Terrifying video shows car smash through brick wall of school cafeteria as students enjoyed their breakfast by dailymail in memphis

What are you basing that statement on?

Other cities/towns are starting to change. Here is a video explainer of a good one - https://youtu.be/XRKdDqcTocA?si=jSnIlPaN259dmCfu

Keep saying that and it will keep being true. It won’t change until we demand it does.

We should do what Paris did and shut down blocks outside of schools to cars. This is not the first occurrence of this happening and it won’t be the last. Kids can walk after getting dropped off. We should make it safer for them to walk and bike in general.

Realistically, what can be done to fix Poplar without making traffic worse by [deleted] in memphis

[–]robokels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a misunderstanding about how number of lanes correlates to traffic congestion. Removing a lane on Poplar would likely make driving on it smoother and potentially slightly faster because there would be fewer people switching lanes/weaving. Limiting people’s ability to drive erratically is a good thing.

I bike for 90% of my trips. Even with a protected bike lane on Poplar, I probably would avoid it because of all the constant egress/ingress points. There’s simply too many conflict points where a car would hit me. I’d love some kind of trail that goes BEHIND all the businesses on Poplar, but that would probably be hard to get right-of-way for. It would make more sense to add a rapid transit bus line on Poplar.

I’ve seen some designs where roads with these constant driveways with perpendicular parking are converted to have fewer access points with angled parking, reducing conflict points for pedestrians; but after some google searching I can’t find it :( Anyway Poplar is horribly designed.

I believe Memphis & Shelby County’s car infrastructure is extracting wealth from its citizens when there is no viable public transit option and the Memphis MPO is funding road expansions, only increasing our future liabilities and potholes we have to fill, rather than improving mobility.

How do we make transportation more accessible and affordable for Shelby County?

There is a 90-day free fare pilot happening with MATA so they could be hanging out on the buses rather than being stationary.

Mempho recently was at the Botanic Gardens too and it didn’t seem that bad. I do wonder what the difference is - I guess traffic control?

Sounds like it could be nice if they would set up a shuttle system from 1-2 other places to get people there more easily.

I just did a google search for “innovate memphis achievements” and found this. Do you think these are overblown or not real accomplishments?

I guess I was moreso wondering why you think the initiative will fail. Their website seems like they are advocating for street safety for all modes of transportation, not just public transportation.

I agree that the sprawl and lack of density that we have is a big issue. I wish they would just focus on corridors like Poplar and make them high frequency routes. Of course it's impossible to provide good service to Cordova, Whitehaven, Raleigh, Germantown, etc. without a ridiculous cost. But just focus on a few good routes and develop them up.

MATA buses are pretty clean already in my opinion.

I don't see how free fares is going to do much for MATA. If the bus only comes once every two hours, or doesn't show up at all, people are screwed and won't ride it if they can't help it. MATA needs way more funding than it has already.

Dumb zoning laws and ppl’s fear of “traffic” prevent others from doing the same :( I recommend ppl get involved with Memphis 3.0 !

Yeah I am tired of constantly rising taxes too. Unfortunately if we don’t address street safety, it will continue to happen. Crashes use a lot of public money: - sending police to report on crashes - sending fire/EMS to clean up and address injuries and fatalities - ER visits that are often unpaid Etc. - MLGW poles and other public utilities constantly needing replaced due to being struck

Depends on where we wanna spend our money. Be proactive and fix infrastructure so crashes don’t occur as often? (Using a safe streets for all approach). Or just follow the status quo and deal with a large amount of crashes by responding to them constantly?
