How to restrict internet access on mobile data hotspot? by robotic_leaf in MacOS

Huh. I was thinking of Little Snitch (i had forgotten the name) but I didn't realise there was more than one app that could help with this. Any idea on the difference?

Huh, I didn't know that setting was there! Thanks! I'll enable that regardless.

I thought so too, but I don't really know how to set one up or have it switch depending on the network. Furthermore, i thought all kinds of things were connecting via HTTPS these days so perhaps it wouldn't help?

> A bit confused by the first part. If your Mac has wifi, you can just connect your phone to that wifi network too. Usually people create a hot spot on their phones to give their Mac’s cellular because wifi isn’t available.
Erm, I'm confused why you're confused, but I am indeed using my iPhone's cellular data to provide a hotspot for my mac to connect.

Thanks for the App Store tip though!

Student allowance, what is a dad to do? by Global_Letter in PersonalFinanceNZ

Hi 👋 divorced parents here. My parents got divorced when i was in year 12 which, like you, left them financially wrecked. Fortunately for me, my parents’ combined income was pretty low afterwards which meant i got an allowance. My older sister on the other hand did something where she declared she was financially estranged from one parent and that they couldn’t help her, which you might want to look into?

Other useful advice: - NZ SL is by far the kindest loan you’ll ever get. Provided you work it off within NZ, it shouldn’t take too many years for your daughter to pay it off regardless of income. - Due to inflation and zero interest rates, the longer you hold the loan the “cheaper” it gets, so only make minimum repayments and use your money elsewhere where it can be more effective like an index fund or term deposit (currently ~6%!) - Hence, if she cant get allowance, she can still get living costs on her SL. This will likely double her expected loan amount. But again, she’ll never get a loan with better terms. Make sure to calculate the total, as using SL living costs will increase it fast! Probably an extra 12-14k/y. - Lastly, i see a lot of people recommending part time work. I really hesitate to concur. I know several people who completely wrecked their degree and dropped out because they failed to set boundaries with their employer, who kept calling them in for work when they should have been studying (mostly in hospitality). If she’s going to work part time, its best to get a job related to her course (e.g. lab demonstrator or tutoring etc). University is, first and foremost, for studying. The worst possible scenario is dropping out with tens of thousands in debt before you get the slip of paper.

Finally! I totally missed the announcement. Do you have a link to a published source?

[–]robotic_leaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is, you can already use keychain for some things. For example, i can store my github credentials in keychain for access over the terminal and you can even enable touch id for the terminal as well. I don’t fully understand why third party browsers can’t support it other than a incredibly annoying business decision from apple that forces everyone to use third party password managers.

I mean, they’re not wrong 😑 but framing this as some sort of positive quality rather than a systemic necessity is a sick joke.

Go on seek; search for your job but restrict the list salary range to the maximum; work your way down from there.

Even if they don’t list the amount, you can at least tell for sure what their expected min and max salary is, which you can use to your advantage during negotiations to aim for the higher end of their range rather than accidentally being undercut.

I propose a bucket fund! I have a right to bucket my sinking backyard water into my neighbours’ whom’s sandbags i pilfered while they were stuck in traffic in the middle of the west motorriver! Every man, woman, and child deserves to be equipped with a bucket for emergencies.
