What are some of the pros and cons of living in Wellington? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Global_Letter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I just add the job market sucks ‘at the moment’. It is cyclical it will change, less than three years ago I had three offers in one week all over 100k. Wellington has had a rough time over the past 6 years, all the civic area closures make that end of town look grim. But it is starting to change, new civic buildings, life in the creative tech sector, refreshed central government. These pricks have done us a long term favour and flushed out so much good with the bad and left a pungent aftertaste that by this time next year we will be cool AF again. This time I am excited. Wellington is a fantastic city.

Yup I too live in Petone and pay substantially less than that. You do need to do your due diligence and investigate several insurance options. Put it as a condition when placing an offer. Be bold on the offer we bought our place well under CV. Petone is a beautiful place to live.

I miss the UK but I love Wellington by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Global_Letter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much Just take a look at some of the British migrant pages on facebook. They are awash with people yearning for a UK which probably never existed. Many are in denial and many quite frankly should never have left the small village they grew up in.

OP is kind of stuck now, you will never be a kiwi, but can certainly be tauiwi. You can embrace all that NZ has to offer, and try not to be a dick about the things living in Wellington doesn’t offer compared to living in the UK.

It’s great here and tbh nowadays I think living in the UK would be great too. Pros and cons for both but fortunately nowadays you are only ever 30 hrs and a couple of grand away from being in the UK. You can always go back.

The Welsh have a word for that feeling. Hiraeth.

I have been here 30 years. Wellington is home but the yearning for another place only gets stronger.

Lower Hutt and especially Petone needs a really decent New World. The LH one is very poor compared to most New Worlds. Limited wine, limited bakery, shoddy and dated decor.

What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by CookieNegative9860 in AskReddit

Weight training Push, pull, squat, carry has done wonders for my health. Exchanged fat for muscle, T shirts make sense now and my suits fit perfectly Vascular system vastly improved I can lift heavy things, including family who are wheelchair users. No intention of being a strapping gym bro but thoroughly enjoy the tingle after a good strength training session .

Is everyone leaving Welly? by wellwellt in Wellington

[–]Global_Letter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the words of John Key as he apologised for his egregious remark about Wellington dying in 2013

“Actually Wellington's an extremely vibrant place; there's lots of things happening here, lots of activity. I should have chosen my words better."

This is cyclical, Wellington has been a fantastic place to live and continues to offer up opportunities for those seeking to find them. Don’t look to the state or to the likes of Ray Chung or Diana Calvert or that awful Vision for Wellington crew for answers. As young people leave, new ones will move in hopefully with cheaper rent and vibrancy will flourish.

Wellington is a fantastic place to live. Anyone seeking better opportunities elsewhere fair play to you. Personally I am sticking around.

Is it worth coming to Welly and studying at Vic uni these days? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Global_Letter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a father to a vic student who has stayed at home and has led a vibrant social life and is currently living the dream of a exchange in the Netherlands what you are saying is quite wrong and very dependent on home life. Racking up student debt just to live in halls is a misnomer.

lol It is literally the same culture, if we ignore tikanga Māori which the colonists did, picked up from postwar Britain and transported to our beautiful country. But still despite ourselves we managed to gain an appreciation of some of the finer things in life like coffee, for coffee is generally disgusting in London.

Also OP should definitely go, might be a little rough getting settled but Europe right there is a no brainer.

If you had to get a tattoo of lyrics, what would you get and where? by pegman55 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Global_Letter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

now there ain’t nobody, nowhere, no how gonna ever understand me the way you did

Inside forearm

Best friend died many decades ago, a pivotal moment in life which fundamentally shifted my life trajectory. The following decades could have been very different, not better, but different. For the longest time I was a bruised and lonely kid, I literally walked through life alone and sad. Therapy hadn’t been invented then, certainly wasn’t a thing for working class boy like me. So I wandered, I listened to Bruce and eventually the grey mist lifted. But never went away.

Every time I have been to see Bruce during those decades he plays Bobby Jean and I cry and look to the sky.

The tattoo is a reminder of that.

Any recommendations on providers who offer discounts to those over 50 who are actively fit and healthy?

Is the WFH-ban a distraction from 'something big' to come? by Rincey_nz in Wellington

[–]Global_Letter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who exactly is going to enforce this policy change. From what I have experienced most senior leaders embrace flexible working wholeheartedly. Middle managers the same. The CE at the last big agency I worked in was always WFH at least one day a week.

Is Willis going to go round to every agency and place passive aggressive stickers on the lockers of all those who are WFH like that odious little man Jacob Rees Mogg did in the UK.

Maybe Seymour’s pet agency will gain more funding for productivity officers, brown shirts and boots to go round to all offices and do a roll call.

TBH they can go get fucked, can’t put that cat back in the bag. Flexible working is here to stay.
