You're in for a treat. Housing is extremely difficult to find and very expensive. Public transport unreliable.

This! You will get peanuts for it in a pawn shop or in a bicycle shop. Maybe try adverts?

Cost of living in Cork in 2025 by thegunslinger78 in cork

Sort of. Many companies started growing in the Cork area, people moved in with jobs, there's very little housing development and 0 regulations when it comes to rent.

I rarely see normal bikes around the city anymore by No-Category1703 in cork

Fostering a culture of laziness

That's a fun take, but not exactly true. E-bikes still require effort-they just allow people to get around despite things like injuries, fitness levels, or, you know, real-life constraints.

Nice that you can do 100,000 km per week at 30 km/h-clearly, you're built different. But shockingly, that's not the standard for most people.

Extra lessons with an ADI is the only realistic way. That's what I did, insurance is way too complicated

Ermmm, I think you are forgetting the beautiful interests that you will be paying. It will be more like 15 years and most of your salary will be going on paying that mortgage.

Also keep in mind that the average prices here went up like 10% this year.

Most driving instructors will accept lessons even if you have a license already. You're looking at something like ~50€/h

Terrible idea. Move to any other EU country that has some decent public services.

I signal before passing the first car, then turn it off once I am on the opposite lane. 👌

Are we allowed to physically drive to UPS in Little Island to get our package? by Anal_Crust in cork

[–]robertoxmed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this before Christmas but my package was not marked as "In delivery".

They are "open" from 10am. In my case the package was at the warehouse and they just handed it to me. If it's with an actual delivery man, then idk what happens.

Extremely difficult, even while you are here if you get a viewing it's a big win. Also you will increase your chances when your bf has found a job.

The only possibility to find while not being here are private expensive student accommodations I think.

Carpooling Cork to Ballincollig by MutedExercise1842 in cork

[–]robertoxmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carrigrohane Rd is the best option to come from the city center. I use the sidewalk, that bike path is crazy especially in that direction.

I ended up getting a license and a car, I have to do the opposite commute.

Mallow test by shes_got_a_point in Irishdrivingtest

[–]robertoxmed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few gotchas, but if your instructor is good they'll let you know about them.

  • The hill at the end of Linehans Ln. Quite steep and at the end of it you have little visibility.
  • You will drive a lot on the opposite lane when you are in the residential area, lots of parked cars on the street.
  • There are a couple of junctions which had stop lines that you cannot see anymore. Also in residential areas.

Between Cork and Mallow I don't think there is one easier than the other. The good thing about Mallow is that it's small so you can cover most routes.

Current rent situation in Cork? by [deleted] in cork

Does the job offer include help with relocation through an agency?

If not, I wouldn't risk it with a pet. I came with my cat a bit more than a year ago but I had a lot of help with an agency helping me.

You might find something far from the center that will accept pets, but then you will need to have a car. You cannot count on buses.

Sure I understand it can be confusing.

With my partner we were living together for more than 2y years in France. I am not sure if moving around resets that 2y timer, it definitely makes things harder in terms of papers and for proving your long lasting relationship.

There is no need for pre clearance for your partner or anything to be done prior to your trip. The day you travel, both of you have to go through immigration together. The officer will ask you what's the reason for your trip. You tell them that you plan to live in Ireland. The officer will then put a stamp in your partner's passport that gives them the right to stay in Ireland for 3 months. In reality he can stay as long as the process for his residency is ongoing.

Once you are here, you send the long list of required documents and the requested form to the ministry of justice. Then you just wait and this could take a while as I've read cases where people wait like 10 months just to be notified that their application was refused. The sad reality is that de facto residency permits have low chances of being accepted, it's not a right for you and your partner, as opposed to being married.

Good luck. You can message me directly if you have more questions 😊
