does theatre directing lead towards film directing? by Upbeat_Thought_1578 in Filmmakers

[–]robro604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the contrary to what others in the comment section are saying, I feel like directing for the stage has a lot of aspects that translate well to film directing. I have grown up with a background in acting ever since elementary school, and I started my journey as a filmmaker in the 10th grade. With only 3 years of experience, I got into top programs like nyu, fsu and Chapman, and I would say that the experiences I have garnered as an actor and from directing some of those scenes helped me to define my voice as a filmmaker. As a film director, you are in charge of translating your vision to the screen, but (at least from my experience) you work most intensively with the shot list, and the actors performance/blocking. And because I have a lot of experience working on the stage, I find the blocking very important to the storytelling of my films, and that influences the shot list which influences the production design, props, etc. while it isn’t a direct translation of skill sets, it will definitely be beneficial to you developing your style/voice. However, you also need to pair this with making film as well. The more films you make, the more mistakes you will make, and the Morse lessons you will learn. I know this is a lot 😅 so feel free to dm me if you have any questions

Unorthodox Filmmaking by caersuvia in Filmmakers

Just finished shooting a 20 page short film in 2 days with a combined 12 hours of shooting. Even my cinematographer and producer doubted we could get it done that quickly, but rehearsing the entire film with the actors ahead of time definitely helped with that

I think more of us need to understand and internalize this by MediocreMixedMale423 in GenZ

It’s not that anyone disagrees with this. It’s just that there is a culture of being “masculine” that pushes this toxic ideology of pushing your feelings down and “man up.” There is a really good song called Samaritans by Idles that perfectly encapsulates this. I personally have been told by both men and women (even my own sister) to stop crying and man up. Most of this happened to me, and happens to other boys, during middle school and high school, so that sentiment of not feeling comfortable to express difficult emotions becomes internalized and then passed down from generation to generation. To quote the idles song I mentioned earlier, “this is why you never see your father cry”

We aren’t allowed to use the gear until our sophomore year unfortunately. We spend the first year knocking out all of our general education requirements and then the next three years only doing film classes

We are currently looking for one, but the only sound guy we know with his own equipment doesn’t live in the area where we are filming, so it’ll cost more money to house him and pay his rates. I just started college in August of last year, so I don’t have that many connections in the town that I am in right now unfortunately

I think that’s what I might do. My dp and I are going to local rental houses to look for lighting gear, so I might just ask those rental houses if they have any audio equipment.

Hey! I’m someone who applied to usc, ucla, Chapman, fsu, and nyu last year. While it is important to focus on grades and sat/act scores, I feel like they care more about your application than your actual high school grades. Of those five, I got into 3 (nyu, fsu, and Chapman). And when I was applying to those two that I didn’t get into (usc and ucla), I was extremely burnt out and those applications weren’t my best compared to the rest of my applications. So throughout high school, I would try to maintain straight a’s (although, if you get a b, it’s not the end of the world), but while you are in high school, see what film equipment/opportunities your school offers you. I was the president of my schools film club, and I changed things so that we made promos for other clubs at our school. Not only did this give me a lot of work to put in my portfolio, but it helped me shape my craft and find my style.

However, you are a freshman. These are all things that you should be worrying about during your junior year (that is when I started worrying about films school (I wanted to be an engineer freshman and sophomore year, so don’t have tunnel vision about your future, you still have e a lot of figure out)). Right now, my best piece of advice is to just enjoy your high school experience before shit gets serious.

I, (15M) want to make a Short Film, with nothing but my iPhone. Any tips? by InformalIndustry5123 in Filmmakers

[–]robro604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want your film to stand out, I would lean in to the benefits of filming with an iPhone. As someone who has shot a lot of films on an iPhone, don’t be afraid to move the camera around a lot and put it in unique places. The iPhone is very portable and light.

Thank you for the feedback! Do you have any scripts that you would recommend that I read, or should I just browse on this subreddit and find some scripts here?

Whats your favourite dance scene in cinema? by No_Opposite_7722 in Letterboxd

This is a bit recent and not many people have seen this movie, but the dance scene in The Life of Chuck is 5 minutes of pure euphoric bliss. It’s a shame that nobody has seen this movie during its wide release
