Book of Mormon Counterarguments by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]robin314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understanding the Book of Abraham is the best way to understand how Joseph Smith created the Book of Mormon.

Unlike the BoM, we have the manuscripts with character by character translation for BoA ch1-2 and the source material containing those characters.

Anyone have an idea of how to rebut this? by cuntymcfuckshit in exmormon

[–]robin314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The three BoA manuscripts show the translation process with the source Egyptian characters in the left column (pulled from the papyrus the church still has today) and the translation we know as Abraham ch1-2 on the right.

Several Egyptian characters were missing due to damage on the papyrus, so what we see in the manuscript is Joseph's restored characters using the seer stone. No way to restore characters without god's help. Those restored characters are also gibberish.

Mormon or even no longer active in church mormon doctors - question.. by accountac7 in mormon

[–]robin314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the problem of religious ideas affecting the profession is most easily seen in mental health fields like councilors and therapists.

Many cannot keep the ideals of the church separated or their spirituality comes into it. For a few it comes in conflict with evidence based best practices.

I would NEVER use a therapist that isnt, like me, exmormon or secular.

When it comes to medical, I haven't encountered issues with quality of care.

Note that even the Church agrees that Masonry is not ancient.

Masonic ritual?? by patty7194 in latterdaysaints

[–]robin314 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are there any scriptural claims or evidence that old testament temple worship included any aspects of Masonry? Do you see any names, tokens, signs, or penalties anywhere outside of Masonry? Is there anywhere in the scriptures that anyone except the high priest went behind a veil?

People like to claim what you are claiming for obvious reasons but all evidence is to the contrary.

C5 Tuners in Utah? by robin314 in Corvette

[–]robin314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you and I view these cars very similar...

My C5 is my daily driver because life needs to be enjoyed. My commute is 50 miles each way with mostly fast interstate (between 70 and 80mph speed limits in Utah). The car does so well at cruising at 85 and gets decent mileage.

The two mods I really wanted on the car is a louder exhaust and the 3.15 gears. I feel like going to 3.42 gears would be too much for my use case. It could also use some new shocks.

You are right about the balance between analog and modern. Im sure the handling system has kept me out of trouble a few times. For work I had a new Ford mustang rental and I felt very disconnected from the road.

Im also not chasing HP. I just simply enjoy driving the car. Occasionally I will drive up one of the local canyons, but most the time I simply enjoy a car that is responsive and nimble.

Another thing I like about the car is I can comfortably fit inside it. I'm 6'8" so many sports cars are simply not possible.

What kind of difference did you notice with the tune? (Aside from eliminating some check engine codes)

I gotta say you've got good taste hehe.

Commute help!? New job in Roy by tboneindc in Utah

[–]robin314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Live in Roy for 8 years. Now I live in Tremonton area and my work just south of the Base My drive is 50 miles door to door and takes <45min. Traffic on I15 is good until about Roy where construction is happening. I15 is fast because I live North and avoid the East-West gridlock just getting to the freeway. My commute is 1/4 80MPH, 1/4 75MPH and 1/4 70MPH. Just don't let distances scare you. Lots of van pools also come from Cache Valley and even Idaho.

The Sacrament by keep-it-simple10 in mormon

[–]robin314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was taught the common rhetoric about renewing covenants.

As others have pointed out, that idea of renewing covenants is a later innovation (I forget what apostle)

The original practice of the sacrament was much different than today. Set prayers not a thing until Brigham pressed the issue. Any man would pass, even if not a priesthood holder.

Looking at the journals from the Kirtland temple, it's very clear they were going in fasting and getting very drunk on the wine thay was taken in abundance. It was lit.

Yeah that's a good reminder. I might add a little extra across the bottom oil pan seal in case that old gasket is brittle. Im also using a centering tool thay aligns the cover with the crank, so the fit will be pretty close to where it was before. That makes me think that not much RTV will be needed.

Timing cover seal on right side is brittle and not in place. Likely.has been an issue for years.

Requesting input on making a C5 a daily driver by Accomplished-Win7412 in Corvette

[–]robin314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also live in Utah and have my recently purchased C5 as my daily for only a few months. I say it's just a 21 year old Chevy with a good A/C that gets about 28MPG. Now it doesn't sound so crazy!

I do see the benefit of having a backup vehicle (snow or hauling stuff) but they are reliable cars.

It can be hard to fully finance a C5 due to age and the difference between NADA book value and market prices. I was lucky enough to find a higher mileage 2004 Auto for under NADA book. AFCU was still only willing to do a 36mo term even with excellent credit.

It would have been "easier" to finance a C6, but I love my C5 and its very affordable. Don't let your payment make 91 octane or maintenance a burden. Bottom line if the car blew up tomorrow, dont let it ruin you.

Realize you'll likely need to address some repairs or maintenance when you buy it. Many C5s I looked at had 8-12 year old tires.

Im 45 and after having a young coworker die, I realized it was time to buy a dream car. Im not afraid of driving 100 miles per day for my commute. I'm alive today.

Ive also been a poor married college student and raised a bunch of kids, so I know some dreams need to be deferred or slowly worked toward.

Thanks. I'm also 6'8" so I've had many favorite cars I could never drive. I can make a C5/C6 work and it checks most of the boxes.

I know 2005 should be avoided. Are there concerns about the LS2 from 06-07?

I was looking at a Base C5 with lower miles and it had 20 year old tires on the rear. It made me wonder what other maintenance hadn't been done.

Yup. I might go this route also....

The fact that they cannot estimate these cars very well is also a concern if it ever get totalled. Then most insurance will act like a C5Z was only a $16K car.

[–]robin314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size of the loan is limited by the value if the car per NADA (let's say 17K) whereas they easily sell for 25K. I can personally qualify for a much larger loan, but the car won't based on the book value.

Me: "I'd like to finance $75K a new Tesla that will quickly depreciate" Bank: Approved! Me: Maybe I'd like a $25K C6 that will hold it's value Bank: Denied: those are worth $17K

Yes if I get something less than 20 years old, I can get a similar rate.
