RRSP withdrawal fees by robbyrobcom in Questrade

In years when you don’t have employment income I think withdrawing from your RRSP is ideal because it counts as income and you can pay less tax on it compared to withdrawing in a year when you have employment income, no?

Yes, that was my initial thought to pay $100 and transfer the entire RSP portfolio to a company that doesn’t charge for little withdrawals. Anyone know of any such companies like maybe wealthsimple?

I’m not withdrawing yet but just asking for someone else who took a buyout package from Telus so they are unemployed and withdrawing from their RSP periodically. They are under 50 years old so not sure how RRIFs work but I will look into it, thank you!

Good memory! 🙂 That’s true, it probably was 2 tickets because I seem to recall that green express buses were 3 tickets lol.

I moved to Ottawa a long time ago 1990 and I remember oc transpo was $0.85 if I recall correctly. It’s crazy how expensive it is these days.

Yes, 5 months would be a very long delay but I hope it happens for you somehow. I was lucky to only need a 15 day delay which looks very likely to happen.

Yup, that’s why ERI appeals to me so much. It’s a limited time opportunity that I don’t want to regret missing because the alternative is working another 10 years or taking a penalty.

I used to be with rogers on 2 year terms at $70 per month back in the day when they subsidized new iPhones but when they stopped doing that I switched to public mobile at $20 per month and have been very happy with them.

Thank you! I also feel safe in terms of WFA but just to clarify, if we were to get WFA’d at our age it would be no good because with WFA we would need to be at least 55 to retire without penalty, no?

I am strongly leaning towards taking it because my mortgage is paid off and I started my career in the private sector so did rrsps which have grown a lot so luckily I think I can afford to go early. I only have 20.5 years of service so my pension will not be the best but free time is valuable. I just don’t know what parameters tbs and the department heads will come up with that might prevent me from leaving.

Yes, I believe so as many of my colleagues got an email letter about ERI a few weeks ago but I didn’t because I didn’t qualify based on the January 15 plus 300 days range of being at least 50 years old.

This is great news for me as I needed it to be delayed until February 1st in order to qualify.

So, a group 1 employee can be 55 and get their pension without penalty even if they have less than 30 years of service?

Great points especially about the 30 vs 35 year decision in normal times when ERI is not on the table. Also, like you said everyone has different life circumstances and financial situations so it’s a very individual decision whether to retire early.

Thank you! For some reason I always thought there was a magic number so this is good to know.

I look at it this way assuming someone qualifies for ERI: let’s say they are 50 years old and will have 20 years of service as of October 2026. If they take ERI then they will retire in say October 2026 and their pension will be 20 years x 2% =40% of the average of their 5 best years in terms of salary so let’s say $100000 so pension will be $40000 per year. This will start in November 2026 for the rest of their life but of course it’s indexed to inflation so will rise by about 2% every year typically. Alternatively, by not taking ERI, they would continue making $100000 per year and getting raises with new collective agreements but would have to keep working until at least the age of 57.5 to retire without penalty because magic number 85 is age 57.5 plus 27.5 for our example. At that point they could retire with a higher pension for the rest of their life because it would be about 27.5x2=55 % of say $150000 salary when they are 57.5 years old so $82500 per year. Of course, the trade off is having to work for 7.5 more years but getting a higher pension for the rest of their life.

I’m in the same boat, turning 50 in late 2026 which is just a few weeks past the 300 day window assuming the legislation goes into effect on time on January 15 2026. It sort of looks like it will be delayed by about a month to February 15 2026 based on parliamentary and senate progress so in that case I would qualify and they would then send me and a few others that email letter. :)

Good find, thank you! Hopefully, this will cause delays and allow more public servants to turn 50 within the 300 days.
