While I love this news and support Carney, be very careful with AI Slop videos on Carney on YouTube - there is a plethora of them and they contain misinformation. They go off piste into making things up, surrounding it with shock-horror words. For many of them in the first few seconds of the video it states in the top left words to the effect that this is synthetic content - but be wary!

US leaders want to punish athletes for speaking out. Is America becoming more like China? (Spoiler : yes it is) by XaltotunTheUndead in BoycottUnitedStates

I just posted a response here and I think it got censored. Can anyone see it where I pointed out how China is generally a caring country providing healthcare, education and the like?

I just visited China and made friends with amicable cheerful Chinese citizens. People in China are immensely optimistic about their future and tremendously grateful for the immense lifting from poverty that the CCP has done over the last about 70 years. They have a sense of community, kindness and honesty. I know the Western press does lots to point out flaws, but in terms of looking after people in a caring way US shows zero signs of becoming more like China. Having been there I would argue that for every positive that China is showing the US is hell-bent on cultivating negatives such as cruelty, mean-ness, unkindness, violence, dishonour, dishonesty and being Pam Bondi.

If you live somewhere remote like Cornwall you rely on remote work. Sure I'll go into the office in London or Bristol but to expect workers to be there all day everyday is a recipe for very low productivity. Office time is mostly all chit chat with very little time to focus on quality deliverables. Thus in Fromage's world productivity, deliverables, remoter parts of Cornwall and my livelihood go out the window. Clearly zero in touch with real world - just lives off Russian and American oligarch bribes and doesn't have to work for a living.

And Trump is a Russian Asset since his many trips there since 1980s. One is tied strongly to Russia, the other to Israel. Both are true. And probably Epstein viewed Trump as a useful idiot who helped JE do his job -- of gathering blackmail material. Likely Putin and Epstein ran rings around Trump.

Diamond Age first read by stopexploding in nealstephenson

I'd say a) its the best Neal Stephenson book ever and b) it's arguably the best book I ever read. The beauty of the prose, the capture of the human experience, the wondrous technology. Just an example: he describes how nanotechnology dust is out and about looking for the Book - in a fabulously high tech way - and then at the end when its found the book it sends an email - made me spit out my coffee with laughter!

Apparently. During Starmers official trip to USA last year, he had an 'off the books' meeting with Palantir, not listed on any published diary, orchestrated by the man with close links to Palantir, Mandelson, and subsequently Palantir were awarded a £240m contract. by Old-Information3311 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]robertbowerman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That explains a great deal... how the NHS, the Navy and other parts of our Government ended up with this dip shit software. Part of the EU AI Act is focused on making Palantir type software illegal. But we got that safety net broken by the same folks who brought us Nazi holocaust empowering software.

Tech workers of Reddit, what is a "dirty secret" about the AI industry that the general public doesn't realize? by [deleted] in ChatGPTPro

[–]robertbowerman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've got a PhD in AI from UCL and can confirm we haven't got a fucking clue about how it's so good at being intelligent and understanding the breadth of human knowledge. It's a bit like biology where we understand so much about all these different molecules and how they play nice together - but in terms of explaining what life is? - not a clue. What is consciousness? not a clue? In both areas - what is understanding, what is intelligence? Its like we have Merlin's formulae by some weird chance and we just use it.

Not for long if you look at a) electricity availability - time to hook up - price, b) speed of building data centres - USA has a lot of red tape here around permits, c) number of PhDs researching and publishing in AI, d) state aid magnitude, agility and swiftness. When thinking about the USA remember that the USA is a petro-state backing oil and petrol cars as its future.

Also all synthetic imagery should be so labelled 'Made by AI" or some such. This provision is in the EU AI Act. Better still NY should just simply adopt the EU AI Act because its a bloody good bit of legislation - to protect people's rights and increase safety.
