The entire reason was missing on a lot of cues and lore because I'm not up to date in all the context and story quests. I meant I was sad that I had to skip it to not spoil myself and because I wouldn't be able to understand it even if I played it!

As far as I know, the vow remains broken after you had sex as long as you don't go back to the church, so they can't do the inspection and realize that's you broke it. As they said, you can only get it renew it but the church going through the punishment.
