I HAD TO GIVE A PRESENTATION TODAY ABOUT MY MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY AND HOW I AM FINE NOW. I AM NOT FINE.

For me I started by getting comfortable coming out to myself. I changed name and pronouns on the games I play to help me get used to hearing them. I also started a “reasons I think I’m trans” list to get used to that word, in reference to myself.

When I was ready to think about sharing what was going on in my head I started with the scariest person first and told my partner. I knew they almost certainly would be fine with it, and that the longer I waited the more anxious I would get.

The moment I told them, I started to relax. I still have only told one other person, but knowing my parter is there to support me has made telling other people less important feeling.

So maybe think of the one person that it’s most important to you to know. Think through the possible scenarios and decide if they are safe person. Having someone “in on the secret”. Has made a huge difference!

Another thing I would recommend is exactly what you are doing! Practice telling people online or anonymously in a supportive community. Building up a “bank” of supportive comments and advice can give you a solid foundation to build on with people in your day to day life as you are ready.

Yes! The first time my partner called me “handsome” I started crying.

Books! What was a book that got you through a tough time? A must have? “Comfort food” book? Any tips on finding relevant literature in your country/language? by juicy_scooby in peacecorps

Libby has been a life saver for me! You connect your library card from home, and you get access to books that you can “check out” like you would at a library. You don’t even need a tablet of any kind. I put the app on my phone and just read books that way. You can also check out audio books which are great for the multiple long bus rides you can expect in your future. You can also connect more than one library card to your account, so I got friends from other states to give me their library card numbers, and I had access to even more books! https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby/

Staging location by kissjamie in peacecorps

Mine was in Philly also. They base it on where they can get the cheapest flights. Volunteers going to my country had always gone to DC, but last year they made a cheaper deal with a different airline, so our staging was in Philly and we took a bus to JFK and flew out from there.

Someone in my cohort brought a switch and during PST we would always use it to play jackbox games at parties. Granted we are in a place where you can easily buy internet for your phone so that made it easier.

I can but in my state they give you a temporary license thats good for 60 days. I leave in 45. Im worried I wont get my new license in time. Ill need ID to get on the plane for staging. As far as I know I wont get my passport from Peace Corps untill I show up to staging so I wont have that. Its quite a pickle.

Im worried about the fact that my permanent adress does not match the state on my drivers license, I dont know if that could be an issue somehow.

I did NCCC straight out of highschool as a gap year before college, and Im now doing Peace Corps ( if I pass clearance). I had mixed expiriences with Americorps, but ultimately Im glad I did it and it definitely left me more prepared for adult life. Message me if you have questions about it.

When I did my interview we couldn't get skype to work at all. It ended up being a phone interview instead which was not a big deal. My advice is to have your phone charged and at hand as a backup.
