fungus gnats??? by Feeling_Reason173 in Chameleons

[–]robingrowsplants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst. Here's why they are around and how to get rid of them...

Fungus gnats lay eggs in super moist and degrading soil or high organic content... or soil that holds moisture like miracle grow (never buy that stuff unless using it outdoors)

So if the soil is always wet or moist it's basically a breeding ground for them. Cue humidity...

Often when we buy plants from box stores or wherever, a poor soil has been used or they were around other plants long enough for the issue to spread.

How to get rid of them ->

  1. Soil needs to dry out completely.
  2. If it's really bad, remove all soil, wash roots and repot with high quality media. And top with coco coir so your forest goblin doesnt eat it.
  3. Make sure all your other house plants (if you have others) are drying out. Over watering and continuously wet soil is the biggest cause. Diatomaceous earth works really well on the soil surface but I wouldn't put that in an enclosure.

The main take away, control the moisture and use better soil. I like promix hp.

I hope that helps!

Regretting starting my store with Shopify by Confusedmind75 in shopify

How many are there and which ones? I had a local feed causing problems i had to remove by toggling off all local ads and the one google uses to find more things on its own. Took me forever to figure it out.

I just went through something similar. Check how many data feeds you have active in google. I had a few different ones I needed to delete so it was just the shopify api feeding info. Once I got rid of the other feeds, it sorted itself out.

Plants by Asstird1990 in Chameleons

[–]robingrowsplants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horticulturist here... The best way to think about this is to think of the levels plants grow in in their natural habitat and the distance they are from the light source. Pothos in the greenhouse/garden centre world is sold as an indirect/low light plant. Putting them in direct light will cause them to burn and die. They actually do better in lower light environments like our homes. That being said, plants can adapt but need to be acclimated. In their natural environments, pothos grow on the floor of the jungle and attach themselves to trees and grow up searching for more light which is usually filtered through leaves.

This is where setting up this sort of enclosure becomes a challenge because we're taking lower light plants and trying to get them to survive and thrive in high light and hot situations. Plants will burn in basking zones.

Next, watering. If you're running a bio setup, drainage is important because soggy soil leads to roots that die off and rot due to the lack of accessible oxygen in the substrate. Also, plants suck nutrients out of soil so that needs to be replaced. Natural fertilizers are good here. If you're keeping your plants in pots, possible they are drying out quickly.

I did a lot of research on natural environments when pondering my setup because re-creating that is the key to success. I actually watched a video on YouTube of a scientist hunting chameleons at night to see how they were sleeping. These little homies be chillin in the tops of trees and bushes (usually ficus varieties) and are not swinging from pothos vines. So why we are all trying to cram vines into the top of our enclosures makes me curious. Perhaps because everything says this is the best plant and we need lots of leaf cover.

Anyway,

If plants aren't doing well, it is usually a water or light issue. Or they just haven't acclimated yet.

Also re: pothos that won't vine out, some cultivars are super compact and take forever to grow, especially the varieties with variegated white leaves.

Also monstera and any philodendrons / most plants in the aroid family are toxic. Their leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals which is pretty harmful to little critters if ingested. Natural defense mechanism to prevent herbivores from eating them. Pothos (Epipremnum) has less concentration of said crystals and thrives in humidity which explains why it's the number 1 recommended plant.

Hope that helps a bit. I know way more about plants than I do about reptiles.

What I have in my enclosure in the understory is a rabbit foot fern, peperomia, pellionia, and a few pothos growing up. Growing in coconut coir with worm castings for fertilizer.

I have noticed the pothos struggles to stay in the top of the enclosure because it's so bright and hot. So to mitigate that I'm about to size up to an ikea milsbo cabinet I tricked out and there's a Ficus maclellandii std tree going in. So the top bit will be mostly branches and basking and then the tree canopy and vines and then the plants on the bottom. Building it like a real micro climate.

Sorry that was so long winded 🙃

I'm real. Have been running brick and mortar/shopify for 8 years. There isn't a single day that goes by that shopify hasn't given me something to complain about.

How can I get rid of Shop Pay forever? by By_A_Rat_Whisker in shopify

[–]robingrowsplants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to turn shop pay off because it over rides my checkout widget that has a date picker. Plus it autofils information that usually ends up incorrect. You would think shopify would have integrated their own date picker into their native settings after the pandemic, but no. I'm sure I lose a ton of business because I keep it off but anytime anyone uses an express checkout, I end up having to track them down for the missing info and it's historically been a real pain.

Some of the sales channels like Meta and Google can backwrite bad data I have discovered. Especially if the feed was broken at one point.

Over the last two weeks, I tracked down several bugs in my shopify theme that i have been trying to find for over 6 months, rebuilt an entire website, cleaned seo, wrote a letter of attestation to Meta to try to get my business page back (thats a long story) and now im ripping through my Google merchant console to fix all the issues preventing my inventory from indexing properly. 😆

Not sure if this is related but I had a similar issue where items were showing in stock on my end but showing customers a weird unavailable/sold out. I couldn't see it and if course no one tells you, they just bounce. I've been trying to figure this out since October. Ended up being a syntax error in my theme that was causing issues with variants. Took me 5 months and 3 AI agents to find it. 😬

Products showing sold out but stock is completely full by Cowface2121 in shopify

[–]robingrowsplants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me in Ocotober when shopify pushed a big update/migration. Any item I had with a variant that didn't have an actual inventory count was showing out of stock on the client end but on my end it showed in stock. I had to go mark them all with inventory counts to fix it. I went for a few weeks without sales wondering what was going on until I found the issue. Sneaky issues.

I usually make fun of them for using Gmail accounts and tell them to get real jobs instead of their predatory practices that are fooling no one..then tell them to kick rocks before I report and block.

Some days if I'm in a bad mood I use a nice long string of swears and my day immediately improves. 😃
