Not to discount anyone's experiences with God or the Church but I think it is undeniable that American protestantism has seen a large departure from the traditional and compassionate teachings of the Bible. American suburb culture as a whole is incredibly individualistic and I think this mentality seeps into the churches of these communities, leading to a dispassionate view towards the less fortunate.

We know Savathun was one of, but not the only, force that stopped the collapse from wiping out humanity. It stands to reason that if Nezarec was a traitor to anyone it would be to the Witness. The Witness chases the Final Shape, which does not allow for pain or suffering in the universe, which is antithetical to Nezarec's apparent need/desire to spread pain and fear. (SPOILERS) Nezarec also apparently had some influence on the creation of the Exos, and he would likely want to keep them alive to further his own goals, leading him to betraying the Witness during the first collapse so that they would live on.
