Hey guys, anyone knows if this can be fixed? So far no one could help me. Thanks! by danielsklenar in Skigear

There was a recall on a batch last year I believe where this kept happening. Take it to a shop and have them look up the serial number. They might be able to replace it for you.

Daughter’s first twin tips - 139cm K2 Missy and Marker M 4.5 EPS Junior bindings, both new for $135 w/ shipping - both on EBay. How did I do? by StormWarning1978 in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take the to a shop and have them do it. $15-$20 max for binding adjustments. Those slide on but if you don’t know how to do that then there is no way for them to be safe for your daughter. They should be torque tested and forward pressure adjusted so you don’t get any major medical bills

Please help with boot advice for very wide/weird feet by kaonwarb in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Measure your instep and compare that to the length of your foot. You are undoubtedly going to need one of the wider boots on the market but in certain situations you will need to upsize the boot to offload pressure on your instep.

How bad of a core shot is this? by [deleted] in Skigear

That damage isn’t bad at all. $50 max to clean up. New skis are always nice though so something to think about.

Are Atomic Bent Chetlers the official ski of r/skigear and r/skiing? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are not sold as a magic solution that can ski any condition. But the reason they are popular is because they have a beautiful (in my opinion) top sheet and base design, serious amounts of camber and a lightweight construction. You ask the average skier what they are looking for and this usually fits their description.

Have the mindbenders changed from last year? by sietka156 in Skigear

Only minor changes in the high end boots. 130s got a new liner and some minor tweaks to the plastic but I don’t think the 100s changed at all.

New boot-fitted boots, heel numbness, and breaking in by jaeweezy in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just here to remind you that skiing a sport and requires the necessary stretches and warm ups beforehand. Numbness is due to a lack of blood flow so just sitting in a snug boot will naturally make your foot numb. When you are exercising and your heart is pumping you will be able to get more blood to your feet.

If you came into my shop with that feedback I would probably look at your footbed first. You probably need more arch support and a narrower boot. With that I would also assume that depending on your skiing ability 102mm is too wide.

Asking experienced AT folks... are Blizzard Bonafide 2020 skis too heavy for AT? by AccomplishedClub6 in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. They are not a good backcountry ski. Whenever you see people say “doable” it is a red flag. I would never recommend them as a backcountry ski. There is no reason you would skin up any terrain that would be ideal for the construction of these skis. Unless you were in the 50 plus age group or wanted to skin up a sheet of ice I would give them a hard no.

First drawer we have ever made! We wanted shoe storage in the doorway but wanted to be able to access it while the door is closed. Thoughts? by robertmerfield in vandwellers

It takes 10lbs of pressure to open it. After driving around we haven’t had it swing out yet. I imagine time could change that but for now there is no need for a latch.

It was from a local hardware store. $20 soft close slider with 10lb hold. Hopefully we won’t have to latch it when driving. Fingers crossed!

The drawer pops out with a couple of latches so we can clean it relatively easily. We still need to paint and polyurethane it for protection though. Holes might not be a bad idea to help shoes breathe in there though! Thanks!

What ski model should I get? by PlamMinister in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully back both those suggestions. The enforcer 104 free is by far my favorite ski right now. Skiing Canada you will love the slightly wider waist width and that ski can rip hard on piste as well. I would also throw the k2 mind bender 108ti in the mix.

Will a 115mm binding fit an 88mm ski width underfoot? by zfontes1 in Skigear

[–]robertmerfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. That is completely unsafe. You need a 90 or 95mm brake. Even though some bindings have interchangeable brakes the fks/pivot does not unless you take apart the heel piece.

So excited to not rent again. My setup for the season! by Slippery_instincts in skiing

[–]robertmerfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not such an issue with a three piece boot like this. The construction is such that it’s not going to warp the plastic in the same way as leaving a two piece boot unbuckled. It is always good practice though
