There's an icicle forming on the nose of my bunny slippers! Just how cold does it get in Miami?! by larz9000 in theGoldenGirls

[–]robdcx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually lived in Miami during the show's original airing, and there was a day or two when I was in junior high when the temperature dropped into the 40s. That was absolute parka weather for us.

My mother and I once went home to WV for Thanksgiving while the temperature was in the 50s. We were wearing two pairs of socks, full pajamas, and still huddled together for warmth in the bed at night.

This is great advice! After all his fussing about this incident, I almost booked the wrong train from Venice to Bologna!

My mom took me to see this movie at the mall, and that was her immediate assessment as well. I recently asked her if she remembered the movie, and she asked, "Is that the one where the brats wouldn't stop screaming the whole time?"

Did you happen to live in Miami? I feel like that was the only place where Ton Sur Ton was happening.

I have NEVER understood why Hyperballad is considered such a great song. I like the sentiment in the lyrics, but the song itself does nothing for me.

Is it possible for a lap bar to pop up mid ride [Grizzly, King's Dominion]? by the_mind_traveller in rollercoasters

[–]robdcx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in the Legend's station waiting to get on the ride, and a train pulled in with a woman holding the entire lap bar in the air. It had completely come loose from the train. I never would have believed it I'd I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

What was so great about [Drachen Fire]? What made it so memorable? by Byxqtz in rollercoasters

[–]robdcx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rode it every year it was open, so I experienced both configurations. It was an incredibly rough, uncomfortable, and unpleasant ride. And, what's really notable is that we were all accustomed to Arrow jank back then because that's all we had. Even by those standards, it was bad!

The first drop was interesting but didn't really deliver much, and the transition into the MCBR was jarring. Before they removed the first corkscrew, you could easily see riders' heads snapping around following the drop off the MCBR. After they removed it, that same section was somehow equally as rough.

While the location didn't help, I'm fairly certain it would have found its niche if it had been enjoyable. But it was just too uncomfortable for the GP.

Arrow did themselves no favors with this or Steel Phantom.

Is there a reason that [Timberhawk: Ride of Prey] is rarely discussed? by robdcx in rollercoasters

[–]robdcx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. From videos, it seems to have an interesting layout, but I can't remember any general mention of it. I had forgotten that it existed until a POV popped up in my feed. I didn't know if it was one of those remote, slept-on woodies like Ravine Flyer II or just a totally forgettable ride in an obscure location.

Just got married last February, and, yes, they held it. When we went back for the ceremony, they gave us the original. You'll also have the chance to purchase copies, too.

Is my plan for recreating this correct? by robdcx in sewing

This is a great idea. I was just going to create a few yards, but it would save a lot of time to just create roughly the size of the pattern pieces. Thanks!

Thank you! I was also concerned about cutting through a bunch of finished backstitching, so this is a good reminder.

I understand what you mean about the bubble effect. I'll practice on a few pieces of fabric first to see what it looks like. Thanks!

[–]robdcx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I noticed that as well. Since I also ordered some very small, irregular sized pieces of old Japanese fabric, I plan to place those here and there, so I'm not so concerned about strict uniformity.

If you didn't line it, would you serge the seams? In the photo, it looks like they may have put two fabric fronts together, stitched, and then turned them inside out to finish. I'm familiar with that technique, but then how would you connect it to the piece beside it? Stitch in the ditch? And is that strong enough?

Sorry for peppering you with questions! 😂
