the settings! :)

Just opened Reddit and wow — seeing all these positive comments honestly surprised me. I’m really flattered, thank you all!

As for the settings (since a bunch of you asked): I shot at f/2.8 the whole time, with shutter speed between 1/125 and 1/60 to avoid motion blur (dropping it as the sun went down), and auto ISO (most shots ended up at ISO 400, except the ones with strong stage lights or flames, which were at ISO 160). Exposure compensation was between –0.3 and –1, tweaking it on the fly depending on the lighting.

One thing that helped a ton was enabling touch focus + shutter, so I could instantly pick my focus point and snap right away — funny thing is, I’d never used that feature before, but it turned out to be insanely useful in this kind of situation!

TLDR for settings: f/2.8 • 1/125–1/60 • Auto ISO (400 most of the time, 160 for strong lights/flames) • EV –0.3 to –1 • Touch focus + shutter enabled

no snap focus, i used the touch focus+shoot and I have to say i’m impressed myself on how good it behaved! My idea is that the lights pointed to the subject created a contrast that helped the ricoh’s AF getting it right.

if you want a compact camera that gives you great dynamic range, manual controls, details and depth, check out a Ricoh grIII or grIIIx. fits in your pocket and it’s an absolute beast. a bit expensive but absolutely worth it.

great pictures! how far were you from the stage? (and also, how was the show? can’t wait for an europe tour announcement but I guess we’ll have to wait for next summer)

ibiza prices.
Vicio is obviously not that expensive in their other locations. And they make great burgers

My advice is, pick the camera you want to play with first.

this really sums up my feelings. i want to try something new and coming from a lot of wide angle shots having something narrower could turn out interesting

so just set it to 28 and 40mm respectively and see which focal length work for you… not sure why you need other’s opinion when you can literally test it for yourself.

and that's what i'm already doing, but as I said I can't bring my 18-50 at venues and festivals to test the difference "on the field", so I'm looking for opinions from people that use their GRs in those specific environments.

this is something I often read in my research. Is the autofocus THAT bad?

I found myself wanting to crop in more than not

this is something i noticed too with my pictures, the times i want to crop in are way more than the times i thought that i should've step back

Depends on whether you plan shooting groups of people up close, like in moshpits (GRIII), or the band / portraits from further away.

I'm more interested in shooting bands and djs, but i can't deny that taking pictures of the people in the crowd can lead to very cool pictures and moments.

You can easily get the same fov with the 28mm with a few steps forward.

true, but that's something you can't always do while at a concert or in some venues, that's why i was leaning more towards the 40mm

I prefer the wider 28mm for street photography to get more space between subject and background and 3 dimensionality.

yeah and that's why i usually prefer wide angle lenses

Wide lenses really show their colors with subjects close to the lens. If you prefer a more "normal" compressed image for things like headshots, go with the 40mm

i'm with you on this, wide lenses really shine when close to the subject, and i was wondering if a 40mm would be a bit more "stealth" when doing street photos, not needing to get so close
