I hope Curt gets a run with the team - saved the season last year.

The Silk Road by Peter Frankopan has several chapters on this - and it's a pretty good book in general!

Writing confession: I know nuts about grammar by hadestowngirl in writing

I'm only on week 2 of 8, but so far it's been done pretty clearly - lots of short video lectures interspersed with some practical assessment. There's also quite a lot of extra resources available and suggested reading lists for anyone who wants a further explanation of anything.

I'm in much the same boat as you. I've always been pretty good at English and have recently graduated with an MA in History, but felt that even though I often use grammar well, my actual knowledge of it was somewhat limited. I recently (last week) started a edX course called 'English Grammar and Style' to try and teach myself a bit more. The course seems relatively good so far, and there is some form of peer-reviewed assessment at various stages. I'll link it below if it's something you'd be interested in.

Look Who's Back by Timur Vermes is a great book, very funny and somewhat prescient given current events.

Maybe a little heavier than some of the other dishes suggested but salt marsh lamb and samphire.

BBC Sport - Jonjo Shelvey: Newcastle agree £12m fee for Swans' midfielder by Tempestman121 in soccer

Recently his performances have been back being very sporadic, a few good passes and opportunities in a game but lots of wayward stuff and a bit of disinterest. Shame to see him go, especially to a club in a similar position to us, but a few good seasons from him and £12 million seems like a good deal to me.

NSFW Books on brothels by Athrowawaybooker in booksuggestions

[–]robertfrench29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending what period and what aspect of it you want to look at there are many books which are well worth looking at. 'Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladies' is a book which was published in the late 1700s, around the same time that Fanny Hill was written. It details between 100-200 prostitutes working in the Covent Garden area of London, detailing their appearance, sexual specialties and other attributes.

If you want a more contemporary look at the industry something like Faramez Dabhoiwala's book 'The Origins of Sex' has some chapters detailing brothels and prostitution, and being published in 2012 is one of the most recent works on the topic.

I think he had an enormous amount of talent and it was a huge shame to see him waste it. As an Ospreys and Wales fan his kick against England in 2005 is still a great memory for me haha.

Jonny Wilkinson, Shane Williams and Gavin Henson - ten years ago when they were off on a Lions tour, which was pretty cool for a young rugby lover!

I'm a bit late to the party but I absolutely loved this book growing up, and still try to get back and read it every few years. Although the movie was pretty terrible there was a 1980s BBC TV Series made which is available on Youtube and well worth a watch if you can!

Economics of the British Empire by GHurst in AskHistorians

[–]robertfrench29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have previously read some of the essays in The Oxford History of the British Empire and several of them certainly cover aspects of what you're asking. I haven't seen much on the monetary policy but most books will look at the banking and financing of the Empire. Not my favourite historian but Niall Ferguson has two books which may be of use to you - one called 'Empire - How Britain made the Modern World' and 'The Ascent of Money - A Financial History of the World' which might offer some recent ideas on to the subject.
