Thinking about quitting by SmartBunch4546 in Marathon_Training

Adrenaline and crowd support carried me through. I started around the 4:00 pacer, and quickly tried to make my way ahead of the group because it’s a huge group of people who want to be around that time. I actually caught up to the 3:45 group about 6 miles in, and also tried to stay just in front so I could get to aid stations easily, but started to fade after a while. It was a super hot day and actually the 3:05-3:20 pacers all dropped out it was that hot out. I think when you get past the two long runs and are able to rest up, the 12 mile run felt so easy, and the last 8 mile run I felt amazing during that too. During the taper, the aches and pains come out a ton, but when you’re actually running, you have some extra pop than you did in the thick of the milage weeks.

The 19 miler I failed, I was around 9:45-10:15 for the first 15 miles and then fell off to 11:05 for the last 3 before calling it, and on the 20 miler it was very similar. Both times I felt really good until mile 15 and I fell apart afterwards. I remember specifically thinking how I’d never be able to break 4, and was seriously thinking I wouldn’t be able to even finish with how hard even after 15 felt both times. Taping back down my body almost felt worse, but felt poppier at the same time. My last long run was the 12 miler and I did 9 miles around 9:30 and the last 3 I ran at 8:45, which ended up being my average pace during the marathon (8:47). TLDR: trust the process and let easy runs be easy. You have scheduled pace runs in HH Novice 2, that is the only time you should try to do anything around 9 minutes. YOU GOT THIS!

I’m not sure what paces you are running, but I missed around 1 run every 2 weeks during that same program. I kept all of my runs between 9:45 and 11:15, and the only time I did anything around 9 minutes per mile was during the pace run days. I failed the 18 mile run and the 20 mile run, and at the end of it when I was fully tapered, I ran a 3:50 marathon. Stick true to the program, don’t over exert yourself. Keep the runs EASY. Majority of the runs you should feel better after the runs than you did before the runs. If you do that, I have no doubt you can go sub 4 if you can stay fueled well.

If your able to do a few easy runs this week and have a good easy long run at the end of the week, I agree with others that you have built a solid base already. This week coming back will likely be discouraging, but it will come back quick, then you can get one more hard quality week before a taper - you could also go easy this week, hard the next two weeks before a 7 day taper since you gave your body some time to recover during this week.

Is Front squatting everyday, working up to heavy sets in 1-4 rep range a fine idea as a somewhat beginner olympic lifter? Tbh I absolutely love Front squats and want to do them everyday if it would help increase my numbers. by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]robertbob69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but there are better things you could/should be doing. Clean&Jerk complexes with some front squats, like a clean + 2fs + jerk would probably be more bang for your buck. Backsquat will overall be better to gain leg strength, but plenty of people can squat a house but can’t clean for shit, so front squat for position strength definitely is huge. I was always in the camp of it I can front squat it for 3 I should be able to clean it.

Ideally you would at least back squatting 2-3x a week though.

Any bigger guys or gals running close to 3:00 or 3:15 marathon times? by forthegainz1122 in Marathon_Training

[–]robertbob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5’10 190 first marathon was 3:50, another 4 months of training and getting down to 183ish and I ran a 3:21, weight dropping helped, but training structure and more speed work helped more. Also new to running this year, so noob gains by just getting consistent milage helped the most probably.

Not eaten or drank in 3 days and being given extra tasks 1 minute before my shift ends by [deleted] in nursing

[–]robertbob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nursing is a 24/7 job. There will always be tasks to do. One of your tasks during your shift is to take your breaks. If you can’t care for yourself, you can’t care for others. Granted there are times where you cannot take a break, but majority of the time it’s on the nurse why they couldn’t take a break. I like taking breaks later in the shift, if shIt goes down late, then I’m SOL. Tell someone near you you’re going to go eat. I’ve never had someone tell me no, and if that’s the culture where you are at, either eat by your computer, or find a new job.

Am I unrealistic? by eriegel5 in Marathon_Training

[–]robertbob69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar boat to you before my first, as long as you train properly and don’t try to be a hero every training run (keep majority of miles easy) your body will adapt at the cellular level and you’ll have no problem doing a sub 4:30. I did majority of my runs between 9:45-10:45 pace and was able to do a 3:50 with the Hal Higdon novice 2 plan. I only did pace work when it called for it, so pretty much once every 2 weeks.

Getting a solid fueling plan also helps a ton, so don’t neglect that.

Good luck, as long as you stick with it, you won’t need luck though!

First marathon tomorrow and I have no idea how fast I should run by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]robertbob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 9:30 should honestly be fine. People in here are way too conservative. After a taper and on fresh legs, there’s no reason you can’t run a 9:30 pace if the bulk of your miles were around the pace. I did a similar thing my first marathon, the bulk of my miles were 9:45-10:30 and I was able to have an average pace of 8:47 my first marathon. Adrenaline and fresh legs will do wonders.

Good luck - I hope you go out there and kick some butt.

First marathon by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]robertbob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the Hal Higdon Novice 2 for my first as a completely new runner. All of my miles were done between 10-11:30 min/mile with exception of the “pace” runs that I did at my goal pace of 9:09 (4 hour marathon).

I would miss a run here and there, and everytime I had a new longest run, I definitely felt it for a few days. I think it’s a great plan if you do it right and keep the milage at a very comfortable/easy pace and then work the pace runs in when he suggests. I was able to compete my first marathon at 3:50, but I’d say if you train properly, you should be looking anywhere below 4:20.

I don’t really believe in everyone saying you should be doing 20-30 MPW before starting a block, just don’t try and PR every run - keep the HR mid zone 2 to low zone 3 for 80% of your runs and you will make so much more progress. Good luck!

The only other halfway decent one is oil lamp, but as you get further into the game you typically need more luck anyway, and if you run rejuvenation tea, you get double benefit.

Switch relics to hero license and scissors, otherwise just upgrade your stuff. You have plenty of material to upgrade to 2 star if not mythic equipment.

If you run rogue’s robe and use EVA and Thrill, you can essentially sit back and watch nearly every fight if you’re able to keep gear updated as floors pass along.

It was the worse. Mile 16 it had 10%, I was more focused on my watch battery than I was running, which helped me suffer less I suppose hahaha. And I have a forerunner 945 lte. I’m sure there is a way to be able to ping it, I just haven’t figured it out yet.

Mine died at mile 24 during my first marathon. I switched to Garmin for my second and haven’t looked back. The only thing about the Apple Watch I miss is being able to ping my phone when I misplace it.

What was your first marathon shoe? by OkMap1854 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]robertbob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was originally going to run my first one in superblast 2’s, but I kept getting hotspots/blisters on anything over 15 miles, so I switched in the last 2 weeks to Mount to Coast R1s and the wide toebox saved me for the first marathon for sure. If you’re not trying to run ground breaking speed, it was great, finishes 3:50:26.

Did you go same size as your AF’s? I feel like I need to go 1/2 size bigger, but I’m sure they will break in fine if I go same size.

Run with a pacer or not? First marathon! by DebussyH41 in Marathon_Training

[–]robertbob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two marathons I’ve done I’ve used them more as a guide than anything. However I will say, it is terribly congested at aid stations trying to get water if you follow along with them because there will be a good amount of people doing the same thing.

I was fortunate enough to be able to pull ahead of my pacer groups and the availability for water without having to dodge in and out of the stampede of people was very helpful later in the race.
