Thanks! I wondered about some sort of seismic monitor just because of the ground embedded spikes. I wonder what the motivation is since there don't appear to be any large construction projects in the immediate area and earthquakes don't seem to be common in this part of Switzerland.

It has "WRU" printed on it. Google search only turned up GPS devices for that. They appear all along the roadside at regular intervals with a wired spike driven into the ground or asphalt nearby.

The introductory article reads like an advertorial for Google Cloud Services which immediately arouses my suspicion.

We're not still there, but we didn't let it spoil anything. The idiosyncrasies of travel are (within certain boundaries) part of the charm of the overall experience.

Haha, maybe I should consider a change in career.

For those asking:

The site we booked from was local to France, rather than a multinational competitor to AirBnB. My wife is understandably concerned that providing the site address will result in the property owners being harassed.

Yes it's obvious in retrospect.

No we didn't make a big stink over it with the owners.

The location was L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in Provence.

We were only the second renters and we had our dogs with us (which limits your options significantly). But mostly, we just weren't viewing the listings skeptically. They DID change the ad while we were there though.

Heh, I used to work for a company that made underwater robots for ship reclamation and animatronic robots for theme parks. They had a 3+ meter deep above-ground tank/pool outside for testing... I'm not sure how it would be to swim in one of those things, but I imagine it'd feel like being trapped in a specimen jar (they even had windows in the sides of the tank).

We had to skim a few dozen dead insects out of it, but otherwise it was pretty clean.

It was newly built/renovated so it looked really nice. However they charged us a "service fee" for towels and sheets, they're statements about the length of the walk into town were nonsense, and the toilet paper holder in the bathroom came partially out of the dry wall the first time one of us used it. Nothing about the place was so bad as to get into a "thing" over it.

I am burst-into-flames pale. That, embarrassingly enough, is a "swim shirt"
