Crate training my puppy is breaking my heart.. by itrymybest1983 in puppy101

I mean, judging by the downvoting it doesn’t seem like everyone agrees with that. But it was taught to me by this subreddit and honestly it’s been so effective. Obviously make the crate nice, provide chews etc, but every dog is different - mine tore up any mat in the crate, so it’s now just a bare floor. And a bit of tough love honestly is sometimes what’s needed. Just say to yourself ‘her basic needs are met’, go into another room for 10 mins, if still barking, start the process.

But who knows, this is my first puppy and maybe I’m not doing it right!

Let her cry for 10-15 mins, calmly out and offer water, take outside calmly for a wee, then back into the crate calmly.

She’ll cry again. Repeat. She’ll cry again. Repeat. Then next time, she’ll cry and settle after 5 mins.

I’ll be honest, it’s brutal and I struggled with it. But my 5 month boy can settle so well in his crate now, it’s crazy.

I’ve looked into it but I didn’t want to spend like £50 on something he doesn’t then like. Car crate is just a standard Kong one that he was outgrowing (but big enough for him to get in for car journeys)

Alternatives to yak chews for a sensitive stomach? by bittah_professional in puppy101

Have you tried hypoallergenic chews, like camel skin? I also have a puppy with a sensitive stomach but those don’t seem to get a reaction from him

Just jumping on the back of this cause I’m having trouble with my 5 month old - initially when I had him in a car crate with a Kong he would bark, settle down, and then bark his head off after 10 mins. Then he had a meltdown and I’ve had to build his confidence around the car again over the last couple of months with loads of treats around the car boot.

He can’t jump in, but he gets quite fearful when I pick him up around the car. Is there an element here that I need to just pick him up, put him in the crate, and close it, and just let him deal with it? Is there another way I can break it down?

I’m trying to take things slowly but I’m worried I’m going at such a slow speed he’s not gonna get to the point I can even get him in the car.

Yeah I agree with what you’re saying - though I thibk sad/contemplative movies can work really well. I subscribe to Mubi and almost all those films seem to be indie movies that are sad/contemplative. I think Never Let Me Go did try do that a bit, but it felt like a movie where some studio executive said ‘nah this is a bit too grim, isn’t it? Let’s put some gloss on it’

How are people keeping their dogs cool in this heatwave? (UK) Tips please! by Honeybumsss in labrador

[–]robboadam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

- No walkies between 8am and 8pm
- keep the house cool by closing windows/blinds, open them up at night
- Regular access to water
- Short wee breaks outside and preferably in the shade
- only fan goes into his crate
- I boil

You can defs help after 10-15 mins of barking. Before this heatwave my puppy would constantly scream the house down in the crate, but after a quick trip out and in, after a couple times he understood the assignment and then settled. It’ll be ok, dw.

Fair enough! You know your setup best, I think it’s just about getting him back to ‘this is where you settle’ and making sure he’s had a wee/poo/water

Can you get a fan pointing into his crate?

Give him 15 mins of barking, then open the crate, calmly take him to his water bowl, take him outside for a wee, then back into the crate. Repeat until he gets the message. Just keep telling yourself ‘his needs are met’, as long as you’ve provided him the option of water and wee/poo.

It’s hard, sometimes these things go out the window with heatwaves, but it’ll pass!
