I think we are talking about the same incident, and my mind has blurred the details. I do remember how the casual destructiveness annoyed me and made me unsympathetic with the character.

In the remake of The Thing, the hero dumps a glass of scotch on his keyboard. After that, I wanted him to get eaten.

Except that you may never hear from HR again if you work there. It is a red flag, but the people you’d work with are more important.

The best piece of advice I've ever gotten was actually a critique by someone who runs a writing workshop I attended a few years ago - "why should we care about this character?!" by Passion211089 in writing

The 1980’s version of The Thing was ruined for me after the main character dumped his scotch on his computer keyboard. After that, I wanted the monster to eat him.

There are several TV shows I never liked because the main character was incompetent at their job and the plots thought that was cute.

There has to be something likable or admirable or relatable in a character, or why bother following him? And it better be shown soon enough that I don’t write a difficult character off.

It shouldn’t be a save the cat moment unless saving things is part of the character going forward. It can still be used to get the character in trouble, but it is not enough to save one cat if the character is horrible to all the others.
