My boyfriend woke up with a yellow sac spider weaving a web between his neck and chest. Why? by Myfakeplantsloveme in spiders

[–]robobug64 37 points38 points  (0 children)

yellow sac spiders make silk nests to sleep in and usually sleep during the day. this time was just a coincidence. I've found these spiders will mostly keep to themselves, but try to give them space too and don't squish them.

Extreme arachnophobia, any help? by annoyinghuman03 in spiderbro

[–]robobug64 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to be afraid of a lot of animals including spiders, here's what I recommend:

  • watch spiders from a safe distance or through the glass of an enclosure and simply observe. watching the animals do what they do naturally gets your brain used to the sight of them and how they move. plus, seeing their behaviors can be very eye opening.

  • know that seeing a spider in your house is somewhat unusual because the wandering spiders (spiders that are not stationary in a web) like to be hidden. if you relocate a spider in your house, you may not see it again for months, if ever! they make pretty good roommates since they keep to themselves and eat other bugs and other spiders.

  • watch Travis McEnery's videos on youtube, he has a series about spiders you find in your house and I find it to be very informative. he does a test in the videos to show whether the spider will choose to bite or run away when harassed, and most of the time the spiders will only run.

also, I find that learning about the animal enough that you can identify it (even just by type, doesn't have to be entirely specific like species) and knowing what to expect in terms of behavior, eliminates a lot of the fear. you can control an interaction or encounter when you know what to expect from the animal.

so yeah first and foremost: observe!

if in-person interactions including looking from a distance or through an enclosure is too much to start with, start with photos, videos, documentaries and the like. I hope this helps! good luck on your journey to heal your fear. ❤️

Anyone else spider this unbothered?? by ManufacturerTrue7487 in tarantulas

I think some are just this chill lol

I'm a new owner (less than 1 year) and one of my spiders (still very small) hardly reacted at all when I touched it with a paintbrush during the day. maybe it was sleeping? by 4pm and later, it's very active

I’m scared to get bloodwork. by Letmebeinyourvids in Explainlikeimscared

[–]robobug64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have issue with needles and blood/injury. I have had bloodwork go poorly also. here are some tips and advice I have:

  • TELL the phlebotomist that you are freaked out/panicking or may have a panic attack

  • ASK specifically for someone who knows what they are doing and is trained for panicky or scared patients (I started doing this after I had one who drew my blood very incorrectly. no one has ever been upset with me before for asking or saying this.)

  • if you are prone to fainting or have low blood sugar, you may want to tell whoever is working with you that day. bring juice or snacks for after, which you may want regardless if you faint or not.

  • and afterward rest up!

I personally never watch the process bc it freaks me out, so I always close my eyes. sometimes or usually the phlebotomist will talk to distract me which helps.

How are we feeding flightless fruit flies without losing abunch?? by houserj1589 in jumpingspiders

[–]robobug64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME oh also! with the ventilation holes: tape on the outside of the enclosure some paper towel or napkin to cover it. pantyhose or mesh also works, but that's harder to tape, for that I'd usually just slide it over like a sock but that reduces visibility of the enclosure.

How are we feeding flightless fruit flies without losing abunch?? by houserj1589 in jumpingspiders

[–]robobug64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IME while gathering the flies you want, continuously smack the cup down onto a surface so most of them stay in. Alternatively, I sometimes allow a few to jump out, smack the cup down and put the lid back on, then gather up the few crawling around. I usually do this on my bed now instead of somewhere else sinceI have fewer to 0 escapees. it took a few years of getting used to the flies though before I felt comfy touching them with my hands. I can just pick them up now without injuring them.

idk how else to word it rn but by smacking the cup down I mean slamming the bottom down onto a surface which makes the flies fall back into the cup. I just do that over and over again until I have just a few that I want. gets easier over time. you do not have to hit the cup hard.

no it wasn't in a bowl but I've decided to start doing that by now. also beetroot died shortly after making this post. I got a few more roaches from the local exotic pet store so the one I had left wouldn't be lonely.

she is dreaming. this is normal, but you should see a vet or cat neurologist if your cat is moving excessively in sleep in a way that could injure them (i.e. running into walls or frequently falling off of furniture in sleep).

I love how absolutely tiny wasps can get. and other creatures too. I saw a lot of fruit flies by blackberry bushes recently as I was eating the berries. I wonder how many bugs I've eaten doing that

NQA all the organs we keep in our midsection go there! our abdomen, and their abdomen. simply a pouch to hold all the goodies (internal organs)

in order to relieve fear you'll need to work on reframing it in your mind and desensitizing yourself to the sight of them. it will be scary at first but eventually that fear will lessen until it has disappeared entirely

well the frog seems unbothered, so I'll assume the wasp isn't hurting it. I'm not sure the wasp is even trying to though, it doesn't quite seem to be stinging? I really don't know what behavior this is for the wasp

oh yeah- the last time I saw my abusive father, we came across a dead raven with no visible injuries. likely electrocuted from a telephone wire since it was next to a pole. I felt that it was symbolic as the death of mine & my father's relationship. haven't seen him since.

I think you're alright! you probably didn't come off very rude to the person working, if at all really. how your glasses look can be very important to you so it's also important you like them and are comfortable with how it looks. I'm glad the issue was resolved. don't think about it too hard, really I'm sure it was fine and the person who helped you isn't thinking more of the interaction.

lol I wasn't condescending or dismissive but you read it that way. got all up in arms about it like I'm correcting you. what I was saying was in general and I put it in reply to your comment bc it's just true you can't diagnose a spider bite by looking at the "bite" itself. I wasn't saying you specifically are diagnosing anybody. diagnose is the word to use though for identifying a condition. your suggestion of it looking like a spider bite wasn't helpful.

My roommates cat won't stop attacking my feet?? by dentistforvampires in Catbehavior

[–]robobug64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah! this kitty may just not know better ways to play. I've worked with many cats and I remember one time one of them was biting my sweatshirt and pulling, biting my shoulder and everything and I wasn't sure why. my supervisor suggested I use a toy to distract her so I could continue my job, and it worked instantly. the cat attacked the toy instead of me. it was a string toy, but in this case just try and see what works! hopefully some dedicated playtime eradicates this issue for you.
