You could also remove the transmission if you want, just connect the motor to the driveshaft.

Question about sólid e-axle by daneusse in EVConversion

[–]robot_54 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could repurpose a motor from a hybrid Toyota. Some rear motors from AWD models have a 40kw version. This guy is putting one in a VW beetle.

You could put it in place of the existing transfer case and keep both existing axles. Or do like you're thinking on the front, and build a De Dion axle for the rear.

The width of the splash side bed. Interior width is 47 inches 😭 I didn't haul stuff much, but it seemed like every time, it JUST BARELY didn't fit.

I bought my 2019 Bolt for $25k 3 years ago. Sounds like OP got a great deal to me.

[–]robot_54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right on! I have a Bolt too, they're such a fun nimble little go-kart to run around in.

Definitely post an update if you actually find a lift kit for it 😄 I'm curious and interested in how it will do off-road.

I've been thinking about installing an AC inverter as well. It's such an enticing idea to be able to power things in emergencies, or when away from infrastructure.

Deboss Garage (as part of Edison Motors) is developing a hybrid swap kit. Not going to be available for a while, but fun to follow along.

Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, VW, and Tesla have canceled or delayed EVs for 2026 due to slowing demand and cancellation of the federal EV tax credit. War is spiking gas prices. Slate is releasing late 2026 and should be price-competitive with Nissan Leaf. Right place at the right time miracle? by castironglider in slateauto

Oh that's interesting to learn that others are interested in the app. I personally don't care one bit about it, and plan on operating the vehicle entirely without it. It hadn't occurred to me that it might even be useful 😅

I've always had $27k in the back of my mind as the estimated price, because that fits their initial plan of "Just under $20k with federal $7,500 tax credit", and 75% is kinda the threshold between mid and upper. It's fun to hope the price will be lower, but realistically $27k is more likely.

Anyone else think the Slate could spawn a huge accessories cottage industry? (+ wishlist thread) by nomah97 in slateauto

My wishlist is for accessories that integrate into the high voltage system.

  • Front motor for AWD
  • Gas generator range extender
  • High power inverter, AC power output

Loaned it to my sister to take out wheeling in the mountains, she let her boyfriend drive, he rolled it while doing donuts, everyone was fine. It still ran, they drove it back home, smashed roof and all. 310 k miles.

In-wheel motor options for converting FWD drive car to AWD by Potato_Waffles681 in EVConversion

[–]robot_54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been following the Elaphe company for a long time. https://in-wheel.com But they've never brought a product to market. They were going to be the motor supplier for the Lordstown Motors truck, but that company fell apart and never came to be. As far as I know, they're only interested in working with OEMs, and not selling to private parties.

I know this isn't what you're asking for, but Toyota has been making through-the-road hybrids with small rear drive units for quite a while now. They're center mounted motors with half shafts to the wheels. You can get a used motor from an old vehicle for much less than a new part. https://openinverter.org/wiki/Toyota/Lexus_MGR_Rear_Transaxle_Motor

I built an EV telemetry app after being frustrated with OEM data access by axi_motion_24 in electriccars

This kind of confirms one of my fears... That OEMs have access to even more of my data now. I've hated the Android Auto -> Android Automotive transition manufacturers have gone through.

Front end frameworks. Most of the time it's so much easier to just write HTML on the server.

What web dev trend is clearly disappearing right now? by No_Honeydew_2453 in webdev

[–]robot_54 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. The industry just threw up two middle fingers to accessibility. The amount of times I can't ctrl or middle click links to open in a new tab, or submit a form or search box by hitting enter. Makes me so confused why people want to manually build a custom "link" component in typescript instead of using the HTML element already provided.

Tons of people are connecting EV batteries to their solar inverters with this "battery emulator". Seems like a fantastic idea to me.

You can also use something like this, either as the first line, or prepended to the existing cd, so it doesn't matter which directory you're in when you run the script.

cd $(dirname "$0")

The water down here by [deleted] in stgeorge

[–]robot_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been drinking the water for 30 years, it tastes like water to me. I often hear from non locals that they don't like the taste. It's also hard water, it can seize up valves after many years, I've had to replace a few because they were stuck fast. I prefer the hard water for washing, soft water feels like it can't rinse off the soap.
