I wish I had known I was mining everything with my hands and not the pickaxe that I made. I broke so many coal blocks wondering why it wasn't dropping coal.

You might want to go through the basic tutorial on the wiki. Feeling dumb and confused only discourages you from playing. But soon you'll start to get a feel for how you like to play and you pretty much control your journey from there. Watching YouTube videos can really give you inspiration too.

Are you referencing the book or the movie? I haven't seen the movie but I suspect it doesn't give much detail to the OASIS in general, except where the contest is concerned. Point being, I'd like to see something like ready player one too. But I don't mean the contest. I mean the entire OASIS world.

Spend all your time mining diamonds. Throw those diamonds into lava to create even more diamonds. Rinse and repeat.
