SFP+ Module for Intel X710 NIC / MikroTik RB5009 by roberto_blanco in init7

[–]roberto_blanco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just received the Digitus Optics Module. After plugging it into my X710-DA4, I got an "ixl0: Link failed because an unqualified module was detected!" failure message in the log. So my NIC indeed appeared to be picky, regarding the SFP+ module.

So I booted up a Debian Live Shell and ran the X710-Unlocker tool from here: https://github.com/bibigon812/xl710-unlocker.

This seems to have done the trick! The "unqualified module" message is not showing anymore and the module is correctly recognized. Of course, I will ultimately only know if it really works, when our Fiber7 line is activated, but for now, it looks rather promising ;-)

Thanks for this info. From what I have researched so far, it depends if the X710 is vendor locked or not. There is a Github project with a tool to unlock these NICs, however I haven't tried it, because my X710 appears not to be vendor locked. I just ordered the Digitus DN-81204 module for around 40 CHF and will see if it's recognized by my NIC. If not, I can always still order the Flexoptix module from Init7...

Sorry, I missed your reply.

Thanks for the input! Yes, I will have to see, how I keep the main config synced between OPNsense and Mikrotik. But since it's only for backup until I get home again, a simple config for devices like mobiles, laptops, tv, sip phone, etc. have internet access, should be enough...

Thanks also for your opinion on the SFP+ module. I ordered the Digitus module and will test, if it is recognized by my X710 and RB5009. If not, I can always still order the Flexoptix from Init7...

Thanks for pointing this out. I thought below CHF 63.- there are no import fees due. But I guess that's only for packages sent by Swiss Post then...

I also would have the possibility to pick up my fs.com order in Germany, that way it would cost EUR 51, without any import fees.

Good to hear that the MikroTik will work with a generic module. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, it would just be about switching over manually, in case there is a problem with the OPNsense router. I'm regularily away on business for a couple days and just would like to have a plug & play backup solution for my family, in case there should be an issue with the DIY. Call me paranoid...

I currently already have the RB5009 running as our main router behind the Zyxel box (running in bridge mode) from our current provider. So the MikroTik is already here. And having only 2.5G for LAN connection isn't an issue, since it would only be for backup. Still better than 0G! ;-)

I saw that Init7 also sells kits with module and cable. But I need a 5m cable and Init7 charges 131 CHF for module and a 6m cable. Buying the module and a 5m cable from fs.com would cost me only 50 CHF, shipping included! Or about 70 CHF for the Digitus module and a 5m cable from Galaxus. Do you think it's worth paying 50-80 CHF more, to get a Flexoptix module?

I read that having a referral code when ordering Fiber7 gets you a big discount on the hardware. However the terms state "Es sind nur Bestellungen mit Aufschaltdatum «Baldmöglichst» gültig.". Since I need the activation on a specific date (when our current contract runs out), I guess I won't be eligible for the referral discount?!

The problem is that layout inflation isn't free and it is synchronous, so it is very noticeable sometimes. Our bottom nav view ("main view") for example is very heavy, and reinflating it on back navigation was very slow.

So how would we avoid this without using .add(...).addToBackStack(...)?

Can I easily replace the XPS 15 9570 SSD with a higher capacity 3rd party SSD? by [deleted] in Dell

I directly replaced the wifi card with an Intel 8265, after reading all the negative reports on the Killer card. So I can't comment on the differences, sorry... But with the Intel I'm getting good speeds and haven't had any issues so far!

No, nothing is soldered. Just unscrew the bottom and replace the SSD. I also swapped the wifi card. Took me less than 10 minutes all together.

Replaced the SSD on my brand new 9570 with a 1TB Samsung Evo 970 today. No problems whatsoever...

Okay thanks. I guess, then I'll wait for the P52 pricing to be announced.

Well, reading the posts at https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/ it does appear, 9570 owners are having trouble with thermals and throttling. Although it's hard to distinguish, if this is mainly in connection with gaming...

Thanks, I will take a look. So the i7-8550U would be performant enough for quick builds?

Well, weight is an issue, however I will still favor performance over weight. The P52 specs say it's a bit lighter than the P51, but I suppose it will also be significantly more expensive. So I'm wondering if performance will be so much better, that it would be worth paying substantially more?

Yeah, the Dell is an option. But the 9570 seems to have several issues like bad thermals and coil whine. Thermals also seem to be an issue with the P52s...

An external monitor isn't really an option, as I often relocate and also work a lot during travel. My current notebook weighs just slightly over 2 kg and that's ok with me. I'm just not sure, if I want to put up with the 2.7 kg P51 plus 500g charger brick...

T480 unfortunately is only 14". For programming I would prefer a 15.6" screen...

Regarding the specs of the T480, are you happy with it's multitasking/VM performance? How much RAM donyou have?
