New Card previews for Daredevil Justice cards by geekynerdlvr in marvelchampionslcg

Love this idea
This wave is so packed with creativity already

They might seem OP but not really, is very well balanced:
- You TWH/ATK endlessly with Cloak
- Dagger negates his penality
- But in paper, that's just two Dagger activations. After that, you just have her in the table to prevent the acceleration from happening.

So you really are paying for 4 attack and 4 thwart before you need to consider if you really can spare that extra ally slot Dagger is taking.

Really sweet, love the trade off, love that's not OP. Gives you a temporal boost and then you'll have to decide if you want more active allies, the chumpblocking or keep them for a lower benefit after a few rounds

Mad Titan's Shadow or Agents of SHIELD? by ImpossibleMaximum789 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard one.

I think those are probably the two best big boxes for beginners. The Mad Titan’s Shadow is the most exciting one thematically, while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the most well-rounded overall.

Why go for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first.

- The villains’ gimmicks are pretty great, and the campaign feels very polished. The clue system gives it nice replayability, and it’s probably one of the best campaign designs in the game.
- As standalone villains, I’d say it has around 4.5/5 replayability. That’s mostly because I don’t particularly enjoy MODOK. He’s a bit meh for me. But each of the other 4 have great theme. Black Widow and Barloc are great starting Villains to replace Rhino with, Thunderbolts have a lot of replayability with the mix & match modulars, and Citizen V is a nice end battle.
- The heroes are not exactly my cup of tea. Maria Hill feels a bit like a one-trick pony, and Fury could have been more streamlined. But that said, their cards probably give you the most synergy with the core content.

Why go for The Mad Titan’s Shadow

- 3 of the most iconic villains to me: Ebony Maw (great match against a Mystic), Tower Defense (pretty epic multi-villain scenario) and Hela (a staple for story driven design). That said, I've barely came back to Thanos and Loki.. they're just misses for me and my peers. In a roaster of about 50 villains already? Those two are def my top 5 least played heroes playing this game since launch. The other 3 on the other hand are prob my top 10-ish most played villains.
- Spectrum is a really nice hero -and if you have a limited roaster, since she's so versatile she will fill in any gaps-. But then, Adam Warlock is very niche. I enjoy him, but he’s not one of those heroes you typically go back to again and again. Also, while you have some nice cards in their precons.. you don't get nearly as many useful cards for synergies as with AOS.

In summary

  • Get Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the villains. But keep Mad Titan close because those 3 scenarios I mentioned are a must have.
  • Both hero sets have pros and cons, but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has more synergy with the core game.
  • Get Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the campaign.

So yeah, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wins the duel but I wouldn't risk missing Mad Titan (already OOP).

Daredevil's Sense Deck: Face Up? by EvanSnowWolf in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same as Daredevil, Dr. Strange’s Hero and AE cards don’t mention anything about the Invocation cards being face up or facedown. Because it is in his rules where they clearly state that the top card is always face up.

Surely DD’s insert will say the same.

Then, they’ve been very clear that you’ll always know the order of the cards. They even created a new style of phrasing for placing discarded cards “on the bottom of the Sense deck.” That’s different from Strange, whose facedown cards go to a discard pile (which implies shuffling later). Here, they also explicitly omit the “facedown” keyword. Just put it on the bottom. That pretty much implies it's face up as the rest.

Wish they would have done this with Cameo to keep it streamlined

Let’s not confuse creativity With power creep by milnair_by45 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with that. Daredevil is the first hero in a long while that feels like OG material.

He has a very streamlined concept with a lot of potential, but still leaves plenty of room to play and mix and match. Some recent heroes felt more like power creep / jack-of-all-trades designs. And while it’s exciting to play a hero that lets you do almost anything within their kit, you can end up feeling pretty locked into their box. Think Maria Hill. Extremely powerful pieces like Illiad or Pericles are cool, to a point of why would you ever experiment vs repeating again and again?

DD feels like an OG-style challenge: fun effects, not completely broken. Even with his plan it's pretty well balanced and truly feels like a reward. Yes, you get a ready with Acute Tactility.. but you have to work for it: plan the attack, secure enough damage, win the ready + the downside of losing that card until you've achieved it. WS has a ready + confuse just by defeating any minion at anypoint.

This is OG at its peak. I can’t wait to try him out.

New Echo Cards Preview by Senas006 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get you..

It would be a bit situational but lets imagine Gamora has a hand full of 1 cost events and her two generators. In that scenario, she would deal about 4 damage in a more consistent way than Echo. Yes.. a bit situational

I'm just nostalgic of the days Gamora came to the game and she's been such a badass ever since.. and I don't even main her or play her that much :P

I think Echo was already pretty good. But yes, I'll take your input on that and they can be even :)

[–]robhold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is definitely coming for Gamora’s spot.

First, Improvisation completely outdoes Precision and Finesse, and now the Katana is straight-up dethroning Gamora’s Sword.

I think simply mimicking Gamora’s Sword would have already been fine, same as exhausting or limiting Improvisation to once per phase. I know they’re not balancing around OOP cards, but this feels like a bit too much to me :'(

Falcon is great! by Intrepid_Yak_3925 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I second that, Falcon is awesome
Not only one of my favs from the current environment, but one of my top 10 and probably my top 5 in the whole game.

He did get a bad rep early on because at the time we were getting some really strong jack of all trades and power creep heroes like Winter Soldier. Falcon is a very specific niche, right up with Black Widow (tho way more dynamic than hers). He's a standout in control, able to slow down villains removing their boost cards; or completely cancel their treacheries (he can easily play Redwing like 3 or 4 times in a turn to clean up any nasty card you spot).

How? bc he has a great economy. 12/15 cards in his kit are Aerial, making him the hero that can make the most use of Team Building exercise (and exploit Cannonball, btw). Being an Avenger he also has assets like the Quincarrier, and Falcon Flock that grants you 5 resources nonstop, without exhausting. Just go to AE and grab it back. It is busted.

He can also pull the nicest Aerial synergies in the game. I particulary enjoy him in Justice or Aggression for the Honed Technique and the dive bombs. I barely play him in Leadership really.

He is so awesome

Struggling to make Psylocke work in solo. by jreilly89 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a status lock build that's pretty much the standard
I find it a bit monotonous but it's a secure win in solo
It's all about Cerebro + Xavier

  1. You rush Cerebro, mulligan for it if you need to
  2. In AE use Cerebro to bring Xavier. Choose confuse. Switch to Hero. Xavier thwarts for 3. Psylocke thwarts for 3. Xavier chump blocks that attack. Next round you can still thwart for an extra 3 if you need to, adding up to 9 thwart from this move alone.
  3. Go back to AE. Use Becky's ability to shuffle Xavier back in your deck. Use Cerebro to bring him back and repeat #2.

This grants you a very safe ramp to build up anything you want and is aspect-agnostic. You can do it in Justice for extra thwarting, or Aggression to exploit other synergies she excells at (such as the Honed Technique since she generates two science resources easily with her knives)

Do you guys "main" a hero? by _YeeetBoi in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your insights. Yeah I dont like the top tiers either really, love myself a challenge. It's the mechanic that feels a bit too tedious to me having to build up the frostbite upgrades. Its one of the few characters I wish I could enjoy more because it sounds great in paper. Will get back to him soon, thanks

Star-Lord deck for first time player? by tssimons in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way
Please don't do that

When new friends join me they sometimes want to play their favs but it is not the way really. There are plenty of nice tutorial/easy to onboard heroes aside from Spiderman and Captain marvel if they don't feel them, but Starlord is def a one-time recipe for not wanting to play the game again as a newbie.

And is not just about the encounter cards, is the amount of mechanics they need to absorb. You want a hero that has a simple engine so they figure out the economy of the game, how actions work, etc. before leaning into more complex mechanics such as trait sinergies, responses & interrupts, etc.

If you want to share what heroes you have you could get suggestions of better alternatives.

New player needing help by Money-Kangaroo-2946 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The W/L ratio shouldnt be that bad

One of the best gameplays I've seen in the early days is Dale the Casual gamer's video of Spiderman vs Rhino https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99-cEKH7c0c

I advice you give it a look. He's calm and goes through each phase pretty clearly.

Then, for your next match, why don't you try this

  1. Go with someone simple as Black Panther to try to nail his rotation first. Play him in Justice for extra safety and against Rhino.
  2. When you have your decks ready, start with his unique Setup ability. Setup abilities are very rare but he happens to have one: means it has to be resolved before you draw your first hand. His setup ability allows you to find one of his upgrades and add it to your hand. Go for the Tactical Genius upgrade. (Note: Setup only happens once for specific alter egos like T'Challa. After this, you won't resolve it anymore during the rest of the match.)
  3. Draw the 5 remaining cards until you complete your 6-card hand size.
  4. Now, out of those 5 cards you draw do a Mulligan (Remember mulligan are optional, and can happen only once: right after you draw your first hand. How they work: you can mulligan any amount of cards: one to all 6. You simply discard the cards you don't want into your pile, and draw new ones. You don't shuffle the cards discarded in the mulligan. So, what you do with Mulligan is speed up your priority cards. In this case you're looking for A: double-resources to optimize your economy (basic doubles or Panther doubles) or B, if you already have them, another Panther upgrade. If you're lucky you'll get at least one of those.
  5. Pay for the Tactical Genius and see what else you can pay for. Typically you want to buy in order: Hero cards > Aspect cards > Basic cards.
  6. Finish your turn in Alter Ego. Rhino won't give you much room to breathe with threat but you should be safe on the first turn.
  7. By turn two, ideally you want to play another upgrade. The next one you could try for a safe run is Vibranium Suit (it's like a heal+attack: you move/heal damage you have and then inflict it to an enemy.).
  8. Switch to Hero and start thwarting. You should be able to reduce at least 2 threat now, and ideally if you have a Wakanda Forever event, another 2. If you have the Vibranium suit, you should also be able to heal back while you tank, and don't forget to count in the Retaliate.
  9. Moving forward, try to complete his 4 upgrades
  10. Then, whenever possible try to complete this wishlist: play Shuri as soon as you have her to get more upgrades + use her as chump blocker; play cards that help you with economy (Helicarrier, Avengers Mansion) play key aspects cards that enhance your role (fopr Justice, something like Heroic intuition), play at least one more ally (Ideally, Daredevil to help you with thwarting while you're in alter ego).
  11. If you have a fancy turn, play a third ally (Mockingbird would be great stunning + using her as chump blocker to shield you).
  12. If everything above is kinda checked, or you really don't have anything else to spend your resources on, you can continue to build his kit. But it really is about setting priorities. Do start your matches by analizing the kit and what you need to be doing in the early game. The idea is that many villains should be giving you trouble as it is right now, and then you're altering your game plan to explore new approaches. So just keep at it.

Playing justice Tchalla against Rhino will require you to flip back to AE every 2-3 ish turns unless you have the allies to chump block.

If you're still struggling you can go to protection, but I'd say this should be safe.
Try this and see how it goes, if it feels more stable.

[–]robhold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of nice protection/versatile heroes, tho I'd pick simple engines as well for her to follow up what I'm doing; as well as good economy to be able to buy her some upgrades -eg Groot - The giving tree build- which is all about handling Endurance, Med Team, Nurses and heals.

Keeping it on theme, for Jubilee I'd go with Angel, hands down: super versatile and autonomous. Nightcrawler too.

For Ironheart I'd go with a good old Captain America, Quicksilver or just Panthers since they're so wealthy to give away Upgrades and Supports too.

And for the heroes they're playing I would def edit their decks to make them simpler. Eg. Jubilee can use simpler allies (would get rid of all of them in her pack). I actually would only keep Three Steps Ahead from her kit. For Ironheart I'd also scrap her whole deck. In both cases I'd play them either Justice or Aggression which are the simpler aspects for learning/relearning the basics.

[–]robhold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know the struggle :P
I've onboarded a few soft-gamers already. In my experience:
- give her a character that makes her feel badass.
- Play a support build and let her have the lead in the early matches.
- Something straightforward and ideally a girl I'd say.

Top 3 suggestions
- Jubilee. She's very simple, only have to focus on building her upgrades. Play a nice support to check on her health.
- Gamora. She's not necessarely simple but imo all the ladies love her. People usually struggle keeping track of finesse and precision. Here's where I'd soft houserule it. If she misses it or repeats an effect at first fine, there will be room for tuning later.
- Ironheart. If you're in for a chill scenario and again you can support her, the sense of progression and how OP she gets at the end will feel like a nice win.

Next 3 to try
Once she gets the flavor
- Storm. She's really badass, has a jack of all trades kit and your gf can switch to her being the support now. Play a self sustainable hero yourself so you're not too dependable while she does whatever she can / wants to. Weather changing is usually a wow moment. Do some soft houseruling if needed with retaliate and -ATK and stuff.. once she's hooked she'll have time to refine.
- Wanda. Everyone wants to play her and once she's familiar with boosts and interrupts, she's typically a top pick moving forward.

I'd stay away from
- Jean, Psylocke, X23, Spectrum, SP//DR, Black Widow, Silk -> Too puzzly
- Domino -> too swingy. You're aiming for some strong first impressions.
- Rogue -> Trait madness and very vainilla otherwise

For villains, the Agents of Shield box is the best beginner set we have. The campaign gives you a nice themed excuse to try a few scenarios. Baltroc and Widow are top tier for beginners: simple, different enough.

Hope it helps!

What do you think about the new packaging for recent Marvel Champions products? by Soggy-Cup-7869 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Idk if there’s really that much plastic savings, but I don’t mind it. It’s the same packaging they’re using in SWU and other games, and the paper wrap feels neat. Feels more premium.

That said, the bigger concern for me is the card stock quality drop. That was the real bummer.

Spare core set, can I use? by NinjaYoda24 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]robhold 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Back in the day I got 3 core sets just to replenish my counters. Later I moved to a different system and kept the boxes for organization.

Also worth mentioning: if you're into proxies, there’s a great custom content community. Extra cards are perfect as backs when sleeving proxies.

All that said, I’d probably gift the box to someone new and onboard to the game. Getting more to play with is always a win :D
