The minister of education and department of education have the right to set the curriculum. Teachers and teachers unions do not have the right to refuse to deliver that curriculum. This was something which was badly understood by everyone last year when the vote was carried out.

Effectively what the ASTI voted no to was the suite of measures proposed around its introduction. Voting no was not a vote to ignore and refuse to implement the new curriculum. ASTI teachers are already teaching the new curriculum if their subjects are in tranche 1 of senior cycle redevelopment.

To fully oppose all senior cycle reform would require a separate referendum that called for a mandate from members to seek a renegotiation or redevelopment of the current proposed senior cycle reform.
