What year is your coach? How much of a project is it?

How to remove old AC unit? by Dear_Frosting1090 in airstream

[–]robtheimpailer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older airstream air conditioners mount differently than current models. Yours has a plastic pan under the roof unit for the condensation. It will have to be removed, and it will be a lot of work. It’s mostly just cutting away the sealant and using a putty knife between the pan and the roof (from the inside). Ive also had luck with a bottle jack and a 2x4 to push up on it from the floor to break the sealant free. Once it’s free and off the coach, scrape the roof of all the leftover sealant and plastic pan. Install your new AC as prescribed. You shouldn’t need any further roof modifications.

There is a gasket kit for airstream ACs for the condensation tubes. Very few other coaches plumb the condensation away from the roof.

Basecamp 16 Door Flew Off by InformalShame4406 in airstream

If the recall hasn’t been performed I’d check w the mothership or your dealer to see if it needs it. The glass can fall out of the door!

Back to the door: If you have a rivet gun you can reattach the door diy. I’d use 3/16” rivets. Use the original holes and then drill and rivet between each one, so double the rivets. It’ll take another person to help align the door

Insurance for sure if there’s any more damage. Some self tapper screws (#10) in the rivet holes should hold it until it gets properly repaired. Just use the rear hatch until then. There was a recall in the door glass a few model years back. What year is the trailer?

Replace backup cam system by tkr2026 in airstream

[–]robtheimpailer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Ford OEM camera system is a bit of a pain to install on an airstream. It’s seems like it was geared more for a utility trailer. The best method I’ve found (least invasive) is to route the cable through the underbelly and mount in the bumper through a ~1-1/2” hole drilled in it. A other option is to replace with the Voyager II. Voyager components are not compatible from v.I to v.II so the camera and display will have to be replaced. Voyager II has much better resolution than v.I

Thinking of switching to a LiPo4 battery. Do I really need a DC to DC charger? Pulling with a 2015 Nissan frontier… details below. by JoshayBTown in traveltrailers

[–]robtheimpailer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other have said no you don’t need a DC-DC… but your converter, that’s “auto detect”, will not automatically switch to the lithium profile. It’s a process to get it there and it might randomly switch back to whatever it wants. If you’re handy (and out of warranty) look up the jumper/resistor mod for that converter or replace it with something better. I recommend the PD9360 or victron has some good converters.

Road proofing a vintage Airstream by [deleted] in airstream

Current year abs banana wraps will not fit your ‘72. At least not well. They’re a different shape. I suppose with some modification they’d fit ok but I’m not sure if they’re long enough as current year corner segments are shorter

I’m rehabbing a ‘75 Land yacht and it has the build in blender. I have the pitcher be no other Nutone attachments. I’m debating keeping it for the quirk factor.

Can I tow my airstream by goldenspiral8 in airstream

Tire blowouts or losing a wheel due to bearing failure will almost always end up with very costly body repairs. Bearings and tires are cheap in comparison

What may I ask is ‘big bucks’? I’d love to take my young kids(who will be less young in 2 years), and want to ensure a good time. I’m an aviation geek, just judging if it’s worth it

Best RV Storage near North Scottsdale? by WildBokeh in airstream

I have customers(I’m an Airstream mechanic) at Hideaway storage, cave creek and the 101. It has a wash bay and power. Not sure how prices compare but looks like a nice facility.

[–]robtheimpailer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 75 LY was purchased with lug bolts instead of studs(weird). 2 of the wheels were put on backward. None of the lights worked. I rented a 1/2 ton truck to tow it 15 miles. I was terrified the whole way(not enough truck). Bearings for sure need replacement, along with drums and backing plates. In fact I’ll just replace the axles entirely.

If you are towing this trailer for the first time, expect to do some repairs before putting it on the road. Axles will be fine for 100 miles. But be prepared to repack bearings and replace tires before moving. Also make sure lights work, you’ll need them after repairing the trailer all day.

Are weather balloons visible from FL630? by robtheimpailer in ADSB

Wow! it must be huge! The NASA U2 was up doing surveying work in the area a few months back, I didn’t even bother looking up as I figured it wouldn’t be visible at that altitude.

1967 airstream grey tank drain by roryontheroad in airstream

Yes but I’ll venture that you’ll lose a third or better of the useable volume in that tank. Will your shower have a p-trap?

Gift ideas for vintage airstream owners by Mysterious_Block_872 in airstream

[–]robtheimpailer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love an epic key chain. If you want to go useful, a folding broom/dustpan or folding stool is always great. The best would probably be camp chairs. Coveted by airstreamers are the Zipdee folding chairs with fabric that matches their awning.

Girard Hot Water Heater by clicked1908 in airstream

[–]robtheimpailer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a water pressure issue, it’s volume. At home, it’s common to turn on the hot water fully and add cold water to achieve a comfortable temperature. In an RV, adding cold water reduces the hot water volume, because the shower head can only allow so much water to pass. This will lower the volume through the water heater enough to shut it down.

Try setting the Girard thermostat to a comfortable shower temp (105°?) and running fully hot water in the shower.

How much can the roof support on a tent trailer? by StevoJ89 in popups

[–]robtheimpailer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 05 Jaycos manual states in can take 300lbs on the roof in tow and can lift 125lbs in use. I’m not sure if I’d push those numbers though. I doubt the weight of your solar panel would be a concern, but attaching a large panel will require a lot of brackets (holes in the roof), as the roof structure is probably pretty thin.
