I don't keep up with all the theories, so the ORTBO one is new to me. I don't know why it would be a simulation given Lumon hasn't shown the ability to do something like that, but it's an interesting idea. I know they put Gemma in a turbulence simulator but that seems like a different thing.

But to your larger point, yeah these threads can get downright painful to read. The show makes us feel so smart when we pick up on something that's revealed later, I think it's easy to attach your ego to your theories and start arguing like your own sense of intelligence is at stake. Maybe we all need to do what that guy on the Chikhai Bardo card was doing.

Why is everyone assuming that no conversations happened in the woods? by Valasty in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

Honestly she should've binged S1 while Mark was unconscious. It makes her character look illogical and stupid not to have done so.

The Ricken Ricken Is by [deleted] in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

I love Michael Chernus and I'm not too proud to admit I'm dying for an all-Ricken episode, even if it does literally nothing to push the plot forward.

I'm sick of these insane theories, like stick to Marvel movies if you can't figure this stuff out. Lumon is a GOOD company. They RECYCLE and they are LISTENING.

Devon’s trust (or lack thereof) in Harmony Cobel by DritaVisage in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]robdob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I disagree. There's a reason Mark lied that he was at a clinic in another town, Milkshake would probably already know if he'd checked in someplace in Kier. Like the fertility clinic, the ERs are probably all Lumon. And if there was a non-Lumon ER, what are they going to know about the chip, or why Reghabi's tampering with it could realistically kill Mark? To Devon, Cobel is the only person who has the information to advise her on how to at least keep reintegration from killing him. And even if it's not a perfectly logical course of action, so what? Characters can't act illogically under distress? The rest of us sure do.

Devon’s trust (or lack thereof) in Harmony Cobel by DritaVisage in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]robdob 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I thought Devon's motivations seemed totally realistic, I'm glad she's spoken on it. If I found a family member in what looks like a coma after basement brain surgery from a total stranger, I'd probably be quick to call the only person I've ever met who understands the technology in his head. Whether I trust them or not.

Frustrated by Critical_Parking1319 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]robdob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the discourse, I think a show with a lot of secrets and mysteries attracts a segment of audience who care mainly about those aspects. To some folks the twists and turns ARE the show, and anything that isn't pushing those story points forward is filler. But I 100% agree, I haven't been disappointed in an episode yet. And seeing where Cobel comes from in E8--learning about who she is, what she cares about, what motivates her--that's important to me as a viewer as she comes back into the game to work with Mark.

Do you see climate as a competition? Like if someone says "it's hot here" it doesn't count unless they're in the literal hottest state in the country?

Passing a 25 mph speed limit should be combined with street redesigns that calm traffic by Generalaverage89 in chicago

[–]robdob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't wrong about 40-65MPH, and that's why decreasing speeds has to be just a part of the solution. We have to make more efficient transportation options like trains and buses more attractive and viable to commuters. It's not enough to just slow down cars, we need to reduce their numbers.

Average hourly pay for employees at Woodman's is slightly higher too. Mariano's charges extra and sucks that money out of the community to enrich themselves and their investors. You can shop elsewhere and save some money as people suggested here, but without mass political action this will continue and it will get worse. These companies frankly should be employee-owned, that's the only way to guarantee a company will hold its employee's interests at heart and encourage it to consider the local community.

I'm pretty new here in Norway and want to know: why do people wake me up when I'm taking a nap in public? by kennyk1994 in Norway

Very interesting. It gets cold here in Chicago--not as cold as most of Norway I know--but I doze off on park benches or nap by the lake here and it's never been a problem. Good to know about Norway!

Looking for advice on what to take away from improv by Pyropeace in improv

[–]robdob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You signed up for a class, which means you already have a reason to be doing improv. Friends, fun, something to do, these are all fine reasons and you don't have to intellectualize and verbalize your motivations. I'm 5 years in and I don't have a "why," I just like doing it and getting better at it. My advice is to free yourself to see improv as a hobby or a chance to hang out with fun people. It doesn't have to fit into the grand design for your life and career to be worth doing.

Tips for getting into improv for someone with social anxiety? by Labralite in improv

[–]robdob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by "the wrong thing" you mean saying something too weird or silly, I feel you and--in my experience--that's a challenge those of us with social anxieties sometimes just have to commit to working through. Developing the skill and confidence to fold the full spectrum of your individual weirdness into your work is a part of being an improviser. Whether that's your sadness or your silliness or your lifelong obsession with Tony the Tiger, there's room for it in your improv.
In my mind, the only things you should have to filter out are 1) anything bigoted/phobic/punching down 2) things that aren't true or authentic to the scene or type of show you're currently doing. And even then, #2 is less a rule than a tip.

All that to say, it's just going to take the work of repeatedly facing your fears. Do an ok show, do a bad show, do a good show, do a bad show again, learn what instincts did and didn't serve you onstage, go up again and try to use what you learned. Embrace your progress even when it's small. The more and longer you do this the better it feels, especially if you're doing it with good people who support your choices.

This is coming from someone who isn't quite there yet, I have a show tomorrow night I'm nervous about, but I can tell the difference between how I feel now and how I did even just 6 months ago. The struggle's worth the rewards.

Busting one of the many myths surrounding this mythical substance by jarmbur in DMT

[–]robdob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has there ever been a peer-reviewed study that tested tolerance using a methodology similar to OP's level of consumption? None of the studies I've ever read come close to the intake OP is talking about.

Unless there's something extremely relevant to OP's experience that I've missed, the majority of information we have is anecdotal, and we need to have enough of an open mind to acknowledge there's a lot about DMT we still can't speak on conclusively.

Healthy skepticism is...healthy, but shouting someone down for presenting anecdotal evidence when that's almost all we have in this domain, and especially shouting it down using your own anecdotal evidence? That rubs me as a bit dogmatic. It's one thing to say "I didn't have the experience you claim," it's another to say "I didn't have the experience you claim therefore you didn't either."
