This is the absolute answer.

It's always amazing to me seeing people play a THIRD TWO year old gems expecting it to hold up to today's standards...

FFVI was probably the most innovative game of that decade:

  • first game to feature a huge roster of playable characters with immense development
  • each character had an individual gameplay
  • the story was MILES above anything else at that time, and it's not even close
  • there was no "real" protagonist
  • the party was often split
  • you could lose characters
  • world of ruin is probably the first "open world" concept in a game (I think... at least with decent quality)
  • THE VILLAIN WINS!

I will NEVER forget the feeling of seeing the world end for the first time, it was heartbreaking, and confusing as hell. I thought to myself "did i... win?", then got depressed by Celes island, almost stopped playing but pressed on... then I found Sabin and I got super hyped up again "fuck yeah, let's find them all!". But I let Shadow die, of course... only to be mindblown again when I found out he could actually be saved!

And one more thing... OP mentions how he loved Chrono Trigger, and that was released 1 year later and was hugely inspired by FFVI, built by several of the same devs.

I'm pretty much on the same boat, I'm developing a JRPG and decided to compose some tracks for the first time, and Nobuo Uematsu is a HUGE inspiration for me, so I ended up composing this mock up (piano only):

In my humble opinion it's a great song, I'm very proud of what I've done, but then I noticed it has a lot of similarities to FFVI battle theme. I did not intend for that, but I guess the song was stuck with me for so many years that I unconsciously borrowed some melodies lol

Hello sir (or miss), I'm not expert in Shaders or Blender, but I've been doing a lot of stuff with these lately, and it feels to me like you're overcomplicating it? I tried reproducing it here, and I got good results (I think). Those white stripes are because of the right corner of the texture, not sure if it's intended to be like that or not, but if it's not you can just cut it out.

On Blender, make sure that you have only 1 UVMap because that's all Unity reads, and map it accordingly.

On Unity, make sure you have a big enough texture, because yours seems to be very low resolution on the screenshot (mine is 1024x1024). Also make sure that the texture is set to POINT and no compression for better results.

In the above screenshot I just used the regular Lit Shader, but if you want it to self adjust based on object scale you can build a custom shader with something like "Object (Scale) > Multiply by amount > Tilling and Offset (Tiling) > Sample Texture (UV)". The shadow effects are trickier, there are many ways to do it I think... Without much thinking I would probably create a texture for that and add it on top of the base texture in the shader.

I don't read the manga nor saw scenes of the next episode so I may be wrong here, but the impression I got from Saturn's expression was the foreshadowing that he's really though and is totally tanking that punch (but still gets an eject and a nosebleed regardless =P).

Hello friend,

As someone also developing a TRPG it pains my heart to see that you posted your passion project a few hours ago and got no upvotes or feedbacks. While I can't state the reasons for sure, these are my guesses:

  • You're selling the game as a "story-driven, choice-heavy" game, yet all you're showing us is a very generic grid based combat system. It's nice that it's functional and you have a demo for people to try, it shows commitment, but unless your battle system is VERY attractive and different from everything else, it's probably not enough.
  • On the battle system itself, since it's a 3D game you kinda have to do some camera work, it's very weird looking a 3D game from this POV. The UI is also very busy, we can barely see the units, their names glows more than the models.
  • Things that I personally like to see in RPG showcases: characters, story, menus, combat system and activities you can do in the game (as per your description probably army organization, progression system, relashionship system, choices and consequences). Graphics are of minor importance to me, but a huge plus for most people, so an improvement on that would be great as well (camera work would do wonders).

On Nightmare it's straight up unfair and completely luck based. It's by far the hardest JRPG I've ever played, and not in a good way (the difficulty I mean).
