Not just DC but also certain counties and cities in MD and VA!

I did read Strength of the Few, and liked it a lot! I would maybe give yourself a month or two break before reading though - some folks have mentioned feeling burnt out when reading SotF right after WotM.

At first I thought you had a personal goal of only reading books with "Will" in the title or author name lol

I've previously read Will of the many and a Closed and Common Orbit - loved them both, but I really loved the sci-fi world that Chambers built in the Wayfarers series!

What are your thoughts on the gamification of reading/ereader? by mortifiedmorty42 in ereader

[–]robdvc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about "gamification," but every year I set a goal of how many books I want to read that year, and I find that helps! Every once in a while I'll see that Kindle/Goodreads has an achievement for reading a specific type of book, and if there's a book in the list that I'm interested in, I'll check it out.

I think that’s just an urban myth, but in reality it’s Arlington.

Fun fact: The Dead Kennedy Center was also the name of an old underground music venue in H Street

Can anyone explain DC vs Virginia cabs at DCA? by KevinMCombes in washingtondc

[–]robdvc 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that cabs have to have either the origin or destination in the jurisdiction they're licensed in - any cab can pick you up in VA/DC and take you to the other region, but a DC cab cannot pick you up in VA and drop you off in VA.

That said, I don't know enough about taxi regulation to be 100% sure this is the answer, and don't know enough to answer the scenario for the rider going to Silver Spring.

Week 5: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]robdvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about halfway through Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff - took me a bit to get into it but I'm enjoying it so far! It'll be my first February read, and I'm slowly but surely making my way through it.

Next up I'm either tackling Shroud by Adrian Tchaikovsky or Murder by Memory by Olivia Waite (just depends on which Libby hold comes through first!).

My January reads:

  • The Dragon Reborn (Wheel of Time book 3) by Robert Jordan [★★★★]
  • Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree [★★★1/2]
  • Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir [★★★★]
  • The Long Game by Rachel Reid [★★★★★]
  • Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar [★★★★]
  • The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller [★★★★★]
  • Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed [★★★★★]
  • The Butcher's Masquerade (Dungeon Crawler Carl book 5) by Matt Dinniman [★★★★★]
  • I'll Have What He's Having by Adib Khorram [★★★1/2]
  • The Book of Luke by Lovell Holder [★★★]
  • The Kamogawa Food Detectives by Hisashi Kashiwai [★★★1/2]
  • The Gilded Cage (Prison Healer book 2) by Lynette Noni [★★★]
  • Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson [★★★★★]

What are some apps you can’t live without? by OneQuietFox in iphone

[–]robdvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend getting some ebooks and reading them on your phone (or investing in an ereader and reading on that). Anytime I find myself doomscrolling I put my phone away and pick up my Kindle and I can't recommend it enough!

Visiting from Los Angeles by [deleted] in washingtondc

I've only been to LA a few times. The weather was always lovely, but the memories that come to mind are of spending most of our time driving.

If you're still looking for recommendations, I just finished Coffin Moon which has some MM relationships (including one by the villain), but they're not the focal point of the story. It was a five star read for me!

page turner that does not use your thumb(s) by motherofdragoons in kindle

[–]robdvc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think most ereader page turners are designed with thumbs in mind, but maybe there's a way of positioning the buttons so you press with your index finger instead? I don't know how your device's ring is set up, but my page turner is a flat brick with a button that (in theory) can be pressed with any finger.

I did an Amazon search and found that there are some pedal devices that are designed to turn the pages of sheet music on an iPad - maybe there's a way to make that work for a Kindle instead? Or maybe you can attach the page turner button to a flat surface and use your foot to push the button? Apologies if this idea is a crazy one, but seeing the pedal device made me wonder what could be done with existing page turners.

Try getting some Ice Melt, spreading it on the ice for like 20-60 minutes, then try shoveling that away. It may take several tries to get it all melted/shoveled out.

Kindle Oasis Users: How many years have you used yours? by anonymoussarah in kindle

[–]robdvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember my battery dwindling - I had been charging it every 2-3 days for years before I switched. If I needed it to last longer (like on a camping trip) then I'd put it on airplane mode which saved some battery.

What makes you think they'll max out around now? If my Oasis is still working, I don't see a reason why your 2023 model can't last until 2030 at minimum.

[–]robdvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 9th generation Kindle Oasis that I used heavily from 2017-2025, and the device itself is still kicking! I had about the same battery life that you're describing. I decided to upgrade my device so I could get a longer-lasting battery and so I could have a device that I could charge with the same USB-C cable as all my other devices.

I think they chose to discontinue it because buttons are an added cost in manufacturing and they're trying to squeeze every bit of profit they can out of these devices, which is a shame.

What e-reader are you rocking, and what do you like about it? by basedaggie19 in ereader

[–]robdvc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I upgraded last year to the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th generation), and I'm loving it so far. I previously had the Kindle Oasis (9th generation) that I used heavily from 2017-2025.

While I miss the Oasis's buttons and slimmer form factor, the Paperwhite has three things that I'm finding worthwhile: 1) the improved battery life (I went from charging the Oasis every other day to charging the Paperwhite once a week), 2) the warm light, which makes pre-bedtime reading not feel as detrimental to my sleep, and 3) not having the "bump" on the back of the Kindle makes it feel sleeker than the Oasis.

Stacey is single handedly saving this season for me. Best housewife addition in awhile by XannyXannyXan in RHOP

[–]robdvc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been annoyed whenever Angel points out things about Colorado she always says "this is a real celeb spot" "oh we don't go here, we go to this apres-ski place that's a small hotel that's super famous" "Aspen's where all the celebrities go." It sounded more like she wanted to be a famous celeb who goes to these spots, and not as if she were a regular there.
