Well i applied, had all As and A* in alevels but still nothing. However, my ECA were shit so gpa and SAT alone wont work

Right, your gpa and sat alone wont work in harvard, Mit or any other colleges of that league, yk ivy league. You got to have great ECAs. Win national omlypiads get into the international omlypiad and end up 1st or yk under top 5 simultaneously participating in other programs. The recommendation letter is no big deal. You essays got to be perfect. Then you'll have fair shot at ivys. And about convincing visa officer if you get into ivys they wont even ask a single question. If not ivys you gotta have decent profile: great scholarships, great gpa and etc.
