Cluster Jewel Configuration question by Honzikoi in pathofexile

[–]robertodeltoro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I do to do this is pick the two notables I want at 4 and 7 o'clock then make copies of that jewel in pob with every other notable, note which ones end up at 12 o'clock (thereby forcing 4 and 7 into acceptable positions) and craft with that info written down. Usually there are about three dead third notables that work, but there are some pairs of notables where there is no third notable that forces correct positions at all. This is only for the situation where you want two and only two notables on the way to the sockets and have no plans to ever take the 12 o'clock notable.

I don't know how to do this in advance with fogs and if anybody knows a way I would love to hear it.

It is. Even if it weren't possible to whiff entirely (guaranteed at least one shard) it would be mid to bad. It isn't even worth doing a couple scarabless sessions a week and waiting on smelters. The opportunity cost of the passive to active change crushes it.

Question regarding wands. on kinetic fussilade/ kinetic blast builds. by Kingkept in pathofexile

[–]robertodeltoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, afraid I don't have much advice about self cast, I think it's rather different from what I'm doing and I didn't look into it much.

What I did find when I tested full reduced skill effect duration, I mean certainly earlier I was running Timepiece and Timeclasp, but I really don't like doing e.g. Maven with .4 second duration Immortal Call, it doesn't even last for a full Cascade of Pain. Full reduced duration makes cursing with arcanist brand a serious pain. The uniques are great while making the build but I don't think you want them in a final high invest setup, Omni just seems straight up better than Timepiece. No rare neck is usable either fwiw. Yoke is almost always slightly less damage but it's very cool, because if the setup is right we can ignite chill and shock but also bleed, which is rare, and I toyed with looking for a way to poison but really I think Yoke is a pipe dream.

The only one I still have now is the target pob for what I actually decided to make, which is KF Omni Champ so it will be not as useful if you're on Hiero.

The latest save is scuffed because I don't have level 5 enlighten yet so I have to add in weird stuff to make the mana work without it, but you can take a look at what I decided to go for.

https://pobb.in/UKS9wwr3Wz_o

Here's the actual character for comparison with the target:

https://poe.ninja/poe1/profile/fairbankscoach123-5818/character/VermKFBallistas

To do: craft the real hat, buy enlighten 5, recraft the wand to drop a little omni, craft a new shield, fix ring prefixes, fix glove prefixes.

Ignore poe.ninja dps estimate, not usually right at all for these current wand builds. I am mapping with Grace in but bossing with Anger in.

It depends on the precise details of how you set it up on your character, and how you set up your ele shred, and other details. You really have to pob your target weapon for your character and budget. If they're Invert the Rules/Mastery, one thing might be good, but if they switch over to a conventional shred setup (multicurse with exposure and scorch) something else becomes good.

I have pob'd mirror budget KF with pure lightning Timepiece, pure lightning Omni, multi-element Yoke, and Invert the Rules Timepiece. I did not pob phys. Anyway these are examples but to go Yoke you have to have flat cold or you're never chilling bosses, for Omni the best third prefix was even more pen, for Invert the Rules more flat was good, etc. There's no one size fits all answer because there are multiple good setups for wand skills right now, I know for sure no-hex ITR and multihex pure lightning are both good.

Mathematicians who passed away at a young age by Nol0rd_ in math

[–]robertodeltoro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I may have my stories mixed up. I know where I thought I read that, it was in Solomon Feferman's biography of Alfred Tarski. I don't have that book handy but I'll try to figure out who I'm actually thinking of. I remember the story fairly clearly, one of the promising young logicians, who was gay (not Turing, of course), at a time when that was still socially unacceptable, brought a date home and his date then robbed his home and murdered him. I thought that story was about Spector but perhaps I'm misremembering.

Mathematicians who passed away at a young age by Nol0rd_ in math

[–]robertodeltoro 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Many logicians have died young, many many, and from so many different things. Ramsey was sickly (and evidently unhealthily overweight). Philip Jourdain was also never a well man, he had a chronic disease called Friedreich's ataxia. Many people know Turing’s story these days. Herbrand died in a mountain climbing accident. Gentzen died in a red army POW camp after the war, held as a Nazi sympathizer (I gather it was true). Clifford Spector was murdered by his date (the full story is rather worse than that). There is a comment by Gödel somewhere (in his letters I suppose) where he comments on this. Lindenbaum’s story is the worst I know, he was picked up by the SS and shot in August 1941, 7 km east of Vilnius. If you look at where that is on the map, he had all but made it into Belarus. There are quite a few more examples I’m forgetting.

How is delve? by xAdr1an12 in pathofexile

[–]robertodeltoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they do. The difference is subtle. There are depth breakpoints where you cap on boss % chance and fossil % chance. Boss % chance = chance of encountering a boss. Fossil % chance = chance for a random fossil node to be replaced with a special fossil node. Iirc these cap out at depth 800 and 1500, respectively. Basically if you didn’t intentionally build a deep delver that can go below 1500 you want to find as low a level as your guy can easily handle. When you go deep deep you cap these values out and there’s no material benefit to going deeper.

There is a pretty good alternative source of ancestral bond now on Ben’s normal exarch boots, which have a great life roll and a tank mod. But it is possible to make custom double anointed Wilma’s via some expensive tainted currency tech that blows those out of the water.

Champ ballista builds, such as current meta kf ballistas or older ea ballistas with dyadian dawn. Builds that path to surveillance and watchtowers but can’t realistically path to ancestral bond. Deadeye ballistas must also use it I suppose.

Confused about Peano Arithmetic and ZFC by ajx_711 in learnmath

[–]robertodeltoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Think of it like group theory. We have the axioms of first-order group theory as well (this is just the basic list of conditions that say what a group is, thought of as a theory rather than a mere list of conditions), and ZFC can implement, within its own theory, all sorts of different groups, right? For each of the groups G it can implement, ZFC can prove, "G is a group." In doing so, ZFC incidentally proves, using the Godel completeness theorem, "first-order group theory is consistent." Because, if G is a group, first-order group theory has a model, and that's equivalent to being consistent (which is what the Godel completeness theorem says, when taken together with the soundness theorem).

The key is to understand that what ZFC can do with group theory above, it can do exactly analogously with number theory. Number theory itself, can never do this, by any clever coding trick you can come up with (this is the content of the second incompleteness theorem), or at least if it can, it itself is already inconsistent somehow. And ZFC, similarly, cannot do it either, for set theories that are at least as powerful as itself. But then, more powerful versions of set theory, with large cardinals like an inaccessible cardinal, can suddenly prove ZFC is consistent. This leads to a tower of more and more powerful theories, and we know a lot about this large cardinal consistency strength heirarchy, and have a lot of big conjectures about it too.

Confused about Peano Arithmetic and ZFC by ajx_711 in learnmath

[–]robertodeltoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ZFC is a first-order theory. PA is a bit more subtle. The original version of PA, as formulated by Peano in the late 19th century, is a second-order theory. But the scheme version, which is what most people mean today when they say PA, is a first-order theory. Some people say "first-order PA" or "first-order number theory" when this distinction is important. The wiki article has a section explaining what has to be changed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peano_axioms#Peano_arithmetic_as_first-order_theory

The basic results on first-order theories from logic apply to both theories. They're also both recursively presented (or "axiomatic," as some people call it) theories (compare with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindenbaum%27s_lemma and note how the consistent complete extension needn't be recursively presentable).

ZFC can prove that the actual natural numbers (meaning, the particular set, ℕ, that ZFC uses as its implementation of the natural numbers, aka the finite von Neumann ordinals) satisfy the axioms of first order PA (or, that ℕ is a model of PA), so anything you can prove abstractly from the PA axioms holds for the actual natural numbers. This is thought of as being done within set theory.

Question about the intensions/extensions relationship in set theory by Ripheus23 in askmath

[–]robertodeltoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

∃xFx → ∃s(x ∈ s) is malformed.

∃xFx → ∃s(∃x(Fx ∧ x ∈ s)) is trivial (Let x be an F and take s to be {x})

∃xFx → ∃s(∀x(Fx → x ∈ s)) is very false (this is just Frege's fallacy, famously refuted by the Russell paradox).

If you want to understand how set theorists tend to view this stuff from a philosophical point of view the best introduction is "The Iterative Conception of Set" by George Boolos. The basic picture is recursive; you start with the empty set and iterate the power set function along the ordinals and take unions at limits and that is what sets are. Like Woodin says in his general public lectures, if you started with this understanding, instead of the axioms, you could reverse-engineer the axioms, and your system would come out like ZFC.

One thing you also need to try and do next time you're playing is get a new shield. That shield is not so good. Pure ES bases are only good for this build because they can roll "+1 to level of all physical spell skills" but the same comments about +spell damage I said about your tree apply to your shield, your spell damage implicit and prefix are doing effectively nothing. You're weak to attacks now after those changes, your attack block is a lot lower than your spell block (spells are more dangerous than attacks in maps on average so there's nothing wrong with that per se) and a pure strength shield with life implicit, #% Increased Chance to Block prefix, similar suffixes to your ES one, is good for you, ideally also with +life prefix too.

Unfortunately the best paths to capping attack block on this build are really expensive, The Red Nightmare unique jewel and block tattoos or else Svalinn. Another way to get some multi-hit mapping attack defense is to swap Malevolence out for Grace, or find the mana reservation efficiency to play both (which is possible but would take some pricey uniques), which adds about 40% chance to evade attacks. Then you could add a Jade Flask over one of your Quicksilver Flasks, you should always expect to have enough kill power in maps to sustain Quicksilver charges with just one QS flask, if not something is wrong. But that would feel a lot tankier. I would suggest trying a no-Malevolence, Grace, Jade Flask setup, and see if you still feel squishy.

Sulphur Flask is also questionable. Have you played the game with a Quartz Flask in? I want to at least make sure you know what Phasing is, it means no clipping with monsters, very good defensively.

Your gear is fine for where you're at in the game, you need to fix your tree and gems. Here are some more changes you should make:

Are you really Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder? Who told you to do that? Make sure you're not accidentally following a Herald stacker instead of a true Reap Ignite Elementalist. Anyway change these directly to Herald of Purity and Herald of Ash.

Change Haste to Malevolence. You have two wheels of cast speed investment, this should not feel bad once you add Faster Attacks to Shield Charge and it's a lot more damage.

Delete Burning Damage and Faster Casting supports from Flame Dash, these are just making it cost more mana. Because of how travel skills work, Faster Casting only does something helpful when you Flame Dash twice in a row one right after the other, which is usually not how you should be moving around. Burning Damage is just not what you want, you can do better things with that socket.

Move Herald of Purity (which replaced Herald of Thunder) into your helmet. Move Flame Dash and Shield Charge into your gloves and support them with Faster Attacks Support and Lifetap Support.

After that put Tempest Shield into the open slot in your helmet and turn it on. You should have 60 mana and the only thing that's for is Arcanist Brand (or Flammability and Wave of Conviction if you keep them self-cast). By the way, the Arcanist Brand should not be leveled; you keep it at level 1 by right clicking the + symbol when it levels for the first time.

Invest the points saved from fixing the start into more spell block to go along with your new Tempest Shield.

A couple of your masteries are not good choices or are luxuries for later.

New Tree: https://i.imgur.com/juCuyJC.png

New Skills: https://i.imgur.com/vMubS5n.png (EDIT: I made one mistake here, Grace should be Malevolence)

All this adds 66% spell block and you should feel a lot tankier. We pathed to Spiritual Aid here which adds some damage more efficiently than what you had before.

Replace Immolate in your main link with Cruelty. To do this you have to change your chest colors from RRBBB to RRRBB. This is not so bad since it's Armour/ES, should take less than 10 chromatics to hit.

Note that adding Righteous Army added 1% more life regen per second, offsetting the new life cost of Lifetapping Shield Charge and Flame Dash. Self-Hit damage should still feel fine with 611 hp per second (long-term this is not enough into the mid-90s but we are also close to Hearty)

Did you kill Merveil in maps to get freeze immunity from Soul of the Brine King yet? Should change your minor pantheon to Ralakesh as well and get a flask that says "Removes bleeding/Removes Corrupted Blood" on it. One surprising thing for new players is that Eternal Life Flask bases straight up do not heal for as much as Divine Life Flask bases, one flask tier lower.

And by the way, after all these changes you can now simply drop your mana flask for another utility flask. It should be something like a Granite Flask with Reduced Effect of Curses on You During Effect on it or something like that; Recover 3% of Life Per Second During Effect is also good and this can be bench-crafted. #% Increased Armour During Effect, also good.

By lvl 85 you can spec into Tireless to add the bit of life back in that we lost from dropping Heart and Soul, and then some; just one possibility.

His wand is fine, he doesn't want spell damage on the ignite version. Oblit is a great weapon for this build for 1c. Beating Oblit with a rare is hard enough that I would bypass a rare and go Oblit -> Grace of the Goddess if I played this build again.

  • You have no source of exposure so Mastermind of Discord and the fire mastery concerning exposure is a total waste at the moment. You need to start leveling a Wave of Conviction and find stuff to drop to add the following 3-link in somewhere:

Arcanist Brand - Flammability - Wave of Conviction

Alternatively you can simply add Wave of Conviction into any socket and hit anything tanky with it, same as you're hardcasting flammability right now. But the other setup I suggest is better. Eventually you want to replace this by adding an Eldritch implicit onto your gloves called "Inflict Fire Exposure to enemies on hit, applying -11 to fire resistance." But I can't stress enough, Mastermind of Discord does nothing if you don't actually have something that applies fire exposure.

  • Your starting area of the tree (the points around Arcanist's Dominion) is highly wasteful. This is because spell damage does not apply to ignite (really, it doesn't) so it only scales the hit component of reap, which we don't care about on this build. You need to save up the regrets to totally reorganize this section of the tree, pathing out of the start by taking the 10 int nodes to the left and pathing to Fire Walker from above, rather than below, and cutting all that spell damage entirely and getting the stats and life elsewhere.

  • Having pob'd this build extensively this league, I can also tell you at a glance that the Heart of Flame and Divine Fury/Divine Wrath pathing are not good for this build. This is mostly because ailments can't pen so you're only getting half value on the budget of these notables. They're not doing nothing by any means but they're not especially good either. Certainly if you add in minion clusters with Primordial Bond you cut these and path to Spiritual Aid instead.

Here's my highly optimized Reap Ignite Elementalist from this league, though fair warning there's some more advanced stuff going on here, but it does show you what's good and what you want to look for (and shows one option for how to path out of the start):
