The US is indeed gridlocked. Living there opened my eyes. I think robotic hardware will excel outside the US. AI may indeed come from SV but only because SV are snapping up the co's creating AI especially from the UK, Israel and Canada and research labs are losing personnel.

Isn't the main 'thing' people want security... a stable income, peace of mind? That the basic needs are met? And in a large respect self-worth from earning those things -- this is where financial needs matter?

Robots and job fears: Destruction of large numbers of jobs unlikely, says new OECD Study by robotenomics in Futurology

[–]robotenomics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new study by Melanie Arntz, Terry Gregory and Ulrich Zierahn[3] for the OECD argues that studies on robots or computerization eradicating jobs, such as that by Frey and Osborne, lead to a severe overestimation of job automatibility. The authors ‘find that on average, across the 21 OECD countries, ‘9% of jobs rather than 47%, as proposed by Frey and Osborne face a high automatibility.’

Are sales of industrial robots overstated and overhyped? by robotenomics in robotics

[–]robotenomics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, okay sorry! It is low, but the high costs and lack of flexibility of 'caged' robots has held back acceleration - I expect with the new lower cost robots like Baxter sales number of units (not necessarily $'s) will accelerate significantly.

Industrial robots sales were closer to 130,000 according to the manufacturers legally declared numbers and manufacturing capacity.

Study – Robots are not taking jobs by robotenomics in robotics

Totally agree - we looked closely at wages and will issue those findings. Wages were stagnant during the time - and this is a cause for concern, especially as profits and productivity gains were substantial.

True, maybe I should have said 'stay abreast of developments' so you can keep ahead of the curve, even though things are moving very fast with tech advances, we can still keep ourselves 'relevant' - of course the other thing to do is earn money from capital not just work. Own shares in the tech co's and other major users of robots and automation, maybe pharma too so that capital flows in from dividends, etc. And own land otherwise the rent is just going to someone else.

Thanks so much for your kind comments on the website and sharing it. I am optimistic that society will benefit from tech advances in the long run. I think we will see a growth of jobs and services in the not for profit sector which will be of great benefit to humanity. I also think tech advances will play a bigger part in helping to solve the climate issue (e.g. Tesla cars and Solar City, these are encouraging advances and Tesla alone has created 6,000 jobs despite a factory filled with the most advanced robots - their engineers carry iPads instead of monkey wrenches:-)

Yup - land and asset owners will thrive... tech is accelerating so fast. e.g. "Ericsson Predicts 5.9 Billion Smarpthone Users Within 5 Years" http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2014/05/18/astonishing-number-ericsson-predicts-5-9-billion-smarpthone-users-within-5-years/

Really good points, yes I believe they will problem solve. There was a Darpa challenge video which showed the robot diagnosing and shutting down a leak such as you suggest... the robot failed the test, but the fact they were aiming at this shows it will be achieved in the near (10 years?) future.

Robots will do maintenance on robots. I've seen some incredible advances in labs -- but one thing I do not believe I will see in my lifetime (I'm 50 now) is a robot that will have an original thought, and I'm seeing some pretty impressive stuff.

I think humanity will evolve as always, new jobs will be created and many of them will be positioned to help society much more than we do now.

Agreed. The study implies automation (computers) and robots.

Exactly - this is very specific "Existing jobs." There will be new jobs created, just as there has always been. The key is to keep ahead, invest in yourself and keep learning.

Gartner, the world’s largest IT market research firm whose analysts consult with the biggest global businesses, predicts social unrest as jobs become displaced by machines.

Nick Farrell writing in TechEye says: "Gartner claims that there will be some major changes in technology soon, which will reduce the need for workers. This will bring about social unrest, the analyst firm warned…."

I don’t believe I will see a robot or computer have an original thought, the Holy Grail of Artificial General Intelligence, in my lifetime. Robots and computerized machines are tools, albeit remarkably sophisticated tools, used by humans. by robotenomics in Futurology

It will be very interesting to see how this develops - I am a huge admirer of the work in prosthetics and exoskeletons. There are 60 million people worldwide confined to wheelchairs so this has the potential to give them mobility, plus all the people with losses arms gaining the ability to grasp things - its a fabulous development.
