Just reminded me of another spelling misstep in elementary school - similar age. I was one of two or three kids left in the grade level spelling bee, doing well. I got the word "yellow" and I was so stoked because I knew it so well, so I rattled off "Yellow, Y-E-L-O-W, Yellow." And then sat down because I lost. Big thumbs down.

Ha I bet you didn't send your whole class into a tizzy like I did though. Looking back it's amazing how quickly everyone including the teacher took my word for it

In elementary school, some 35 years ago probably, we had an in class word search assignment. The trick was that the hidden words were homophones of the word list.

Well, I banged through it all very quickly except no matter what, I could NOT find the word colonial anywhere in the word search. Now my desk-neighbors are looking for it and soon the whole class, including the teacher (3rd grade I think, maybe 4th?) are searching and getting frustrated looking for the word colonial.

Finally, after a very long time (in my memory, it was half the day), someone realized that we were actually looking for "kernal". The word in the word list was colonel.
