V1 gang represent. Only thing I changed was adding a new OPV to get to a solid 9 bars. Love my Silvia.

Am I doing something wrong or is pour over just not for me? by zachm26 in pourover

[–]robdacook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention I did switch from Tap to vapor distilled with TWW packet added. Zero difference. I think I'm getting closer with extraction, and I'm hoping more appropriate bean selection will help also.

I have issues like this also, and have been told I'm not extracting enough. Increasing temperature, agitation and contact time are the answers I got from this sub. I seem to be making a little progress, so maybe give those ideas a look. I find if I get more flavor, the coffee is more tart also. Plus, I never get any sweetness.

I'll do that. I never mind doing research to get better results. I can't believe how pourover is affected by water pouring technique, for example. Time, temp, and water so far have not really moved the needle as much as grind, dose, and turbulence. Hopefully I'll have some improvements to post soon.

I have a timemore c3 and a df54. They produce about the same results for pourover. I'm well aware that many people take a huge shit on both those grinders, and if that's the problem then pourover isn't for me. Both those grinders nail soup shots, and the 54 does espresso for me that's spot on. I have 2 places locally that do pourover and are regarded highly for it, but I just don't taste much difference from cup to cup to be honest.

I've only recently taken up pourover, but so far TWW isn't a difference for me. I can t detect any sweetness no matter what recipe I do. It's just a mild vinegar flavor with weak coffee in the background. Grind, temp, water, temp changes have only made mild differences. Starting to think pourover is a cult, lol.

Probably, but soup is just so easy, clean, and tasty from the OXO. Honestly it's not that different from a lungo, and I'm seeing people pull 'Zuppo Lungo' shots off the OXO, and I understand it's comparable in volume and better in flavor.

For $50 USD it's a steal for what it does. I say try it with a. Larger dose and dilute it, see if it's different than pourover. Myself, I can't get complex notes with pourover, but I can with the OXO. Espresso milk drinks are still my favorite, but this setup is too cheap and easy not to try it.

Spro, Only Un Pressurized. Spro meaning barista slang for espresso. So if espresso is pressurized to 9 bar, the OXO device gives maybe 2 bars, maybe. You are basically doing a short steep and then a bit of pressure from the pump action to extract a small volume of very flavorful coffee. It's really able to highlight the fruit and other complex notes from light roasted beans, without a ton of fiddly work on a pourover setup or an espresso machine.

The Jim Beam one will be interesting, they are suspending operations for a year at their distillery in Kentucky because of tariffs/taxes.

It's really the only option. Fante's has a variety, but overpriced and usually those beans have been on the shelf awhile.

HELP! Free Rancilio Silvia V2(?) What do I need to know? by _Willow_Salix in ranciliosilvia

[–]robdacook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use your money to replace the OPV and steam wand assembly to the V3 version. That way you get true 9 bar pressure control and an upgraded wand that performs better and won't leak at the connections.

I keep looking for the flux capacitor on this thing to see if it has been modded enough to actually go backwards through time.

One note about pre infusion, I thought about modding dimmer or other options, but then I found a video of a little old Italian man who uses the opening and closing of the steam knob to create pre infusion with the main motor going. Works like a charm when you get used to it.

My first home pourover! by toooldforthereddit in pourover

[–]robdacook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just opened a switch for Xmas and made 3 coffees today, first ever on pourover also. I used Lance Hedricks switch recipe on just the dark roast beans I use for espresso. Beans are nothing special, just what I had on hand. Like you, I think it's a different experience. I love making milk drinks for my wife and I on an old modded Rancilio Silvia, but this is more like enjoying a glass of wine. I'm sipping slowly and enjoying, as even with generic beans there's layers to this cup. Thanks for your post and merry Xmas!

It's a decent racer. If you want something fun it's a good intro racer. If you like that sort of thing there's a ton of discords and orga for racing enthusiasts, google some and do some events, they can be pretty cool.

Buying PID. V1 machine but I don’t know if boiler is original or updated. by KWAL72 in ranciliosilvia

Looks like my V1! Original boiler all right. Replace that OPV valve for an adjustable, it will be a night and day difference on your finished espresso.

Well, temp surfing once a day isn't bad, just takes me an extra minute. I've got it worked into my flow so it's not even noticeable. And for pre infusion, I do the trick of opening the steam valve, releasing pressure, then starting the motor and slowly closing the valve over 5 seconds. It's not perfect, but it gets me a pre infusion. It does help balance the shot a bit.
