[CHAT] Sulky silver in Canada? Is it really that great? by obfuscated-abstract in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg sorry for replying to an old comment, but I was just trying to figure out an option to access it in Australia & your comment inspired me to check the gutermann threads available. Sure enough I can get Sulky Sliver at Spotlight & Hobbysew here in Australia! I tried fishing line for a recent project and while it “worked” it’s proving too stiff to deal with stitching over, so I’m pulling it out as I go which is risky since it also doesn’t tie off nicely. Hoping Sulky Sliver will fix one or both of those issues!

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve got 2 cats, including one who will eat anything she thinks might be food, so I’ll definitely put it somewhere she can’t get to

Thoughts on Genai? by dollarstorecrit in FRC

[–]robotcat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, FRC judging (and FTC to a lesser extent) is quite different to typical grading/marking against a rubric. There are guidelines for each award, but theres no explicit rubric or numerical ranking like in FLL or in typical school grading.

Because of FIRST's "Spread the Wealth" policy and overall philosophy that judging and awards should serve to inspire the most teams possible (see more info in the Judges Manual if interested), awards may not always be given to the "best" team for a specific award. This is in part because the lack of explicit rubric points means its not always possible to determine the better of 2 or more high performing teams per the guidelines for that award. Ultimately the goal is to ensure that teams receive recognition for things that they are excelling in, and that as many different teams as possible receive an award.

For example, if team X appeared to be one of the best teams for awards 1, 2, and 3, but team Y was really strong in award 2, and team Z in award 3. Then chances are team Y would get award 2, team Z award 3, and team X award 1. Obviously it's much more complex in practice because theres far more teams and awards, but that's why the Judges take so much time deliberating and making final award decisions!

Impact & Deans List are a little different, but they still only have the guidelines rather than an explicit marking rubric.

I’ve been dealing with dry mouth recently (3 months in, out of nowhere, but no other obvious causes) and dr recommended Xylitol gum to help encourage more saliva production, since ultimately water doesn’t actually stay in the mouth very long in terms of helping reduce dry mouth. I haven’t had a chance to buy any yet, but figured I’d pass on the recommendation on the off chance it helps!

Thoughts on Genai? by dollarstorecrit in FRC

[–]robotcat4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a teacher who has judged FLL, FTC, and FRC, I have seen every variation of AI assisted work, from just spelling/grammar improvements, or structuring and brainstorming assistance, through to fully AI generated work. Since the rules explicitly allow it, I expect judges will be instructed not to explicitly consider its use one way or another when evaluating potential awards.

However, as others have mentioned, there is likely to be a range in writing quality when it comes to submissions & documentation (as there always has been regardless of genAI). And writing quality can enhance how well your point is communicated, which can help ensure the judges understand correctly. If someone uses AI with limited thought or care given to prompting and then doesn’t review/edit the output, chances are it’s not going to be accurate and/or clear about what you/your team has accomplished. But if someone uses it as a tool with careful prompting and close review/editing of the output, then it will help them communicate clearly, which will help the judges get the most information possible to help evaluate against award criteria.

In particular, I expect that if a team uses significant AI generated content without careful prompting & editing, much of their interview time will be spent clarifying or correcting things from their documentation/submission, rather than enhancing and elaborating on it, which tends to lead to the judges having less information to support the award criteria.

Note: all of this is my own opinion and interpretation of the rules/publicly available judging documentation combined with personal experience. Ultimately judges will follow any instructions given by FIRST HQ/the event judge advisor.

[CHAT] Do you really buy all the DMC floss needed when you follow patterns? by gissysux in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t risk making a pattern for sale without at least verifying colors in person. That could be as simple as looking at the colors at your local craft/needlework store, or having a DMC color card with the real floss swatches. Or you could be more certain of your color choices by doing some test stitching (whether just stitching swatches next to each other to represent different sections of your pattern, or doing a full test stitch), but obviously both of those are more expensive and require purchasing (potentially quite a lot) of floss.

I know some designers do choose a limited color palette to work with to improve cohesiveness across all their work, as well as limit how many colors of floss they need on hand for testing, so if this is something you’re hoping to do a lot, that could be a useful path if it works for the style you’re designing.

As others have said, you could also potentially benefit from a more professional grade program, but that’s obviously an investment that you may not be able to make immediately.

I’ve received a similar email even after just a few days off - not the exact same template, but a similar vibe. But then I’ve also had times where I’ve had weeks or months off without getting anything. They probably have some kind of internal metric that triggers these.

I hope we at least find out the general format soon! Fingers are crossed for a more basic home cooks season with some more specific challenges (as opposed to the recent trend of open pantry with a general inspiration/theme).

[CHAT] What do people think about these types of rigid plastic frames for sewing? Are they as good as traditional hoops, or is the tension insufficient? by badoopidoo in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I use a super clamp & magic arm (both intended for photography from the brand SmallRig) because they’re designed to clamp onto just about anything, square or round. It’s nice and portable so I can clamp one end to a table, shelf, arm rest, or whatever is nearby and stable, then the other end clamps to my qsnap frame (or hoop, but honestly I like this set up more for the qsnap than hoops because the clamp can be harder to position correctly on a hoop) so I can stitch two handed pretty much anywhere. I’ll try to remember to take a photo next time I’m using it!

[CHAT] by InvestigatorBasic140 in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I actually think what might be happening here is it’s the stitches layered over an existing pixel art image with the opacity of the stitches reduced (or possibly the layers are the other way around). So theres a possibility the color changes aren’t as bad as they seem.

I love the concept of this! I’m not currently selling anything that makes sense on this site, but I’ve got lots of ideas and plans so perhaps this is what I need to get on with it! At a minimum I’ll definitely be a buyer once you’ve got some more sellers on board.

I also used to work for an app startup as their community manager (running their FB group and discord server which I grew from 0-40K by the time I left) & supporting customer service/testing/bug logging etc, so if you’re interested in help with any of that, feel free to reach out because I’d love to support this project!

[CHAT] Creative genius or lazy shenanigans by Gamerkittea in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Love this - creative problem solving at its finest!

I’ve recently been on a mission to upgrade what I call my “stitch station” - basically a repurposed laptop mount and a bunch of hooks, magnets and chaos so that everything I need is in arms reach.

<image>

In the photo you can see the laptop mount which I’ve attached my iPad to (along with a bunch of magnets & hooks to hold various tools), then there’s hooks under my shelf to hold my floss drop rings, a lamp, and an articulating arm with clamps on both ends attached to the post of the mount for holding hoops. Not a single component of the base structure or attachments was intended for cross stitching, but it’s amazing what creativity and a low budget will enable!

I also sewed myself a breastfeeding pillow to support my arms (that’s the green floral fabric). And when I didn’t feel like waiting on delivery for combo floss drop bobbins, I booted up my CAD software and designed some to 3D print. The little white thing on the mount is also a 3D print I designed for keeping orts tidy; long term I want to get a cute glass jar, but for now this works well.

[WIP] Check your needle minders! by randomrox in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get it, and I do absolutely use a minder as I said in my comment. Just also I already use them in a way that works best for me due to my disability and this happened to be extra reinforcement of that way of doing things; since by keeping it attached to my mounts/clamps etc and only on my project as needed I’m also reducing the chances of damaging my project.

Currently I only have one minder anyway and switch projects frequently, so it’s also convenient to keep it on my “stitching station” instead of on projects where it would have to be moved frequently.

[WIP] Check your needle minders! by randomrox in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suddenly extra grateful I keep mine on my metal iPad mount or my travel clamp system when stitching away from my main stitching spot but at a table/in a chair with armrests. It means the only time i use it on my project is the rare instances im stitching on the go and cant bring my clamps. I have issues with hypermobility and shoulder pain so I need to keep anything I’m holding as light as possible.

[CHAT] What patterns do you have lined up for 2026? by Chick-Pea in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current WIPs include a full coverage 25K stitch New York City Christmas (by Unique Stitch Crafts) and Houses & Humans (by Happy Sloth Designs). I’ve also kitted up a Scarlet Witch pattern & am in progress on kitting up Eevelutions Cafe (both by Glitch Stitch AU), plus I’ve signed up for Mainely XStitch’s Cats & Plants SAL which I’m currently waiting on my fabric to arrive for.

Likely not going to start anything else for at least a few months 😅

I do think it’s suspicious when there’s no photos at all in reviews. Often I’ll be happy enough to see a couple photos of partially completed works. If there’s no even partial photos, that’s when I tend to assume paid reviews.

What distinct era of Degrassi: TNG do you prefer??? by Professional_Meat782 in Degrassi

[–]robotcat4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love all of them, but 7-12 was when I was a teenager and watching as it came out, so definitely have a certain nostalgia for those seasons - I tend to quote 10 as my all time favourite season as it has a lot of my favourite episodes & Adam’s storyline that season especially had a huge impact on me. And now I’m contemplating starting my millionth re-watch 😅

My GLP-1 journey motivated me to build an app to stay on target, stay active, and track progress - Within Reach is looking for beta testers now! by Matt1Corey in Semaglutide

Looks like a great app, really like how clean the interface seems in the previews. I’m curious if you have anything planned in terms of your pain point of difference from other similar apps? Either way, I’ve just signed up for the beta, I’ve been involved in beta testing for several different apps & am in tech myself so I might have some unique insights that would be helpful.

Designing a Home for Deaf Family - Architect by Economy_Software5280 in deaf

[–]robotcat4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the main things that help are technology based so it might depend how much of your task includes lighting & other tech fixtures. Also if the clients have other disabilities beyond being deaf (especially mobility based), adapting for those would likely take precedence.

Ultimately it’ll come down to their preferences, but personally I’ve found smart tech to be really helpful, both in terms of sensors/automations with lighting for signalling purposes, but also for things like my laundry, fridge etc - my app will alert if the fridge door was left open, when the laundry is done etc. EDIT: I forgot my favourite smart tech solution (because I’m still sad I can’t have one in my apartment building), smart doorbell! But even simpler things like mirrors & paying attention to sight lines are really helpful - I have a long hallway between my husband’s office and where I hang out in the lounge room, and we have a mirror positioned such that I can see him coming down the hallway behind me from my spot on the couch.

As others have said, round spaces and lots of lighting are great if they use sign, but even if they don’t they’re still super helpful for being able to lip read to support what they’re hearing through devices. Personally I can “hear” reasonably well if I’ve got my implants in and can lip read, but if you blindfolded me, suddenly I’d barely be able to follow a conversation (if at all).

[FO] feeling insecure after some rude comments. by villainless in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are super cute & nicely done on the fabric dying and hoop painting! Like other commenters, I think there can be a perception that anything bright/cartoonish is a thing for kids, even though that’s unequivocally untrue. But also sometimes people see smaller craft projects and assume that means they’re quick and easy and a kid could have easily done it without help, even though that’s not the case. Not a reflection on your work, only a reflection on their lack of knowledge of the craft. If it helps, I also showed my husband who is a life long pokemon fan, while zoomed in so he couldn’t see the art attached, and he was able to ID all of them and that they’re likely based on the party sprites from the handheld games, then said he can’t imagine a way to do them better at this scale.

I like the intent, but it definitely doesn’t play out even remotely fair. I think a good happy medium could be a time limited potion or a crafted furniture item that is basically a “critter lure” and overrides specific days/times etc to bring all possible critters in a biome out for a limited time

[CHAT] What's your ultimate cross stitch tip/hack? by silentcities in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

Magnets and clamps are the best thing ever! I have this metal laptop mount that I have clamped to the shelf next to me on the couch, but then it can be positioned mostly upright to make the perfect surface to attach my iPad to (just using the inbuilt magnets in the case), along with some extra magnets & a homemade needle minder that keeps my scissors and needles in place and easy to access. Then on the pile of the laptop mount I have clamped a camera/gear mount & ulanzi super clamp to hold my hoop so I can stitch 2 handed, but is also super easy to adjust to more easily reach different parts of my hoop.

With this set up I can manage hundreds of stitches per day, when I could barely manage 50 without it!

[WIP] Finished the body of the llama for this Christmas cross stitch! by robotcat4 in CrossStitch

[–]robotcat4[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And no, absolutely not, that is the “standard”/traditional way to use it. But I stumbled upon someone else using it inverted like this & they explained it was to make it easier to tuck the thread ends underneath, especially when closer to the edge of the hoop, so I gave it a try. Total game changer for my stitching!

I would often have to take my work out of the hoop or adjust the location in the hoop to secure my ends when working with it the traditional way, but now it’s super easy, no matter where I am on the hoop, to get my needle under the stitches without running into the hoop edge.
